WORLD LIBRARY AND INFORMATION CONGRESS<br />
79 TH IFLA General Assembly And Conference<br />
Singapore hosted the International Federation of Library Associations WLIC” 79 th General Conference<br />
And Assembly, "Future Libraries: Infinite Possibilities", the leading professional event for the<br />
International and information Congress comprised of professional presentations, poster sessions and<br />
Trade Exhibition. It was hosted by IFLA and the National Library Board Singapore and the Library<br />
Association of Singapore and was held from 17-23 August at the SUNTEC Singapore International<br />
Convention and Exhibition Conference Centre.<br />
The conference opened with a dazzaling dragon dance, followed by an Indian-Chinese-Malay dance<br />
drum routine by youths. This was followed by speeches from Mdm Ingrid Parent, IFLA President, Mr<br />
Yaacob Ibrahim Minister of Communications and Information Singapore; Keynote by Mdm Amb Chan<br />
Heng Chee. After speeches the children from the NLB reading programme entertained the audience.<br />
This year there were 3,500 registered delegates from 120 countries. Brunei Darussalam was<br />

IFLA ASEAN CAUCUS INAUGURAL MEETING<br />
For the first time in IFLA WLIC history, a caucus on the ASEAN region was launched with<br />
the theme “Community across Borders” hosted conversations on regional initiatives to<br />
encourage greater use and awareness of the regions rich content and also foster higher<br />
levels of regional unity.<br />
It was held on Saturday 17 Aug 2013, at 4pm and was attended by CONSAL Executive<br />
Board Members and other guests and ASEAN librarians.<br />
Mr Andy Neale, Head of Digital NZ at the National Library of New Zealand made a<br />
presentation. It was followed by a reception where foreign delegates were able to gain new<br />
insights into the region’s library developments and network with ASEAN librarians.<br />

A special publication of 99 stories from librarians ‘ In 99 Words”: Stories That Librarians Tell”<br />
was Launched. It was attended by IFLA Governing Board, President and President elect<br />
and key librarians.<br />
INAUGURATION OF IFLA PRESIDENT<br />
An inaugural reception was held by the Finnish Library Association to honour Ms Sinikka<br />
Sipita the incoming IFLA President. It was held on the evening of 21 Aug 2013 at the<br />
Empress Ballroom, Carlton Hotel. It was generously sponsored by the Finnish Ministry of<br />
Education and Culture and the Embassy of Finland in Singapore.<br />

The other seminar was on How to Prepare your papers for publication: strategies for<br />
getting your interesting results and important best practices published led by Prof Dr<br />
Sabdra Hirsh of San Jose Sate University. Topics covered were What is research?,<br />
how to develop a good research question, choose the right research approach.<br />
On Getting published, covered publication goals, match content with the right journal,<br />
manuscript development, manuscript submission.<br />
TRADE EXHIBITION<br />
The exhibition by library vendors, library schools, product demo and poster sessions<br />
was opened at 4pm on Sunday 18 Aug 2013 at level 4 room 401-403.<br />

It is envisaged that by 2020 almost all inhabitants of the Earth will have the unlimited access to<br />
unfiltered information through personal mobile gadgets. And today the task of librarians are the<br />
maintenance of correct search in huge amounts of information, formation of information culture and<br />
literacy, assistance to socially vulnerable people and persons with a low level of information literacy.<br />
