THE GRAIL 49<br />
A tree of <strong>the</strong> word or of life can be found, as <strong>the</strong>y say, in <strong>the</strong> midd<strong>le</strong> of<br />
Paradise, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hel<strong>le</strong>nes already knew this. The peop<strong>le</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Hesperides<br />
guarded its golden app<strong>le</strong>s.<br />
A boat with a sun on <strong>the</strong> sail.<br />
A fish, symbol of divine luminosity.<br />
A dove, <strong>the</strong> emb<strong>le</strong>m of God <strong>the</strong> Spirit.<br />
Monograms of Christ, in Greek or Latin characters.<br />
The word "Gethsemane": <strong>the</strong> garden where Christ was h<strong>and</strong>ed over to <strong>the</strong><br />
authorities.<br />
The initials "GTS," artistically entwined, probably an abbreviation of <strong>the</strong><br />
word "Gethsemane."<br />
Fragments of a phrase, of which only "Sant G<strong>le</strong>ysa" can be read.<br />
Two of <strong>the</strong>se grottoes have kept <strong>the</strong>ir names: <strong>the</strong> Grotto of Jesus Christ <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Grotto of <strong>the</strong> Dead Man. Before <strong>the</strong> entrance to <strong>the</strong> first one, traces of a small<br />
garden <strong>and</strong> a small terrace remain where <strong>the</strong> hermit who lived <strong>the</strong>re must have<br />
meditated:<br />
Alas wicked world, why do you do so? You give us more pain,<br />
<strong>and</strong> bitter sorrow, Than ever joy!<br />
WOLFRAM VON ESCHENBACH 9<br />
The Cathars did not feel that Earth was <strong>the</strong>ir homel<strong>and</strong>. They compared it to a<br />
prison that an architect, lacking experience, had constructed from low-quality<br />
materials. They were conscious of <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong>ir real home could only be<br />
somewhere beyond <strong>the</strong> stars. "Up <strong>the</strong>re" had been built by <strong>the</strong> Spirit, Amor:<br />
nei<strong>the</strong>r hatred nor war, but life; nei<strong>the</strong>r sickness nor death, ra<strong>the</strong>r—God. In <strong>the</strong><br />
beginning was <strong>the</strong> Spirit. In it was <strong>the</strong> Word, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y were God.<br />
Just as within us two worlds may fight each o<strong>the</strong>r—<strong>the</strong> spirit, which is fat, <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> f<strong>le</strong>sh, which is thin—<strong>the</strong>re are two princip<strong>le</strong>s of action in <strong>the</strong> universe: <strong>the</strong> Yes<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> No, <strong>the</strong> Good <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bad. The Good is God; <strong>the</strong> Bad is Lucifer—<strong>the</strong><br />
eternally negative spirit.<br />
The Word created a world that extends beyond <strong>the</strong> arch of golden clouds, past<br />
<strong>the</strong> stars. Our world is <strong>the</strong> work of Lucifer. The Word is creative; Lucifer is only a<br />
plagiarist, an unta<strong>le</strong>nted mode<strong>le</strong>r.
