Taking yoga to Ottawa's high-risk populations
BY SARADA EASTHAM
For Mary, a resident of a local
women's shelter, learning yoga has
enriched her ability to deal with the
challenges in her life. "The classes
have helped me to heal," she says, "I
am more able to cope with stress and
feel less pain, because of the classes.
I love my yoga time. It is time just
for me."
For the last few years, the Ottawa
Radha Yoga Centre has been
offering classes to women like Mary
and to other special-needs groups in
the Ottawa area, including people
living with multiple sclerosis and
cancer; immigrant women; and
teens who are mothers, pregnant or
living on the streets. This year's
focus has been on offering classes to
at-risk youth. Already, partnerships
have been formed with Ottawa
advocacy groups such as St. Mary
Home, a centre for pregnant teens,
and the Youth Services Bureau.
There are many options for
,
Galitcha fundraiser will take place at the GCC on June 18.
people who have the social resources
to access yoga. However, for those
who do not, the culture around yoga
can be intimidating. This is
incredibly sad, because it is often the
most vulnerable populations who are
able to gain the most from the
practices of yoga.
So how can yoga help people?
What makes it a radical healing modality
that can work for everyone?
Yoga is about union. It is about
bringing your body, mind and spirit
together. This is an ideal practice,
especially for those who are in crisis
situations, as it can help them to
focus and find relaxation under any
circumstances. It is very moving to
watch the participants get to know
their bodies and begin working
through healing and the restoration
of self-esteem.
To enable this valuable work to
continue, the Ottawa Radha Yoga
Centre is planning a summer fundraiser
and has enlisted in the help of
some of Ottawa's favourites.
Galitcha, a world-renowned
Ottawa-based group that weaves a
vibrant tapestry of East Indian,
jazz and global music, will be
performing, along with several
classical Indian dancers, at the
