Making the
right choices
These days, there is no choice other than to be a committed environmentalist.
The evidence that climate change is not only man-made but
advancing at potentially catastrophic speed is overwhelming.
But combating climate change is also about making choices. We have only
a few decades in which to make fundamental changes to the way we live
and work if we are to avert the worst impacts of global warming, but it is
hardly realistic to hope to eliminate every major source of pollution at once.
By the same token, decisions taken now for ethically proper and scientifically
sound reasons can have side-effects that may prove more damaging
than the disease they were designed to cure. This is a dilemma that the
European shipping industry is now discovering to its cost.
As European policymakers have long realised and demonstrated through
their efforts to stimulate the development of the Motorways of the Sea,
shipping is the most environmentally sustainable mode of transport for
cargo and passengers.
Of course, it is not without its problems. Shipping realises it must work to
reduce emissions of sulphur and nitrous oxides. That is why the European
industry welcomed the 2008 global agreement on the sulphur content of
marine fuels.
Yet the proposal to mandate 0.1% sulphur content marine fuel in three
Emission Control Areas – the Baltic, the North Sea and the English Channel
– risks turning a well-meaning solution into a damaging problem for
the shipping industry, and for the environment.
As a new study commissioned by the European Community Shipowners’
Associations shows, the industry has reason to be worried. The study
found that the new sulphur limits on short-sea traffic in the affected areas
will push up costs sharply, driving up freight rates and so driving cargo off
the water and onto the roads, with damaging consequences.
This brings us back to choices. The report calculates that a 10% to 20%
shift in cargo from sea to road could wipe out the positive effect of the
sulphur limits and even make the entire exercise a negative for the environment.
Holding the sulphur limit to 0.5%, on the other hand, would result
in a zero shift of cargo from sea to land, and actually reduce the costs
associated with pollution, congestion and accidents.
At a time when public policy on the environment must focus on the net
effect of any changes we make, this is a choice we cannot afford to get
wrong.
As this debate goes on, meanwhile, the Grimaldi Group continues to invest
in environmentally sustainable transport through new maritime routes and
services.
In this issue, you will find news of Finnlines’ latest expansion via new calls
at Gothenburg, Antwerp and Bilbao as well as moves to beef up Grimaldi’s
short-sea services to Sicily.
The opening of new offices in Dakar is another story showcasing a company
on the move, while our success in winning the UK-Italy Business Award
recognises our contribution to international maritime trade. Responsible
growth is always the right choice.

Grande Senegal
is delivered
The new unit, built by Uljanik, is deployed on the
Group’s service linking North Europe to West Africa
On the 12 th September 2009
the multipurpose ro/ro vessel
“Grande Senegal” was
launched at the Uljanik shipyard of Pula
(Croatia) and was finally delivered to
the Group on the 1 st of January 2010. The
new vessel is the fourth in a series of
seven multipurpose ro-ro sister vessels
ordered by the Group with the Croatian
shipyards.
With a length of 210.92 metres, a width
of 32.26 metres and a gross tonnage of
47,300 tonnes, the “Grande Senegal” has
a service speed of 21 knots. Her ideal
cargo intake is 2,000 cars/vans, 2,000
linear metres of rollling cargo and 800
Teu and she is able to accommodate any
kind of rolling, containerised and project
cargo. Designed to offer the maximum
flexibility in terms of intake capacity and
type of cargo loaded, the “Grande Senegal”
has a sophisticated system of internal
ramps/decks, fixed and hoistable
while the stern quarter ramp allows the
loading of cargo units with a weight of
up to 250 tonnes. Each of her two cranes
on the weather deck is able to lift units
(containers and general cargo) up to
40 tonnes, while the height of the main
decks allows the loading of heavy and
out of gauge rolling equipment such as
trucks, tractors, double-deck buses, big
earthmoving project equipment etc.
The vessel has been deployed on the
“Southern Express Service”, one of the
four regular ro/ro-multipurpose services
linking North Europe to West Africa. This
service calls at the ports of Amsterdam,
Hamburg, Tilbury, Antwerp, Le Havre,
Leixoes, Lisbon, Casablanca, Dakar,
Lomé, Luanda, Lobito and Douala. The
“Grande Senegal” replaces older and
slower tonnage with the aim of offering
the best possible service levels to shippers
whilst also supporting the “Lisbon
Express Service” when cargo volumes
Baltic route
Finnlines poised
to bounce back
After overhauling the fleet, adding new routes and cutting costs,
the Baltic’s leading Ro-Ro operator readies itself for the recovery
After one of the most tumultuous
years in the history of Finnlines,
there are encouraging signs
that, with costs sharply pared back and
revenues on the rise again, the company
will edge back into profitability this year.
That would be an achievement in itself
given the changes that the Baltic’s leading
ro-ro operator has gone through over
these last twelve months and the continuing
shadows looming over the regional
economy.
Yet for Emanuele Grimaldi, managing
director of parent company Grimaldi,
it is only one of several reasons to look
forward with optimism. Finnlines, he declares,
is on the rise in a number of ways.
“What I am most happy with is the change
in mentality at the company,” he says,
citing “a new enthusiasm, an interest
in improving the way we do things, a
more entrepreneurial spirit.” In part,
he attributes this change in attitude to
changes at the top, most notably the
arrival of new chief executive Uwe Bakosch.
But as he also says: “There have
always been exceptional people at
Finnlines, like chief financial officer Seija
Turunen, Christer Backman, the president
of FinnLink, or Tapani Voionmaa,
Vice-President responsible of the Legal
Dept, a very experienced, committed
and hard working captain and lawyer.
Others have understood that times have
changed, that additional effort is required,
and they have responded.”
Change has been a mantra at Finnlines
since March of last year, when Mr
Grimaldi took personal charge of a
sweeping restructuring of the company
designed to halt a precipitous decline in
its performance and ready it for an eventual
market recovery.
As he says now, the economic crisis had
dealt a hammer blow to the company’s
main markets. “Finnish seaborne trade
dropped by more than 20%, and Finland
is where we are based, the country on
which we depend. Trade with the rest
of Scandinavia fell by almost as much,
while the Russian market plunged by
perhaps 40%, at least on the ro-ro side.”
Shrinking demand took a heavy toll on
revenues, which tumbled to Euro 494.4m
last year from Euro 735.7m in 2008. But
as Mr Grimaldi notes, Finnlines’ troubles
were also self-inflicted, most obviously
and most damagingly via an excess of
high-priced and under-utilised chartered
tonnage that played havoc with its
costs once the downturn hit in earnest.
Finnlines’ greatest dilemma last year
was how to rid itself of those chartered
ships as part of a wider restructuring of
the fleet. As Mr Grimaldi says: “It was a
disaster. This was totally excessive tonnage,
especially given the reality of the
market.” It required hard bargaining,
and a significant outlayof funds, but as
the year progressed the lineaments of
the new fleet began to take shape.
Some 13 chartered ships left the
Finnlines fleet in 2009, five of them in
December alone. Another has already
gone this year and three more will follow,
starting with the 32-year old Finnforest
in June, substantially reducing the average
age of the fleet as well as the company’s
costs.
Mr Grimaldi adds that the departures
will leave the company with 15 owned
ropaxes, five working the HansaLink
service, three on FinnLink, three more
on Nordolink and two on the TransRussiaExpress
line. The 3,200-linear metre
Euroferry Sicilia, formerly the Finnhansa,
4 GNE WS

will soon return to Finnlines from the
Mediterranean, where it currently flies
the Grimaldi flag, while Stena Line will
redeliver the Finarrow later this year.
More arrivals are on the way, notably six
ro-ros currently on order from the Jinling
yard in China and due for delivery in
2011 and 2012. The 187-metre long vessels
will have capacity for 3,245 linear
metres of rolling cargo and 1,400 cars,
and a speed of 20 knots.
Mr Grimaldi says that the new vessels
will not only be considerably larger than
those they replace, but that the total cost
of the new arrivals will come in at around
$13,000 a day compared with $17,000-
18,000 a day for those they replace.
They will take the number of ro-ros in
the fleet to ten and the total number of
vessels to 25. “This is the skeleton of the
new Finnlines,” Mr Grimaldi says. “If the
market grows and we need additional
tonnage, we will charter in.”
If reorganising the fleet was a critical
first step in halting the company’s slide,
however, it would take considerably
more to prepare it for the recovery. On
the cost side, a string of non-core assets
have been sold off or are on the block,
from flats, warehouses and car parks, to
port container operations and a cement
port business. Other non-essentials will
follow, including warehouses for container-stuffing
and a rail operation that loads
trains onto ships.
There has also been a concerted attack
on waste. Mr Grimaldi notes with wonder
that procurement was managed almost
on a ship-by-ship basis at the old
Finnlines. No more, however; now procurement
is highly centralised, making
for further savings.
As costs have come down, so the company
has also worked to boost revenues,
by better allocating ships to routes, and
by expanding its network to Poland and
Germany. Last year, Finnlines launched
new motorways of the sea between
Helsinki and Gydnia, and Helsinki and
Travemünde. Rostock was added later
in the year.
The company’s long-neglected passenger
business has also come in for intensive
treatment, and Mr Grimaldi has
nothing but praise for Kaj Takolander
and Kielo Vesikko, who have managed
the turnaround. Revenues from passenger
services ran to Euro 30m last year,
which he describes as “important marginal
revenue at little or no cost.”
This year, expectations are higher, with
passenger numbers on core routes now
running 70% to 100% up on last year,
albeit from a low base, and improved
on-board services generating higher returns.
An advanced new electronic sales
system, now under development, should
further boost sales when it is introduced
next year, while other marketing initiatives
such as a VIP card for frequent customers
are also in the offing.
Mr Grimaldi anticipates wringing out an
additional Euro 100 million in revenues
this year, Euro 30 million from passenger
services, another Euro 30 million from
the company’s bunker surcharge, and
the remainder from a string of new services.
He cites rising traffic from Germany
and Italy to Rostock, Finnlines’ new port
of call, as well as new business between
Finland and Spain.
As we move into 2010, Mr Grimaldi sees
other reasons to be cheerful. For years,
he has touted the potential synergies to
be achieved from knitting together the
company’s various regional shipping
networks. For almost as long, those synergies
have been elusive. Now, however,
he says the theory is beginning to come
good in practice.
Consolidation of marketing and administrative
functions is taking place across
the wider group, as is consolidation of
operations, most notably in Antwerp
where Grimaldi and Finnlines have
come together at Antwerp Euroterminal.
In terms of services, meanwhile, connections
are beginning to emerge between
sister companies in the group.
Mr Grimaldi cites Finnlines’ new container
service from Helsinki to Gothenburg,
from which ACL sails to New York.
Finnlines is not yet ACL’s agent but that
too is likely to come. Finnlines’ new
Gothenburg-Bilbao service is another
example of synergy in action.
In the meantime, life is looking up on the
company’s main routes. After the harshest
winter many can remember and a
punishing labour dispute, Mr Grimaldi
says volumes are recovering fast. Meanwhile,
research institute Etia is forecasting
export growth for Finland of 7-8%
per annum through 2012. For Finnlines,
that is more good news and another signal
that 2010 will be much better than the
previous year.
Baltic route
Finnlines moves to
Antwerp Euroterminal...
New synergies are created between Grimaldi’s services
calling Antwerp and those of the Finnish subsidiary
At the beginning of 2010 Finnlines
started calling at Antwerp Euroterminal
(AET) in Belgium.
The first vessel owned by the Grimaldi
Group’s Finnish subsidiary to dock at
AET was the Finnhawk on 14 January.
Prior to that date, Finnlines ships used
the nearby Westerlund terminal, which
is also located on the western side of the
port.
Controlled by the Grimaldi Group, with
a minority stake held by the stevedoring
company Mexiconatie n.v., AET operates
a hub of approximately one million
square metres of storage space plus a
1,600-metre long quay. In order to enable
AET to handle Finnlines vessels that
have a stern ramp only, an extension has
been added to the northern end of the
terminal.
Finnlines is currently operating in Antwerp
twice a week (on Thursdays and
Fridays) on two different lines: Thursday
on the Kotka-Helsinki-Hull-Immingham-
Antwerp-Amsterdam-Helsinki-Rauma-
Kotka route and Friday on the Bilbao-Antwerp-Helsinki-Kotka-Helsinki-Gothenburg-Bilbao
route.
There are five Finnlines ships deployed
at AET, varying in length from 150 to 190
metres and with GT ranging from 12,251
to 25,732. Two are “Finn” class, with a
cargo capacity of 3,276 linear metres of
rolling cargoes plus 367 TEU; the other
three are “Birka” class and can carry
up to 1,775 linear metres of rolling cargoes
in addition to 525 TEU. They are
ice-class vessels and can transport any
type of cargo: vehicles, containers, rolling
cargoes and exceptional loads.
In the first three months of operation, the
two lines have brought AET a substantial
volume of traffic, which is expected
to increase particularly with the introduction
of bigger ships with larger capacity
for vehicles, and also on account of the
possible interconnections with other
services provided by members of the
Grimaldi fleet.
Moving the Finnlines services to AET
provides the opportunity to extend the
lines to and from the Mediterranean,
West Africa and South America as far as
Russia and Finland, thus involving the
Euromed and deep-sea services of the
Grimaldi Group, broadening the network
of lines and guaranteeing more convenient
transit times for shippers. By way of
example, the Gothenburg port call enables
an interconnection with the North
American services supplied by Atlantic
Container Line (ACL), another shipping
company and Grimaldi Group subsidiary.
Finnlines presently has 16 employees
based at AET. “We are delighted that
our ships are finally calling at AET”,
says Grimaldi Belgium n.v. Luc Hens.
“Thanks to this decision to move Finnlines
to the same terminal where other Grimaldi
Group shipping services are operating,
we will be able to provide direct
links – at lower transhipment costs – between
all the Finnlines destinations in the
Baltic and Northern Europe, and those
served by the Grimaldi Group in North
and South America, West Africa and the
Mediterranean.”
Xxxxxxxxxxx
... and launches three
new ro/ro services
Gothenburg is now linked to Bilbao and
the Finnish ports of Kotka and Helsinki
At the beginning of the year
Finnlines introduced three new
Ro-Ro services which connect
the Finnish ports of Kotka and Helsinki to
Gothenburg (Sweden), and Gothenburg
to the Spanish port of Bilbao.
The vessels deployed on this new regular
service link the ports of Helsinki, Kotka,
Gothenburg and Bilbao on the southbound
route, while they call the port of
Antwerp and Helsinki on the northbound
route. The transit time from Finland to Bilbao
is approximately five days and three
days from Gothenburg to Bilbao.
Thanks to this arrangement, Finnlines
offers additional capacity on the routes
between Bilbao and Antwerp as well as
between Antwerp and Finland, which increases
the capacity for rolling cargo in
the Finnlines network by 20%. Furthermore,
the link with Gothenburg allows
the transhipment of cargo to ACL’s services
which widens even further the Baltic
network to North America. In addition the
call at the port of Antwerp creates a connection
with Grimaldi’s West African and
South American network.
The new Finnlines services are operated
by two modern Ro-Ro ships, the M/V
Finnmill and Finnpulp. With a length of
187 meters and a gross tonnage of 25,732
tonnes, these “ice-class” vessels have a
cargo capacity of 3,276 linear metres of
rolling freight and 367 TEU. They can
load all types of cargo including all
types of vehicles, containers, rolling and
project cargoes.
“This has to be seen as a strategic cargo
orientated innovation in connecting
Finland with Sweden and Spain” said
Uwe Bakosch, Finnlines CEO. “It is also
a logical step forward which allows us
to introduce the new Finnlines owned
Ro‐Ro vessels that are presently under
construction in China and due for delivery
by 2012” concludes Mr. Bakosch.
Grimaldi strengthens
its presence in Sicily
Genoa
Civitavecchia
The Grimaldi Group, as part of its
strategy of further expanding its
presence in the Western Mediterranean,
launched an unprecedented initiative
in view of strengthening its maritime
connections for freight and passengers
between the ports of Catania, Genoa,
Civitavecchia and Malta.
Started the 1 st of February 2010, Grimaldi
provides an additional departure on
the Genoa-Catania route, increasing
the frequency from three to four times
a week in both directions: thanks to this,
the loading capacity on the above route
increased by 30%. Furthermore, departures
from Sicily and from Civitavecchia
have Malta as final destination, aiming at
expanding trade opportunities between
Northern Italy, Sicily and the Maltese archipelago.
“The increase of frequency to 4 weekly
departures on the Catania-Genoa route
proves our willingness to become the
most efficient and strongest economic
tool for the transport of goods between
Sicily and the rest of Europe” said Mr
Guido Grimaldi, Short Sea Lines Commercial
Manager. “This initiative contributes
to enhance Sicily’s mobility and
Catania
Malta
Al Khoms
economic cohesion with the rest of Europe”
concludes Guido Grimaldi.
Moreover, today the port of Catania
is used as a transhipment hub by the
Grimaldi Group for shipments to North
Africa.
The Group at the Fruit Logistica Fair of Berlin
The most important European fresh fruit and
vegetable logistics event, the “Fruit Logistica”
Fair was held in Berlin on 3 rd -5 th February 2010.
It was attended by the Grimaldi Group whose
stand was made up of representatives from
Grimaldi Lines, Finnlines and Minoan Lines.
“Our attendance at Fruit Logistica aimed at presenting
our maritime services and the economic
and logistical benefits that they generate” stated
Guido Grimaldi, the Group’s Short Sea Lines
Commercial Manager. “In recent years, the
Grimaldi Group has become an important tool
in our trade area through which the transport of
fresh fruit and vegetables can develop, grow and
expand over time, ensuring for years to come a
reliable service to satisfy the needs of the market”,
concludes Guido Grimaldi.
approximately 50 employees
The rest of the 6,000-square meter area
purchased in 2009 will most likely be employed
as a centre for offdock services
such as door-to-door container distribution,
workshops and container depots, etc.
Grimaldi Senegal SA acts as a maritime
agency, container forwarder and container
road haulage operator. The company
also manages also a container yard and
a car park in the port of Dakar.
Today almost all Grimaldi’s Atlantic
network routes call at Dakar linking the
routes of North and South America with
West Africa, the three liner services
linking North Europe with West Africa
(Northern, Central, and Southern Express
Services) and finally the service
linking North Europe to South America.
In 2009, the Grimaldi Group reached the
record of 246 calls at Dakar and expects
to reach the same number of calls during
2010.
Over 100
calls at Setubal
Despite the car industry downturn, the Port of Setubal (Portugal)
confirmed that in 2009 over 100 calls were made
by Grimaldi vessels.
The relationship between the Grimaldi Group and the Portuguese
port began in the 1980’s, when the Grimaldi roll on/roll
off services started developing. Today the Group transports
cars, vans and all types of rolling cargo plus containers.
Setubal is approximately 50km south of Lisbon and is a very
important link between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
In fact, nowadays the Group’s ships call at this port with
two regular liner operations, the “EuroAegean” and the “Euro-
Med” services.
The first is a twice-a-week service dedicated to the transport
of new cars, vans and all types of rolling and static cargo on
mafis. Setubal is served southbound from the ports of Southampton,
Flushing, Hamburg, Antwerp and Portbury (Bristol).
After Setubal, vessels call at Valencia, Livorno, Civitavecchia,
Salerno, Palermo, Piraeus, Gemlik, Yenikoy, Alexandria, Beirut,
Tripoli, Tartous, Lattakia, Salerno, Valencia. Eight Pure Car
Truck Carrier Vessels are deployed on this bi-weekly service.
The ro/ro & container service called Euro-Med serves Setubal
northbound from Civitavecchia, Salerno, Piraeus, Izmir,
Ashdod, Limassol, Alexandria, Salerno. Vessels then continue
their voyage to Portbury, Cork, Esbjerg, Wallhamn, Antwerp,
Southampton and back to the Mediterranean.
The Grimaldi Group also regularly calls at the port of Lisbon
with the North Europe/West African and the North Europe/
South American services.
UK-Italy Business
Award to Grimaldi
The Grimaldi Group was one of the
companies recognised at the third
edition of UK-Italy Business Awards,
organized by the British Government
and the government organization ”UK
Trade & Investment” (UKTI). The Group
won the category “Internationalisation
Business Award” for having chosen the
UK as a key destination for its business
development strategy in 2009.
The ceremony was held in Milan on the
20 th of January at the Mezzanotte Palace.
Edward Chaplin, H.M. Ambassador in Italy,
Laurence Bristow-Smith, H.M. Consul
General in Milan and Director General
for Trade and Investments in Italy handed
over the award to Guido Grimaldi, son
of Emanuele Grimaldi and commercial
manager of the short sea shipping Department
in Naples. Also among the winners
was the Fiat Group which was represented
by its CEO Sergio Marchionne,
and Missoni Spa, with Angela Missoni as
the founding family representative.
40 years of activity of ACL Liverpool
Last January was the 40 th anniversary
of Atlantic Container Line’s (ACL)
presence in Liverpool.
ACL began operations in September
1967 as a consortium of Cunard, CGT
French Line, Holland America Line,
Swedish America Line, Wallenius Line
and Transatlantic Steamship Co. The
company became Europe’s first container
line and its first transatlantic service
was operated with its G1 class ships,
calling at various European ports including
the UK ports of Southampton and
Greenock. The first ACL vessel to dock
in Liverpool was the G2 vessel Atlantic
Causeway on her maiden voyage on the
9 th December 1969.
Cunard’s cargo division, ACL’s UK agent,
was headquartered in Liverpool and also
became the headquarters of ACL’s UK
agency. During the next few years Liverpool
was added as a port of call which
was important because of its close proximity
to the UK’s industrial heartland.
Since 1984 Liverpool is called twice
per week by ACL’s current G3 vessels
as their first inbound and last outbound
port. ACL has distinct advantages in the
UK as it offers the most extensive UK
port coverage: Liverpool, Southampton
and Thamesport with a total of 4 sailings
each week between the UK and North
America.
Liverpool has remained ACL’s unique
cornerstone with the fastest transit times
in the trade between the UK and North
America (7 days). It has become the largest
European port on ACL’s service, a reflection
of its location being close to the
major customers in the UK and also the
closest direct transatlantic port to Scotland
and Ireland.
Shortly after the Grimaldi Group took
control of ACL in 2000 it elected to use
ACL’s Liverpool office as its UK centre
for functions such as documentation, accounting,
road transport logistics and
northern UK customer services. ACL uses
Liverpool as its UK agency headquarters
and also deals with the central ship
planning and hazardous cargo control
for Europe and North America. Today
there are 100 employees based in the
Grimaldi-ACL office on the Mersey River.
“The Supplier of the Year award is always
this year have risen above and beyond
the call of duty during one of the most
challenging years in GM history.” said
Bob Socia, vice president of Global Purchasing
and Supply Chain at General Motors
Co.
“This is a truly world-class list of suppliers.
We are proud and delighted to have
received such an important prize for
the ninth time in the last decade” said
Emanuele Grimaldi, co-Managing Director
increase our efforts and to continue offering
top quality logistics services to GM, to
help meet their future goals and expectations”,
environment surrounding this historic
location. Embracing the philosophy of
