118 PART THREE<br />
burghers imitated <strong>the</strong> customs of <strong>the</strong> nobility <strong>and</strong> competed with <strong>the</strong>m in bravura<br />
<strong>and</strong> palatial spirit; like <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>y dabb<strong>le</strong>d in poetry, <strong>and</strong> if <strong>the</strong>y wished to, <strong>the</strong>y<br />
could easily become "knights." Jealous of <strong>the</strong>ir independence, <strong>the</strong>y rejected <strong>the</strong><br />
influence of <strong>the</strong> c<strong>le</strong>rgy <strong>and</strong> temporal authorities, although <strong>the</strong>y shared <strong>the</strong> latter's<br />
antipathy for <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>and</strong> its c<strong>le</strong>rics.<br />
On one occasion, <strong>the</strong> Bishop of Albi was cal<strong>le</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> deathbed of a dying<br />
relative. He asked him in which monastery he wished to be buried. "Don't worry. I<br />
want to die toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> 'bonshommes' <strong>and</strong> to be buried by <strong>the</strong>m." The Bishop<br />
declared that he would not allow it. "The more you try to hinder me," declared <strong>the</strong><br />
dying man, "I will drag myself on all fours to <strong>the</strong>m." And so it was: The<br />
bonshommes took care of, conso<strong>le</strong>d, <strong>and</strong> buried <strong>the</strong> relative of <strong>the</strong> Bishop of Albi.<br />
Without any doubt, <strong>the</strong> rampant corruption in <strong>the</strong> Church was primarily<br />
responsib<strong>le</strong> for <strong>the</strong> anti-Rome movement in Occitania. Many bishops visited <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
diocese only to col<strong>le</strong>ct arbitrary taxes, <strong>and</strong> for this purpose <strong>the</strong>y retained entire<br />
armies of tax col<strong>le</strong>ctor-robbers. The disorder that reigned among <strong>the</strong> c<strong>le</strong>rgy was<br />
indescribab<strong>le</strong>. They fought <strong>and</strong> excommunicated one ano<strong>the</strong>r. To avoid<br />
recognition, priests hid <strong>the</strong>ir tonsures <strong>and</strong> wore lay clothing. If <strong>the</strong>y managed to<br />
escape <strong>the</strong> glares <strong>and</strong> taunts of <strong>the</strong> peop<strong>le</strong> in <strong>the</strong> street, <strong>the</strong>y could not si<strong>le</strong>nce <strong>the</strong><br />
revi<strong>le</strong>ment of <strong>the</strong> troubadours:<br />
Soon <strong>the</strong> day will come When <strong>the</strong> world will be comp<strong>le</strong>tely<br />
reversed. The priest will go to <strong>the</strong> tournament And <strong>the</strong> women will<br />
preach.<br />
PEIRE CARDINAL 6<br />
When a heretic preached, peop<strong>le</strong> came in throngs <strong>and</strong> listened enthusiastically.<br />
If by chance a Catholic priest spoke, <strong>the</strong> crowd would ask him ironically how he<br />
could dare to preach <strong>the</strong> Word of God.<br />
The Church recognized that <strong>the</strong> heresy's progress was stimulated by <strong>the</strong><br />
c<strong>le</strong>rgy's depravity <strong>and</strong> failure at <strong>the</strong>ir duties. Pope Innocent III declared "that <strong>the</strong><br />
responsibility for <strong>the</strong> depravity of <strong>the</strong> peop<strong>le</strong>'s customs belongs fundamentally to<br />
<strong>the</strong> c<strong>le</strong>rgy, <strong>and</strong> that from <strong>the</strong>re flowed all
