taken for local consumption. The sedentary seal fishery was good; the retnrn
BONNE ESPERNCI1 SUB-DIVISION.
Mr. Whitely reports that the cod fishery on the whole was a fair voyage. Capelin
struck the shore about 22nd of June, and were taken until about 1st of August.
The general average of boats kept constantly on the fishing grounds was 100 cwt.
each. Dried cod sold readily for $3.60 per cwt. cash, and $4 trade. All the inhabitants
of Bonne Esperance are well provided with supplies for the coming winter. Sal mon
fishing was an average, the run was very rapid, not lasting over two weeks. Salmon
sold for $12 per barrel, taken without barrel, and without inspection. Seal fi4bing
with nets was below the average; the ice kept running along shore until late in Jane,
preventing the setting of nets until the seals had passed. 1[erring were plenty in
July, but as the fishermen were then engaged in the cod fishery, they con 11 not leave
off for the herring; later on the herring had left the shore. On the whole, the season of
1888 has been a prosperous one, and coming after several poor fishing seasons, it haa
inspired us with renewed hope, and next season's operations will be entered upon
eheerfully.
