ballot box in the 1952 municipal
election. The late Charlotte Whitton
female full-time mayor, an alderman
COFFEE WITH CLIVE
HAS MOVED
As I've mentioned in previous
columns, in the interest of supporting
another of the ward's many
coffee shops, my monthly drop-in
chat session has moved from its
former home at the Wild Oat to the
Second Cup in Old Ottawa South
(corner of Sunnyside and Bank).
Coffee with Clive happens the first
Friday of every month from 10-11
a.m. It's a great chance to chat about
city issues in an informal,
neighbourhood setting. The spring
and summer sessions at the Second
Cup will be particularly pleasant on
the outdoor patio they've built.
Hope to see you there.
BANK STREET
RECONSTRUCTION
CONSULTATION
The city's consultation is moving
along well, with the second of three
open houses set for mid- to late
June. One of the issues I'm working
to resolve is how to find room in the
budget to include the burial of hydro
wires in the project. This has come
up as a consensus priority from the
community association and from the
business community.
THE ALTA VISTA CORRIDOR
A TALE OF TWO CITIES
Things are hopping at city hall
these days and the focus is on how
we are going to grow. On one side,
you have the Mayor and four innercity
councillors calling for an end to
the long-held planning view that we
need a four-lane car and truck route
from Conroy to Nicholas through
the Alta Vista corridor as part of our
medium- to long-term transportation
planning network.
On the other side, you have some
councillors from the high-growth
areas of the south end, supported by
city staff and consultants, saying that
we need to preserve the theoretical
road capacity of a four-lane roadway
from Conroy to Nicholas in our
Official Plan as a means of servicing
the city's growth over the next 20
years.
On Mon., April 11, I joined the
Mayor and Councillors Holmes,
Bedard and Legendre to put forward
an alternative proposal for the Alta
Vista corridor that would provide a
simplified, less-costly car and rapidtransit
connection from Riverside
Drive to the hospitals. Our alternative
proposal also included:
*a new parking lot for the hospitals
with a 20-year lease
*a request for proposals for two
community/sports activity areas in
the corridor, extending boundary to
boundary
a cycling, commuter and recreational
path along the entire corridor
use of the corridor lands beside
Springhurst Park in Ottawa East for
recreational purposes, consistent
with other parts of the corridor
an Official Plan Review in 2006 to
consider the removal from the
Official Plan of the Alta Vista
Transportation Corridor as a car and
truck route
We want to improve access to the
hospitals, but at a $15-million dollar
cost, not hundreds of millions. There
are thousands of employees at the
hospitals complex, and right now,
there is no direct, rapid-transit link
for public transit or ambulances. My
proposal and the Mayor's will give
people from the entire region that
rapid-transit link, which will then
free up road space for folks who
wish to drive from the south end.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
We add roughly 100 kilometres of
new road every year to our road
system. Meanwhile, we can't even
afford to clean and repair what we
have now. Just the northern section
of the Alta Vista car and truck road
would cost somewhere around $200
million. Realigning Riverside Drive
through an old city dump, for
example, doesn't come cheap. If
growth is dependent on more
expressways, bridges, collectors,
interchanges, etc., then we need to
think about slowing it down until we
can figure out how to grow in a way
we can afford. This is exactly what
many cities are doing.
LOOKING FOR HOST FAMILIES
Would you like to experience
a different culture without leaving home?
Host a student from Spain for a few weeks.
Canada Linc* English is sponsoring a group of young students,
14 to 18 years of age, who are travelling to Ottawa to take part
in a 4 week program, from June 29 to July 26. The program is
designed to encourage language fluency and teach the students
about Canadian culture.
Students will participate in a structured program that
includes daily classes and activities as well as full day trips.
The group is accompanied by a teacher from Spain. All
students receive transit passes to travel to school and all have
full medical insurance.
The benefits and rewards of hosting are numerous.
Not only do host families learn about another culture and
share Canadian hospitality with their guests, but new and
lasting friendships are often developed. Canadian teens
studying Spanish may also get a chance to practice their
language skills with the visiting students. And many hosts
have travelled abroad to visit their new friends.
Families are compensated $600.00 per month to cover the
costs of hosting a student.
