BLOOD DONOR CLINIC
On Fri., April 22, 55 brave souls
gave blood at our school's second
blood donor clinic of the year.
(Canadian Blood Services' goal for
us was to book 55 donors and collect
36 units. We ended up with 34 units
of blood and 10 deferrals.) This
means that, for each unit collected,
there is a possibility that three lives
can be saved. The organizers, Mme.
Charron and Mrs. Kelly-Wiggins,
extend their appreciation to staff
who also donated, covered classes
for other staff donors and popped in
to encourage our students. Great
community effort! A special thank
you to Suzanne Birnbaum, our
parent volunteer, who handled the
registration/check-in table with
expertise.
We had many first-time donors
and the students were so proud of
themselves! It is our hope that they
will continue to be lifelong donors.
DREAM TEAM 2005
BY REDMOND O'BRIEN
On March 11, 14 students and
'three teachers from Immaculata high
school, excited beyond belief,
boarded the plane for Consuelo in
the Dominican Republic. We were
embarking on a one-week cultural
experience during which we would
live with host families. Apart from
developing a close relationship with
our host family members and
experiencing the daily life of a
family living in third-world poverty,
our group embarked on several
adventures to gain an overall
perspective of the country. We
visited schools and bateyes (Haitian
slums), played baseball and
interacted with former sugarcane
slaves. Visiting the bateyes was
shocking in two different ways. The
initial shock was the poverty: the
abundant garbage, lack of clean
water and children without clothing.
Even more shocking were the smiles
on the faces of the children and
elderly people. Despite the
devastating poverty, life, in its
essence, was beautiful. There was a
collective spirit of love. The men
were working in the sugarcane
fields, but we had the privilege of
connecting with the women, children
and elderly. We also visited the
schools attended by the children
from the bateyes. The smiles never
ceased to touch our hearts.
The intensity of our enlightening
experience with the Dominican
people and their country would not
have been possible without the
sisters of the Immaculate Conception.
Sister .0'Shea, a former
teacher at Immaculata, organized our
daily events and prepared us for each
experience. I think that our group of
students and teachers agrees that the
Sisters have planted a vision in our
heart, which is reaching out to those
in need.
BY BONNIE MCLAURIN
Corpus Christi School was
singing the blues at the end of April
and the beginning of May. Blues in
the Schools is sponsored by the
Cisco Systems Bluesfest. The
program allows blues musicians to
visit Ottawa area schools and teach
students the roots of blues music
and how it has influenced other
music such as jazz and rock.
Four visiting musicians came to
sing and speak to the students:
Lester Quitzau, who is a Canadian
roots music artist from Western
Canada; Trevor Findlay, who is from
Ottawa and heads the Trevor
Findlay Band; Sharon Riley and
Stephen Lewis, who are from
Toronto and whd had the whole
school grooving and moving to
The Junior and Senior Kindergarten
students in Mrs. Wong's and
Mme. Bergeron's classes, with
support from Mrs. Corrigan, had the
privilege of working with Sharon
Riley and Stephen Lewis for five
days. The students' hard work
culminated with a Gospel concert
for grades 1 to 6. Their enthusiasm
and joy for Gospel music shone like
a beacon of light.
We are looking forward to
bringing the kindergarten students
to Bluesfest on July 17 to perform
on stage with Sharon Riley and
Stephen Lewis. What a great gig to
start off the Kindergarten students'
music careers! Wow!
