Rocking for seniors
Hawaiian style
BY MARY PAL
The Glebe Centre's newest
residence was rocking on Sat., April
30, as participants of the eighth
annual Rock-a-Thon spent the
afternoon raising funds for seniors.
By day's end, $23,667.50 had been
raised and pledges are still coming
in.
Nine teams took turns keeping
their chairs rocking, including a celebrity
team with MPP Jim Watson,
who has been Honourary Chair
since the event began; Kevin
Nelson, of Majic 100; Mayor Bob
Chiarelli; MPP Richard Patten;
Councillor Clive Doucet; former
Councillor Inez Berg; The Glebe
Centre's Executive Director, Dawn
O'Leary; and Board President Gary
0' Byrne.
Four teams were formed by
groups outside The Glebe Centre:
event sponsor Capcorp's Team; Yet
Keen Seniors' Centre; the Celebrity
Team; and the Community Team,
which included Loeb Glebe owner
Jim McKeen and manager Karen
Carmody; along with various
community volunteers and firefighters.
The Glebe Centre teams
were formed by staff in the longterm
care home and in Abbotsford
House, crafters and teddy-bear makers
in Abbotsford House, members
of the Abbotsford Council and even
a team of residents who called
themselves the "Rockin' Babes."
In keeping with this year's
Hawaiian theme, rockers were
entertained by a lively assortment of
singers and dancers, including the
Ottawa Valley Theatrical Seniors,
resident Helen Hudson and daughter
Susan Galvin playing Hawaiian
guitar, Abbotsford House volunteer
Nell Khandldiar who kept the crowd
hopping with her surfin' calisthenics,
and the talented duo of
Kathryn Cruikshank and Sarah Kehler
whose song-and-dance numbers
had the audience clapping along.
The committee of volunteers who
ran the event provided Hawaiianstyle
refreshments, served by 10-
year-old hula girls Hanna Glover
and Meredith Pal. Two floors of the
new building were decorated to put
everyone in a Hawaiian mood. The
afternoon's tally of pledges was
recorded on a large palm tree poster
designed by volunteer Emily
Brascoupé. Beautiful gift baskets
were presented to rockers who had
collected the greatest amounts in
pledges.
Two-thirds of the amount raised
came from generous sponsors: event
sponsor Capcorp Financial; major
sponsors RBC Dominion Securities,
Royal LePage and Governor's Walk,
operated by Dymon Management,
(purchaser of the former Glebe
Centre tower on Holmwood Avenue);
contributing sponsors Collins
Barrow, Emond Harnden, Giant
Tiger, JSI Telecom, Manulife
Financial, McKeen Loeb Glebe,
Medico-Dental Pharmacy, Sodexho
Canada, The Ottawa Citizen and the
Tri-Co Group; rocking chair
sponsors Barry Hobin & Associates
Architects, Elite Draperies, Independent
Linen Service, Rhodes &
Williams, Snelling Paper, Wescom
Solutions and Praxair Medigas; and
supporting sponsors Abbotsford
Council, BFI Waste Services, CCEA
and Rock-a-Thon Alumni. The
committee is grateful for their
support and generosity.
All funds raised support seniors'
programs provided by The Glebe
Centre to its residents and clients
throughout the community.
A big thank you to all who helped
out at the event. If you missed the
