Several organizations provided funding for this project. <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong><br />
provided graduate teaching assistantships, travel funds, the Aquatic Biology Enhancement<br />
Fellowship, the Graduate Council Research Fellowship, and the National Alumni Association’s<br />
License Tag Fellowship. Funding was also provided by the Walter Coxe Research Scholarship<br />
(Birmingham Audubon Society), North American Benthological Society Conservation Award,<br />
Ralph Stone Graduate Fellowship (National Speleological Society), and a National Science<br />
Foundation’s Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant (DEB-1011403). Two <strong>Alabama</strong> State<br />
Wildlife Grants entitled ‘‘Assessment <strong>of</strong> population dynamics <strong>of</strong> cave inhabiting crayfish in<br />
<strong>Alabama</strong>’’ awarded to Alex Huryn and Bernard R. Kuhajda (Grant #T-03-02 and T-3-3-2) also<br />
provided support.<br />
I was fortunate to have made many friends during my time at UA. <strong>The</strong>y have made my<br />
experience here the most enjoyable time <strong>of</strong> my life to date. <strong>The</strong>ir diverse personalities, tastes,<br />
and insights have made me a better person and I am truly thankful to them all. Last, but certainly<br />
not least, I thank my family. <strong>The</strong>y provided an environment that allowed me to pursue my own<br />
dreams. <strong>The</strong>ir support has been unwavering, even when those dreams were not understood.<br />
