Piano Works Revisited (2 CDs)
Cat # USW 5
Price Code: O (SRP $13.99)
Double Slimline; Box Lot 30
A two-disc collection of piano works by post-minimalist composer Elodie
Lauten, most of which is available for the first time ever on CD. The albums
Piano Works (1983) and Concerto for Piano and Orchestral Memory (1984),
both reissued in their entirety with remastered sound, incorporate found and
prerecorded sounds into lyrical minimalist piano works in a highly personal,
even baroque, style. Contemporary luminaries Arthur Russell and Peter
Zummo, who were on a similar path, contribute to the Concerto. Also included
in this set is Lauten’s performance of her later masterpiece Variations on the
Orange Cycle (1991), included in Chamber Music America’s Century List of
Important 20 th Century works, as well as other previously unreleased tracks.
“Swells of Stravinsky, the mercurial keyboard majesty of Debussy, the triadbased
romanticism of Arvo Pärt, the clangorous sensuality of Keith Jarrett, the
electronics-meet-acoustics approach of Max Richter, and the beaming melodic
flashes of the Takoma Records cartel.” — Pitchfork
“Minimalist, cinematic music that combines modern, experimental acoustic
sounds with classical qualities.” — NPR, Second Stage
Balmorhea’s previous album was intensely physical, exploring the freedom
and isolation of settlers of an untamed frontier. By contrast, Constellations
shifts focus to the cosmos and beyond, meditating solemnly on the mystical
and metaphysical. The disarming simplicity of the tracks proves that
Balmorhea doesn’t need dense arrangements full of 180-degree turns to craft
deeply affecting compositions.
