Academic Decathlon is a nationally recognized,<br />

intellectually competitive, and fun academic<br />

team competition open to grades 9 – 12 and<br />

designed to include students from all academic<br />

backgrounds. Each team consists of three “A”<br />

students (Honors: un-weighted GPA of 4.00 –<br />

3.75), three “B” students (Scholastic: unweighted<br />

GPA of 3.74 – 3.00) and three “C”<br />

students (Varsity: un-weighted GPA of 2.99 –<br />

0.00). AD is a fun way to challenge yourself<br />

intellectually, be part of a competitive team,<br />

and win scholarship money. Competition is at<br />

the District, Regional, State, and National levels.<br />

Academic Octathlon is a nationally recognized,<br />

intellectually competitive, and fun academic<br />

team competition open to grades 9 – 10 and<br />

designed to include students from all academic<br />

backgrounds. The competition consist of a onehour<br />

essay and written comprehensive exams are<br />

given in music, art, language/literature,<br />

mathematics, economics, science, and social<br />

studies. In addition to the topic content, which<br />

changes from year to year, there are general<br />

knowledge questions in math, economics, music,<br />

literature, and art. AO is a fun way to challenge<br />

yourself intellectually, be part of a competitive<br />

team. Preparation for AO begins in the Spring of<br />

the school year and students are required to<br />

meet after school. There is a designated AO<br />

study hall.<br />

The ASL Club's purpose is to allow current and<br />

former ASL student's to increase their knowledge<br />

of Deaf culture & Sign language through fun<br />

activities. Student's will be learning and<br />

practicing new vocabulary & using their skills in<br />

a social setting. The club will meet every other<br />

Thursday and the cost is $25 for membership<br />

which will include a t-shirt.<br />

Best Buddies is a national organization dedicated<br />

to enhancing the lives of students with mental<br />

and physical challenges by providing<br />

opportunities for one-on-one friendships.<br />

Interested students are interviewed and<br />

matched with a participant. Students will then<br />

participate in group and individual social<br />

activities with their “Buddies”. Meetings are<br />

held before and after school to organize Best<br />

Buddies activities.

<strong>Seven</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> Book Club<br />

Students meet regularly to choose books from<br />

different genres. They gather to discuss, share<br />

ideas and predictions after reading the book. The<br />

book club is open to anyone who has a love for<br />

reading. We meet on Tuesdays once a month<br />

after school in the library. Listen for the<br />

announcements for the next meeting.<br />

Cheer Try-outs are opened to any 9 th , 10 th and<br />

11 th grade student who is interested in promoting<br />

school spirit. A mandatory parent information<br />

meeting will be held in February to inform parents<br />

of the financial obligations and team requirements<br />

for membership. A try-out clinic will be held for<br />

one week prior to try-outs to assist interested<br />

students in preparation and the actual try-out at<br />

the end of that week. Cheerleading is a yearround<br />

activity.<br />

A competitive improvisation troupe open to all<br />

grades. Students undergo an audition in the fall.<br />

The troupe meets regularly and plays in matches<br />

against other area schools. Students learn<br />

teamwork, quick thinking & sharpen their acting<br />

skills through improv.<br />

Students practice daily in the computer lab as our<br />

team strives to earn District, Regional, State and<br />

National Championships in Computer Science.<br />

Practice times are held at the convenience of the<br />

students anytime from 2:45 until 4:00 on most<br />

days. Club meetings are Wednesday from 3:15<br />

until 4:00<br />

Dance Team try-outs are open to any 9 th , 10 th and<br />

11 th grade student who is interested in being a<br />

part of a dance team and promoting school spirit.<br />

Interested students must be enrolled in a<br />

drill/dance training class the year they wish to<br />

audition. A mandatory parent meeting will be held<br />

prior the auditions to inform parents of the<br />

financial obligations and team requirements for<br />

membership. A try-out clinic will be held for one<br />

week to prepare students for the try-out. The<br />

actual try-outs will be held in late Fall. Sapphire<br />

Dance Team is a year-round activity.<br />

DARE role models serve as positive role models<br />

to influence younger students to live in a drug-free<br />

and healthy life style. The role models attend<br />

DARE skate nights; DARE graduations and other<br />

community events. Our meetings are scheduled<br />

on the first Friday of every month.

Students work in teams to solve one of five longterm<br />

problems creatively and efficiently. Students<br />

also work on spontaneous problem-solving skills.<br />

Teams meet with Mr. Romero after school at<br />

times determined by the team.<br />

Future Business Leaders of America is open to<br />

any student. There are no prerequisites to join,<br />

but we have an annual fee of $30.00 which<br />

includes local, state, and national dues and a club<br />

t-shirt. FBLA is an association of students<br />

preparing for careers in business and businessrelated<br />

fields. The national high school division<br />

has more than 215,000 members. Members<br />

participate in bi-monthly meetings, community<br />

service and fundraising projects, as well as<br />

socials. A major part of FBLA is our competitions<br />

which are held in the spring. Students compete in<br />

area competitions and may advance to state and<br />

national competitions.<br />

FFA is a national youth group that promotes<br />

agriculture. Students raise and show animals at<br />

livestock shows, such as Houston Livestock Show<br />

and the <strong>Katy</strong> <strong>ISD</strong> Livestock Show. FFA members<br />

compete in judging and leadership contests.<br />

Students can receive scholarships; attend State<br />

and National Conventions, leadership training,<br />

etc. Anyone can join if they are enrolled in an<br />

Agriculture Science class.<br />

The French Club will offer exposure to the French<br />

speaking world and its cultures. The intent is to be<br />

educational and fun for its members. It is the<br />

intention of this club to promote the use of the<br />

French language and offer activities that will<br />

enhance enjoyment and knowledge of French<br />

culture. Annual club dues are $20 per year which<br />

includes the cost of the French Club tee-shirt.<br />

The French club is open to students who have<br />

been or are currently enrolled in French classes,<br />

or students who have a genuine interest in the<br />

Francophone world.

F.O.R. is an outreach group designed for students<br />

to reach out to other students and to assist and<br />

mentor new students. This group meets bimonthly<br />

listen to announcements for dates, times<br />

and location.<br />

The German Club is open to any student currently<br />

enrolled in German at SLHS, planning on<br />

enrolling in German or students who speak<br />

German. The club has many events each<br />

semester, including dinners out, Wurstfest, movie<br />

nights, nights out at the game, and holiday<br />

events. We also have active philanthropy in which<br />

we give back to our community. If you would like<br />

to learn more about the culture of German<br />

speaking countries and the language as a whole,<br />

please join the German Club.<br />

SLHS German Honor Society is by invitation only<br />

to those students who meet academic criteria in<br />

German and across the curriculum.<br />

HOSA is a student organization whose mission is<br />

to promote career opportunities in health care and<br />

to enhance the delivery of quality health care to<br />

all people. HOSA membership is for secondary<br />

and postsecondary students interested in Health<br />

Care Careers. Membership fees of $20 enroll<br />

students at local, state and national levels.<br />

Tentative plans include fundraising activities,<br />

arranging volunteer opportunities and a school<br />

blood drive.<br />

Junior Girls is a support organization for junior<br />

varsity male athletes. Junior Girls promote good<br />

sportsmanship and camaraderie among the junior<br />

class through various activities, including hall<br />

decorations, locker decorations, bulletin boards,<br />

pep rally signs, and other approved activities.<br />

The Junior Class will work to generate fundraising<br />

opportunities for the Class of 2009. These funds<br />

raised will offset the cost of senior activities.<br />

Meeting are open to all Juniors, listen for<br />

announcements for dates and times.<br />

Mu Alpha Theta () is a national high school<br />

and junior and community college mathematics<br />

honor society that is co-sponsored by the National<br />

Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the<br />

Mathematical Association of America. Many<br />

chapters participate extensively in regional and<br />

state competitions. Our chapter also does<br />

extensive tutoring in different math classes and<br />

has various activities and meetings. The club<br />

was formed to “engender keener interest in<br />

mathematics, to develop sound scholarship in the<br />

subject and promote enjoyment of mathematics<br />

among high school and junior college students.”

NHS is open to junior and senior students who<br />

have at least a 3.75 GPA and receive teacher<br />

recommendations. Students may be eligible in<br />

the spring of their sophomore year. Members are<br />

required to earn 25 service hours per year to<br />

remain in good standing. Many opportunities to<br />

earn these hours will be available to the students.<br />

The <strong>Seven</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> HS Quiz Bowl Team practices<br />

daily from 2:45-4:00 in preparation for weekday<br />

afternoon and weekend matches against area<br />

schools. Questions range from Math and Science<br />

to Literature and the Arts and Pop-Culture. The<br />

Official meeting is on Friday from 2:45-4:00.<br />

We are a service organization that is currently<br />

involved in school wide paper and battery<br />

recycling. Our regular meetings are in room 2224<br />

on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. It is a<br />

great way to earn service hours at school!<br />

The Robotics Team will participate in<br />

competitions and attend the Regional and State<br />

Competitions.<br />

Senior Women is a support organization for<br />

varsity football athletes. Senior Women promote<br />

good sportsmanship and camaraderie among the<br />

senior class through various activities, including<br />

hall decorations, locker decorations, bulletin<br />

boards, pep rally signs, and other approved<br />

activities.<br />

Senior Women meet on Thursday at 7:00 am and<br />

2:45 pm.<br />

Any current or previous Spanish student who is<br />

interested in experiencing different Spanishspeaking<br />

cultures from around the world is eligible<br />

to join Spanish Club. Social events are held<br />

approximately once per month. The social events<br />

may consist of dinners at various restaurants,<br />

volunteering in the community, and many other<br />

cultural experiences. By purchasing a Spanish<br />

Club membership of $25, the student will receive<br />

a club T-shirt and first-hand cultural lessons.<br />

Spanish Club promotes understanding and<br />

celebration of different Spanish-speaking cultures.<br />

With the 2007-<strong>2008</strong> school year beginning with<br />

over 300 members, students should not miss out!<br />

The <strong>Seven</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> Spartan Debate Team is an<br />

organization that competes in a variety of speech,<br />

debate, and interpretation contests at the local,<br />

state and national levels. Events include speaking<br />

on current events, prepared oratorical speeches,<br />

improvisational speeches, debates on government<br />

policy or values in conflict, student congress, solo<br />

and duet dramatic or humorous performances, and<br />

interpretive reading. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays<br />

and Wednesdays. Tournament sign up is always<br />

posted on the Debate Bulletin Board inside room<br />

2671. Membership is open to any student in grades<br />

9-12. Membership is also available for parents in<br />

the Debate Booster Club.<br />

SOS is a service organization for students<br />

designed to highlight the importance of giving back<br />

to the community. Current Students can join by<br />

Oct. 1 st . New Students can join throughout the<br />

school year. Each student can earn an award pin if<br />

he/she reaches their particular class requirements<br />

by the end of March of each school year. Seniors<br />

can earn a service cord that is worn at graduation.<br />

The requirements and volunteer opportunities are<br />

stated on the SLHS web page under Student Zone.<br />

We meet every first Thursday of Sept. Nov. Feb.<br />

April and May at 6:45 am and 2:45 pm in the Black<br />

Box – Room 1130.<br />

Student Council is an organization based on school<br />

and community service. Every year the club<br />

organizes events such as Homecoming, Food<br />

drives, and Santa Sleigh. Student Council also<br />

promotes school spirit through Good<br />

Sportsmanship League and recognition of<br />

numerous extracurricular activities. The goal of<br />

Student Council is to positively represent the<br />

student body within the school and in the<br />

community. The Student Council meets every<br />

Tuesday before.<br />

Thespians are the drama organization at SLHS.<br />

The club provides a continuing cycle of activities,<br />

both social and theatrical, for SLHS students<br />

interested in theatre production. The club is open<br />

to all <strong>Seven</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> students, whether or not they<br />

are enrolled in theatre classes or involved in<br />

theatre productions. Students earn points for<br />

membership in the International Thespian Society,<br />

the national organization, by participating in all<br />

areas of production, from acting to backstage<br />

technical support to box office and publicity.

Each of the 23 teams has practices that are<br />

arranged with the teacher that is in charge of that<br />

event. Events are Informative Speaking,<br />

Persuasive Speaking, Prose Interpretation, Poetry<br />

Interpretation, LD Debate, Calculator, Math,<br />

Science, Accounting, Computer Applications,<br />

Literary Criticism, Social Studies, Spelling and<br />

Vocabulary, Computer Science, Current Issues<br />

and Events, Ready Writing, Number Sense, News<br />

Writing, Feature Writing, Headline Writing, and<br />

Editorial Writing. There is something for everyone.<br />
