The Queensland Department <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Natural Resources and Mines (Alan Fletcher Research<br />

Stati<strong>on</strong>, Brisbane) is rearing and releasing a range <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> agents in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> lantana infestati<strong>on</strong>s in<br />

Queensland and New South Wales (Australia). Some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se agents might be suitable for<br />

use in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Palau</str<strong>on</strong>g>. The Rock Islands should be m<strong>on</strong>i<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>red for arrival <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> lantana and any plants<br />

destroyed.<br />

• Several examples <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Melia azedarach (Chinaberry, pride-<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>-India, Indian lilac) were seen<br />

reproducing pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>usely in 2002 and several additi<strong>on</strong>al planted examples were found in this<br />

survey. This species should be surveyed and evaluated for possible eradicati<strong>on</strong>, since it has<br />

high potential <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> spread but as yet is <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> limited extent.<br />

• Because it can be a fire hazard, it would be desirable <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> map <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> infestati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Melinis minutiflora (molasses grass) found in Ngaraard State, Babeldaob, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> search for<br />

and map any additi<strong>on</strong>al infestati<strong>on</strong>s. The species should be m<strong>on</strong>i<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>red for spread following<br />

any wildfires in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> infestati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

• There is a patch <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Merremia hederacea (ivy woodrose) <strong>on</strong> Koror (down <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> road from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Yuhi Hotel). While it has probably been <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re for some time it is a fairly aggressive vine,<br />

climbing over trees and o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r vegetati<strong>on</strong>. It would be good <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> eradicate this species <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

forestall any fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r spread.<br />

• An eradicati<strong>on</strong> campaign has been carried out against Mikania micrantha (teb el yas, mile-aminute<br />

weed) for over five years. While populati<strong>on</strong>s have been greatly reduced, substantial<br />

infestati<strong>on</strong>s remain, especially in taro patches, and reoccur elsewhere. The eradicati<strong>on</strong><br />

program for this species should be reevaluated <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> determine if eradicati<strong>on</strong> is, in fact, feasible<br />

and whe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cost exceeds <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> potential benefits. Alternative sources <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> funding and<br />

public-private partnerships should also be explored for c<strong>on</strong>trol or eradicati<strong>on</strong> where it is an<br />

urban or agricultural pest.<br />

• The status <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> biological c<strong>on</strong>trol agents for Mimosa diplotricha (mechiuaiuu, giant<br />

sensitive plant) should be checked and any new <strong>on</strong>es introduced, if appropriate. Every effort<br />

should be made <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> prevent its introducti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> islands where it is not known <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be present<br />

(Kayangel, Peleliu, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rock Islands and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Southwest Islands) and it should be promptly<br />

eradicated <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se islands if found. The feasibility <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> eradicati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> Angaur should be<br />

evaluated.<br />

• Mimosa pudica (sensitive plant) is apparently not present <strong>on</strong> Kayangel, Peleliu, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rock<br />

Islands and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Southwest Islands but it is highly likely <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> spread <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re. Any infestati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

found should be promptly eradicated. It might be desirable <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> produce a warning leaflet or<br />

poster for both Mimosa diplotricha and Mimosa pudica for distributi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> islands that are<br />

presently free <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se pests.<br />

• C<strong>on</strong>tinue <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> evaluate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extent and distributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Murraya paniculata (orange jessamine,<br />

satin-wood, Chinese box). It may be desirable <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> reduce <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> plants over time <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

lessen <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> possibility <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its spread and <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> prevent <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spread <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> citrus psyllid if it should<br />

be introduced.<br />
