The Firm: In what are hardly halcyon days for 

international trade practices, the clear effort being 

made by Greenberg Traurig to build up a strong 

trade team is commendable and exciting. A series 

of lateral hires has left the firm well placed to take 

the trade world by storm, and while peers may not 

yet be used to seeing it in bread and butter 

matters, it has laid the foundations of a sophisticated 

21st century trade practice. The firm’s 

superb grounding at the WTO is underscored by 

the leadership of the former chair of its appellate 

body, Jim Bacchus; while most firms are scrambling 

to get a solid footing in this area, Greenberg 

Traurig is moving in the opposite direction – 

looking to develop its already excellent WTO 

expertise into a broader-based and more traditional 

practice with trade remedy strength. This 

process is already well underway: the firm’s 

continued representation of SAGARPA – the 

Mexican government’s Agriculture Department – 

in a wide range of matters including antidumping 

cases proves its credentials in unfair trade matters.

and timeshares. 

The Lawyers: Group cochair Rick Davis in Los 

Angeles can call on more than 30 years’ expertise 

advising on the real estate and finance aspects of the 

industry, with fractional ownership a particular 

specialty. Clients commended his abilities on “large, 

complicated timeshare transactions, especially when 

there are various agencies involved.” He advises the 

owner of the Plaza Hotel in New York on its conversion 

to a mixed-use project involving hotel, full-time 

residences, hotel-condominium units and retail 

uses. Washington, DC’s Nelson Migdal appears on 

hotel and hospitality sales, financings, dispositions 

and operation agreements. A leisure and hospitality 

specialist, he is best known in the market for his 

hotel management agreements and counsel on 

management contracts and licensing. Clients refer 

to this industry stalwart as “our management 

contract guru, academic but in touch with our business.” 

The K Group employed him to assist on the 

negotiation of an exclusive license for the first 

Trump-branded project developed in Central 

America. Michael Sullivan in Orlando regularly 

acts on behalf of marquee client Hilton Hotels. He 

assisted in its $387 million land acquisition, joint 

venture and hotel operating agreements for the 

1,000-room Hilton Hotel and the 500-room 

Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Florida’s Bonnet Creek 

development. Interviewees praised his knowledge of 

hotel operational issues, allied to “a strong understanding 

of management franchising issues” and an 

“intelligent and non-confrontational” style. 

Clients/Work Highlights: The team advises a leading 

timeshare developer on all of its development, 

structuring, documentation and regulatory compliance 

in the USA and internationally, including its 

purchase of a major timeshare and fractional interest 

project in Mexico. It represents casino developer and 

operator Boyd Gaming on its development of the $4 

billion Echelon Place project with multiple hospitality 

brands, replacing the Stardust Resort & Casino on

practitioners handle a degree of retail-related work, 

reflecting the sector’s evolution from sales-related 

trends of old to today’s real estate-led market. Its 

retail industry group adopts a cross-departmental 

approach, working with retailers on their advertising 

and inventory concerns, as well as disputes, environmental, 

IP and tax concerns and some regulatory 

matters. It frequently assists shopping center developers 

and owners on their acquisition of retailers 

and real estate and subsequent development and 

operation. REITs, private investment groups and 

other financial institutions also make use of its 

industry experience. Clients describe a team they 

would go to for larger transactions, due to its “quick

Capital Management, on its acquisition of 655 operating

The Firm: The Arizona employment team of this 

international firm continues to increase its profile both 

within the state and nationally, with clients ranging

Arizona this year, reflecting its increasingly forceful 

presence in the local corporate and securities 

markets. A level of service described as “second to 

none” has kept more than one client “going back year 

after year.” The group represented two companies 

through IPOs, as well as representing other public 

companies in stock transfers and sales, PIPE transactions 

and a novel acquisition of a public company 

through a tender offer. The firm has acted on an 

increased number of private equity deals over the 

past year, representing both buyers and sellers in 

acquisitions. The “professional, accurate and thorough” 

Phoenix-based team of 12 includes eight 

shareholders, and can and does pull in extra 

resources from other regions when required. Recent 

highlights include the $150 million IPO for Kona 

Grill, and major PIPE transactions for Smith & 

Wesson and Syntax-Brillian. 

The Lawyers: Robert Kant has extensive experience 

with IPO and securities work, acquisitions and 

from local entrepreneurs to Fortune 100 companies. 

With three local attorneys who formerly worked for 

the NLRB and cross-fertilization with other local desks 

and national offices, services cover the full range of 

traditional labor law, ERISA litigation and tribal 

employment law. The service offered to clients shows 

the firm is “smart and knows what it is doing.” The 

major coup of the year for the Phoenix team is its 

combined role, alongside the Denver office, as national 

coordinating counsel for a Fortune 100 company for 

more than 100 mass wage and hour and collective 

actions. Other clients vary from start-up companies to 

multinationals, and are drawn from sectors as diverse 

as the public sector, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, 

mining, construction and IT. 

The Lawyers: John Doran is a litigator renowned for 

“going for the kill,” and his involvement with a number 

of high-profile cases that have redefined points of law 

has earned him a reputation among local lawyers for 

PIPE transactions. His 24/7 responsiveness, “sound 

judgment and advice beyond strictly legal questions,” 

and fierce dedication to his clients’ interests are 

popular with clients, several of whom retain his 

ongoing counsel at board level long after initial 

transactions. Brian Blaney is acknowledged by 

opposing counsel as a hard worker and, despite his 

relative youth, is seen as having “added to the quality 

of the firm.” He has been involved in several of the 

firm’s more prominent transactions of late. Bruce 

Macdonough is “as good a securities lawyer as I’ve

offerings entail M&A, bankruptcy, private equity and
