Because <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> size and serious nature <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this infestati<strong>on</strong>, a thorough ground survey should be<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ducted <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> determine <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> problem and <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> develop a strategy for c<strong>on</strong>trol and<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> preventi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> spread country-wide. The biological evaluati<strong>on</strong> by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> USFS in 2006<br />

recommended mapping, m<strong>on</strong>i<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ring and an integrated c<strong>on</strong>trol program. The thrips Leothrips<br />

urichi is well stabled in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nekken area and effective in c<strong>on</strong>trolling Clidemia in open areas<br />

but largely ineffective in shady forested habitats. In Hawaii, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pathogen Colle<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>trichum<br />

gleosporoides f. sp. clidemiae has defoliated extensive areas under cool, windy and moist<br />

wea<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s .<br />

• A single Datura metel (jims<strong>on</strong> weed) plant was found <strong>on</strong> Ngerchu (Carp) Island and it is<br />

infrequently seen <strong>on</strong> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r islands. Examples <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this weedy plant should be eliminated when<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are found.<br />

• A recent introducti<strong>on</strong>, Episcia reptans (flame violet), is being planted extensively at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Palau</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pacific Resort. An example was also seen <strong>on</strong> Koror. This attractive plant is likely <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

be cultivated widely as a garden plant. It appears <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> spread aggressively in low-light<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s, posing a threat <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> escape from cultivati<strong>on</strong>. A risk assessment should be<br />

performed <strong>on</strong> this species <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> determine fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r management acti<strong>on</strong>. A decisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

acti<strong>on</strong> is needed so<strong>on</strong>; o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rwise, given its attractive nature, this plant will so<strong>on</strong> be planted all<br />

over <str<strong>on</strong>g>Palau</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

• Falcataria moluccana (ukall ra ngebard, Moluccca albizia) may not be as invasive in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Palau</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

as elsewhere in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pacific. In fact, some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> older trees are now dying and, if <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are not<br />

being replaced, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> species may actually be decreasing in abundance. Never<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>less, given its<br />

invasive nature elsewhere and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> difficulty and expense <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trolling trees <strong>on</strong>ce <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y<br />

become large, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> infestati<strong>on</strong> should be mapped and its reproducti<strong>on</strong> and spread<br />

should be evaluated <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>firm whe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r or not it is a threat. If a small plane is available it<br />

may be possible <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>duct an aerial survey, given <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> distinctive appearance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> crown <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

this species. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meantime, it would be prudent <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> not plant it more widely and <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

eliminate isolated trees where feasible. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Palau</str<strong>on</strong>g> should request technical assistance from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

US Forest Service for evaluati<strong>on</strong>, and if c<strong>on</strong>trol is desired, request technical assistance from<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Park <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> American Samoa through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> PILN. The wood <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se trees is<br />

extremely brittle and, if near homes or o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r habitati<strong>on</strong>, pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essi<strong>on</strong>al arborists are needed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

fell <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se trees.<br />

• Hyptis pectinata (mint weed) has <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> potential <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> become a problem in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Palau</str<strong>on</strong>g>, as it has several<br />

o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r places in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pacific. It is primarily an agricultural pest and a weed <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> disturbed areas.<br />

Only a few specimens were seen <strong>on</strong> Babeldaob in 2002 and it was reported present <strong>on</strong><br />

Angaur (Fosberg et al., 1979) but not seen. A survey should be c<strong>on</strong>ducted <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> determine <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

extent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this species and, if feasible, it should be eradicated before it spreads more widely.<br />

Because it is primarily <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> agricultural c<strong>on</strong>cern, perhaps <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Natural Resources C<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong><br />

Service could provide assistance.<br />

• Eradicati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Imperata cylindrica should be pursued <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> completi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

• The biological c<strong>on</strong>trol agents for Lantana camara (lantana) should be m<strong>on</strong>i<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>red <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> make<br />

sure <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are present. If not, or if new <strong>on</strong>es are available, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y may need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be introduced.<br />
