This year is shaping up to be a challenging one, but with significant
progress seen in several of our business segments.
Of particular note is the new route we will be opening between
Uusikaupunki and Lübeck this summer. It’s part of a bespoke logistics
supply chain set up to support the automotive industry. If you’re curious,
you can read more about this huge operation elsewhere in this
magazine.
But this contract is just giving consideration to one kind of the cargos
our fleet of multi-purpose vessels can handle. Forest products is
another. We’ve recently signed a future oriented deal with a major
paper producer who will make use of our superior fleet. This combination
of cargoes suits both industries perfectly and complements both
sectors.
ngs delivered
With the delivery of the last of six ultramodern
roll-on roll-off vessels, the MS
Finnwave – christened only last April at the
Port of Vuosaari – the average age of our
25-strong fleet of owned ships is today under
ten years. Within our trading areas, this
means we have one of the youngest and
most efficient fleets in the business.
To cap off a season of good news, private
passenger numbers have been increasing –
despite a declining market overall. It is especially
gratifying to see a growing number
of regular travellers on our ships. The fact
that passengers find themselves in the very
caring hands of our own on-board personnel,
who know how to turn a voyage into an unforgettable
experience, has no doubt played
a big part in landing repeat customers.
Finnlines is not only a European player; we
are connected to the world via the Grimaldi
Mega Hub in Antwerp, Belgium. Our group
handles cargoes from North America, South
America, West Africa and the Mediterranean.
Efforts to optimise this global network
continue.
Our job is to keep making the transport
services we provide more efficient and more
responsive to our customers’ needs. In doing
so we will help to strengthen Finland’s market
position in the world.
With the help of our customers, our shareholders
and our staff ashore and at sea, I am
convinced that year 2013 will be mastered
accordingly.
Finnwave Christening ceremony
More than 70 guests attended the April 15th
christening and name-giving ceremony for
the MS Finnwave, our latest newbuilding.
Karin Hansen, wife of Stora Enso’s Senior
Vice President Knut Hansen, is the vessel’s
godmother. As is the tradition, Mrs. Hansen
now has the lifelong right to travel on board
the Finnwave without charge.
Following the breaking of a bottle of
champagne over the bow, guests took a
tour of vessel. The festivities continued over
lunch, served on the 13th floor of Finnlines’
new headquarters at the Gate House in Vuosaari.
Guests were treated to a magnificent
view of the state-of-the-art high tech port,
the newly christened ship and other vessels
in the increasingly modern Finnlines fleet.
4
Mr. Aapo Rauhio, Mr. Juha Mahlberg and Mr. Mika Käri, all from Finnlines,
took care of the prestigious gests onboard the MS Finnwave.
Following the traditional breaking of a bottle of champagne over the
bow, the guests were able to take a tour on the weatherdeck, the
commando bridge and other parts of this modern vessel.
From left to right:
The christening party included
New services from Rostock
Direct Service Link Helsinki – Rostock
on intermodality and Pax
Finnlines has launched a new service linking Helsinki and Rostock
after three years of providing indirect services between
the two cities. Frequency has been increased to three sailings
a week in both directions. All departures are integrated into
the railway network, providing both trucks and trailers with excellent
onward links to southeast Europe and beyond. Passengers
travelling from Helsinki to Rostock, Berlin and other destinations
in eastern and central Europe are certain to benefit.
The Hansa-class vessel MS Transeuropa is plying the new
route. She has 32,534 gross tonnes, a length of 180 metres and
can load about 3,200 linear metres of rolling cargo while accommodating
about 114 passengers.
All cabins are 20 sq metres with classic maritime interiors.
Among the facilities available to passengers are a cosy buffet
restaurant, a sauna and a pool.
Direct link
Rostock–Zeebrugge and Bilbao
Separately, Finnlines has further enhanced its network
by launching a new roll-on roll-off weekly service linking
Rostock to Zeebrugge in Belgium and Bilbao in
Spain – a safer, more economical and more environmentally
friendly alternative to the land route.
New long-term contract
with UPM Kymmene
forest products specialist UPM and Finnlines have struck a future oriented
deal covering shipments across the Baltic and North Sea.
The agreement was signed in the beginning
of 2013 and is set to run for many years – an
almost unheard of length of time for transport
contracts.
It’s great news for both companies as it
will give UPM a reliable logistics partner
inspite of fluctuations in the paper products
business. For Finnlines, this cargo will further
ensure the reliability of present and future
key routes. As a direct consequence of the
deal, Finnlines will be inaugurating new services
to and from Spain (Santander, El Ferrol)
and a new line between Finland and Poland
(Rauma–Gdynia). Services within the North
Sea will also be strengthened.
Liner traffic is an attractive way to balance
the seasonal ebb and flow of other markets.
Combining diverse cargo flows creates an
advantage for both the carrier and the shipper
– it’s win-win.
Paper is just one of the cargoes carried
on our multi-purpose vessels. We’re also a
big transporter of cars and car parts – check
out the article on our new contract for a new
Automotive production line.
Our newbuildings are among the few
vessels on the market capable of handling
this diversity of trade. The latest – the MS
Finnwave – has just jointed the fleet.
Finnlines and Automotive – a new logistics partnership
FINNLINES AND DSV ARE JOINING FORCES TO ENSURE THAT THE PRODUCTION OF NEW PAS-
SENGER CARS IS RUNNING FLAWLESSLY AND ON TIME.
It’s a complex logistical operation – just think
how many parts will be required for the tens
of thousands of cars that will come off the
production line every year. The parts need to
be transported to the plant from several locations,
while the finished products need to be
shipped to their happy owners.
Production of the Automotive cars will
start this summer at Uusikaupunki’s Automotive’s
plant in western Finland. A large
number of vehicles will be produced in the
coming years.
This is just-in-time manufacturing at its
sleekest. Over a thousand different items
need to reach the plant in the right order.
By the time production is in full swing, there
will be many trailer-loads moving in and out
every week.
Finnlines is providing sea transportation
for the components as part of a larger logistics
operation under the control of DSV. Our
company’s reliability, flexibility and sheer capacity
were the deciding factors in landing
this contract jointly.
Uusikaupunki will be added to Finnlines’
liner network. There are likely to be departures
twice a week to and from northern Germany.
Frequency will be increased further
when the production lines are at full capacity.
To and From Russia
with Love - on newly
established Social Media
Russia is one of the most exciting tourist markets in the world,
and Finnlines always wants to be as close as possible to its
markets. That’s why we’ve launched a Russian-language version
of our website and beefed up our presence on the country’s
social media, including Facebook and VKontakte.
The St. Petersburg area, which more than 8 million people
call home, has since November 2012 enjoyed direct sea
connections to Germany. To make sure locals know just how
relaxing our TransRussiaExpress service is, we’ve taken on a
Russian-speaker, Mrs. Elisaveta Seppälä, to head our promotional
efforts. She is now working with local tour operators
to spread the good word. Feedback so far has been great.
Frequent travellers have welcomed Finnlines’ commitment to
the market.
Brian Rolfe
made Knight
Finnlines UK managing director Brian Rolfe has been made
Knight, First Class, of the Order of the Lion of Finland. Brian
has worked for the company for 25 years and is also Vice-
Chairman of the Finnish-British Chamber of Commerce.
Brian’s honour was accorded by the President of the Republic
of Finland, H.E. Sauli Niinistö, and
was awarded by the Ambassador of
Finland to the United Kingdom, H.E.
Pekka Huhtaniemi, at his residence
in London on November 26th.
“This award is for Brian’s work in
promoting trade and business opportunities
and relations between Finland
and the UK over a quarter of a
century,” the Ambassador said.
This is a very prestigious award
and a great honour for Finnlines, too.
Food for thought
Have you tried our new Seaday Brunch? Since April, customers
on Finnlines routes between Helsinki and Germany have been
enjoying a fine selection of Nordic and European culinary
delights, often accompanied by a glass of sparkling wine or a
coffee. Brunches begin at 9.30 am and last four hours, which
means there is ample time for a leisurely meal. “As it should be on
a real day on sea!” says Kai Knocke, Head of Hotel Management at
Finnlines Plc in Helsinki.
As part of the rollout of a series of new products,
early-bird breakfasts created by experienced chefs
are now available in the Café Verde on Hansalink
vessels. New snacks – including warm ‘Mr Panini’
sandwiches – are available from the cafeteria or
bars. What’s more, Hansalink and Rostock vessels
now offer two kinds of warm sausage from the
bar – just the right snack, perhaps when combined
with a cold pint, after a long day’s driving. Put your
feet up and enjoy the departure!
New menus are not the only innovation underway
on our modern fleet. Wi-Fi networks have
been installed in public areas on vessels commuting
between Travemünde and Helsinki. During
the test phase, they are free of charge to our
passengers.
Before the summer season, high definition TV
sets will become standard on this line. The channel
selection is being enlarged to include more
sport as well as German, Finnish and Russian
channels.
And don’t forget to check out the onboard
shops on Nordölink vessels between Malmö and
Travemünde – many new products have been introduced
at very competitive prices.
