BREEDING COMMENCED IN CANADA.<br />

The following schedule will show the gross number of all kinds of fry which<br />

have been turned out of each hatchery in the Dominion since their commencement;<br />

the table will give the year in which each nursery began operations; also the<br />

Province, and the local name by which each hatchery is designated, and the output<br />

of fry from each of them annually. The grand total of young fish as shown in the<br />

table is six hundred and thirtysix millions eight hundred and forty-four thousand nine<br />

Aundred. They were comprised of the best known commercial fishes in the country;<br />

463,709,000 were of the salmonoid family; such as salmon of the sea, salmon-trout of<br />

the great lakes, speckled trout of the streams, and famous whitefish (coregoni); the<br />

balance, or 1'13,135,900, were of the percidie family; such as the lake pickerel, doré<br />

or wall-eyed pike, and small mouth black bass.
