The foregoing table shows the total number of cases canned, names of each cannery<br />

and individual pack since canning operations began in this province. It will<br />

show at a glance the fluctuations in the ran both of the Coast and in the I'raser<br />

River.<br />

Much attention has been given to the Columbia River during the past two years<br />

by American citizens, in order to arrive at some mode of fostering its salmon<br />

fisheries and preserving a valuable industry to the country. I give herewith a table<br />

of the pack on that river for the last twenty-three years :—<br />

Reverting to the remarks made in my last report with reference to the Amen.<br />

cans seeking new fields for this industry, in order to supply the increasing demand<br />

which the partly depleted rivers of Oregon and Washington Territory failed in<br />

doing; I must say that their expectations have been fully realized and that the<br />

prospects are that, the number per cannery will increase.<br />

FISHERY REGULATIONS.<br />

New regulations for salmon and trout fishing have been adopted for thia<br />

province; but so far as their being carried into active operation is concerned, the<br />

matter rests entirely with the Department as to the number of guardians to be em—<br />

ployed for their proper enforcement. The foregoing remarks will show that careful
