Pine Lake Handbook 2012-2013
Pine Lake Staff
Pine Lake Institute and Environmental Campus Director: Dr. Brian Hagenbuch hagenbuchb@hartwick.edu or
431-4518 (office) Brian provides overall leadership for the Pine Lake Institute, Pine Lake Environmental Campus,
campus sustainability initiatives, Hartwick’s Campus Theme, Pine Lake Summer Institute, and Smith Environmental
Field Laboratory. He teaches the first-year seminar on sustainability and coordinates the ES&P minor. He can be
found on-campus in Golisano 120 and tries to escape to Pine Lake a few days a week, where he may or may not be
found. He and his partner Joan enjoy paddling kayaks, bicycling, landscaping, snowshoeing, home renovation,
gardening and cooking. Tahoe, their dog, loves people and is a regular at the Lake. A low-tech guy and avowed
locavore, he makes a mean pot of chili, a great frittata, and has a soft spot for really good desserts!
Manager of Pine Lake Operations: Peter Blue bluep@hartwick.edu or 278-5801 (shop)
Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Pine Lake Environmental Campus and for responding to
emergencies. Peter lives just down the road at 1227 Charlotte Creek. Likes espresso, black tea with lemon, and good
vanilla ice cream. Peter plays nyckelharpa, accordion, percussion (bones, bodhran & hand drums) and calls contra
dancing. He performs at contra dances and concerts individually and in the bands Tunescape, and Escape. He is a
member of the East Meredith Fire Department and captain of their EMS squad. (East Meredith is the fire district that
serves Pine Lake.) Peter is an EMT-Basic; and a Wilderness EMT. He and his wife Debbie met at a dance in the
Vaudevillian soon after the glacier receded and lived at the Lake from 1987-2010. Their three grown children all
grew up at the Lake.
Coordinator of Pine Lake Residency: Erin Toal toale@hartwick.edu or 278-5429 (office) or 431-4547 (on
campus) A product of the trees and the trails, Erin is responsible for the managing all resident concerns, organizing
facilities reservations and providing support to groups and individuals who wish to use the Lake. A former resident
of Pennsylvania, Erin has a degree and over 12 years’ experience in the Outdoor Recreation and Education fields.
Darcy, the smallest resident kitty-cat, and partner Monica share the downstairs Lodge apartment. They enjoy hiking,
gardening, cooking, traveling, being in nature, and the changes that come with each season. Erin will split her time
between Pine Lake and her campus office (Dewar 320) where she works to manage the Challenge Education and
Awakening Programs.
Coordinator of Sustainability Programs: Dan Morse ’97 morsed@hartwick.edu or 431-4666, 124 Golisano
Hall (office) As you might just guess from his job title, Dan coordinates sustainability programs: on-campus programs,
programs at Pine Lake, and programs relating to the campus theme. He works on campus sustainability initiatives,
Pine Lake Institute publications and the PLI website, and generally just about anything sustainability-related that he can
get his hands on. He is proud to be part of the team that has worked to (finally!) finish the Cob House. A Hartwick
grad, Dan lived and worked at Pine Lake as a student and participated in Awakening. His Awakening handle is
“Stringbean,” due presumably to his affinity for all things green. In his free time, he pursues a number of interests,
some of which he might even tell you about if you ask. Dan has a dry sense of humor. Pine Lakers are always welcome
to stop by Dan’s office, 124 Golisano, while they’re on campus.
Student Staff (Resident Assistant (RA))
Max Holden (Hill and Dale 2 cabin) holdenm@hartwick.edu
Max has been studying Buddhism and art for the past four years both at Hartwick and other schools, communities,
and monasteries. His interest include building community, food production/cooking, global politics, reading modern
classics, and studying perception. In his free time he enjoys black and white photography, trips to New York City,
and the sauna. He suggest taking walks around Pine Lake just after it rains.
William Gilbraith (Robertson Lodge Room 1) gilbraithw@hartwick.edu
I usually go by Will or whatever you find easiest to call me. I’m a sophomore Bio-Chemistry major and a member
of the Tennis team. This summer was spent playing tennis, cycling, camping and hiking around Cazenovia NY at an
outdoor camp, and working at a veterinary hospital. Although I have never lived at Pine Lake I am really excited to
be part of the lake community. Some of my favorite things to do are sports and board games late at night, yes; I am
that big of a nerd. Hopefully I will be cycling into campus everyday extending the invite to anyone who is
interested. I am excited to meet everyone at the lake and helping us stay the best part of campus!
