The Generals
are on the march
BY SEAN MILLER
Ottawa is regarded for many
things across the country, but
generally not for football. Many
would be surprised to learn that
Ottawa boasts the largest minor
football league in Canada, and this
year the National Capital Amateur
Football Association will be
marking its 50th anniversary. The.
NCAFA contains 12 clubs. One
team, whose area includes the
Glebe, is experiencing a remarkable
turnaround.
In the 2004 season, the Generals'
Tyke-level teamthe youngest age
group--captured the Maison D'Or
East Division Championship in a
roundrobin tournament, played
during half-time at the Ottawa
Renegades' home games. They also
won the Rowe Cup. For other age
groups, the Generals have moved
from the basement in the standings
to the middle of the pack. Quinn
believes that the club can build upon
last year's success. To do this, he explained,
the club will need to
Will Knoll and Owen Taylor with the Rowe Cup. The boys were offensive
linemen for the 2004 East Ottawa Generals Tyke team that captured both the
Maison d'Or Ottawa Renegades East Division Championship (played last
year during half-time at Renegades games).
Until last year, the East Ottawa
Generals had been regarded as a
laughingstock. The club had not had
a successful season in over a decade,
players and coaches had lost their
fervour for the game, and new recruits
were increasingly harder to
come by. But before the 2004
season, something changed. A new
generation of coaches and parents,
who had seen their children growing
increasingly more frustrated with
their football club, took over the
team.
Mark Quinn, the club's current
co-president, was one of those
parents. Quinn has an excellent
sporting pedigree: both his father
and his uncle played for the former
Ottawa Roughriders, and his brother
played in the NHL for 14 years,
including seasons with the Senators.
In a recent telephone interview, he
explained how a "core group of
players and coaches" has brought a
new attitude to the club. This new attitude
immediately produced results.
continue recruiting new "blood" into
the organization.
While the Generals are now
seeing an increase in enrollment,
some of their area neighbourhoods
are still under-represented. Children
from the Glebe, Rockcliffe and
Centretown make up less of the
roster than their counterparts from
Vanier or Sandy Hill. Quinn believes
this is because parents in those areas
thought their children would not
have a positive experience. He wants
that impression to change.
With a new generation of parents,
players and coaches involved, the
East Ottawa Generals are again experiencing
success. Quinn recalled
how, last season, "it was heartwarming
to see the kids who have
struggled on the field get to raise a
trophy"something he hopes will
continue for many years.
