DEAR SnI,.—In response to your request for a statement of the exportation of flsb<br />

from this Consulate to the United States during 1888, and their distribution, I re<br />

spectfully enclose the following tables :—<br />

Fish frozen naturally and shipped in bulk during winter is free of duty, being<br />

considered "fresh fish for immediate consumption," but preserved fish, being salted<br />

or packed in boxes with alternate layers of ice, are subject to a duty of 50 cents per<br />

100 lbs. The respective quantities, as above stated, were: Fresh fish or the winter<br />

export 1,312,060 lbs., and preserved fish 652,865 lbs.<br />

The exportation of fish from Port Arthur, within this Consular District, oon<br />

sisting mostly of whitefish, and distributed to Chicago, Detroit arid Buffalo, was dur..<br />

ing 1888 :—.Fresh fish 565,126 lbs., valued at $22,746.60, and preserved fish 56,025<br />

lbs., valued at $2,177.76.
