Raimon Jordan, Viscount of Saint-Antoine in <strong>the</strong> parish of Cahors, loved a<br />

nob<strong>le</strong> woman who was married to <strong>the</strong> lord of <strong>the</strong> Pena in <strong>the</strong> region of Albi.<br />

Beautiful <strong>and</strong> accomplished, she enjoyed great esteem <strong>and</strong> distinction. He was<br />

cultivated, generous, gallant, well versed with arms, e<strong>le</strong>gant, agreeab<strong>le</strong>, <strong>and</strong> a good<br />

poet. The love that <strong>the</strong>y professed was immense. But as it happened, <strong>the</strong> Viscount<br />

disappeared from his life, replaced by groans, wails, <strong>and</strong> affliction. He gave up his<br />

horse <strong>and</strong> lived in isolation for a year. All <strong>the</strong> charitab<strong>le</strong> souls of <strong>the</strong> region were<br />

very saddened by it, so much so that Alix de Montfort, a young, amiab<strong>le</strong>, <strong>and</strong><br />

good-looking lady, told him to be happy, because in compensation for <strong>the</strong> loss he<br />

suffered, she offered him her person <strong>and</strong> her love. This was <strong>the</strong> genteel message<br />

that she sent: "I ask <strong>and</strong> implore you to come <strong>and</strong> see me."<br />

When <strong>the</strong> Viscount received this honor, an immeasurab<strong>le</strong> sweetness began to<br />

flood his heart. He started to feel happier, <strong>and</strong> he began again to walk among<br />

peop<strong>le</strong>, dress properly, <strong>and</strong> engage his retinue. He decked
