closed to all outside parties. Media members
2010-11 DUKE MEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE
Duke Basketball Notebook
106th Season of Basketball
Duke is entering its 106th season of
basketball in 2010-11. The Blue Devils have
compiled a 1,912-822 record to rank fourth
all-time in victories.
Singler & Smith Named Team Captains
The Blue Devils selected seniors Kyle
Singler and Nolan Smith as captains for
the 2010-11 season. Both players are firsttime
captains for the Blue Devils.
Blue Devils Return Nine Letterwinners
Despite the loss of five upperclassmen,
including three senior starters from last
season’s NCAA Championship team, Duke
returns several key components from a
year ago. The 12-man roster features
nine returning letterwinners, including
three players with extensive starting
experience. Seniors Casey Peters, Kyle
Singler and Nolan Smith along with
junior Miles Plumlee give Duke four
upperclassmen. The roster is stacked with
talented underclassmen, as Seth Curry,
Andre Dawkins, Ryan Kelly, Mason
Plumlee and Todd Zafirovski enter their
sophomore seasons and the Blue Devils
welcome a highly-touted freshmen class
featuring Josh Hairston, Kyrie Irving
and Tyler Thornton.
The group of nine returning players
helped Duke to a 35-5 record, the NCAA
Championship and a second consecutive ACC
Tournament title in 2009-10. The Blue Devils
won their final 10 games and 18 of the final
19 games of the season.
The talent level remains abundant on
the current squad, as it features six players
who earned prep All-America recognition,
including five who competed as McDonald’s
All-Americas.
Singler at Home on the Wing
Senior Kyle Singler returns as one of
the lead candidates for National Player of the
Year honors in 2010-11. The versatile wing
has shown a well-rounded skill set through
his first three years that make him one of the
toughest matchups in the NCAA. He moved
primarily to the wing last season after splitting
time between the perimeter and post
his first two seasons.
Singler, the 2010 NCAA Final Four MOP,
averaged 17.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.4
assists per game a year ago. He finished
the year ranked among the league leaders
in scoring, rebounding, free throw percentage,
three-point percentage, three-point field
goals and minutes played.
The Medford, Ore., native has started
110 of his 111 career games and currently
ranks 18th with 1,767 career points. Singler
is 233 points shy of becoming the 11th
2,000-point scorer in Duke history.
Backcourt Among the Best in the NCAA
Senior co-captain Nolan Smith headlines
a talented and deep backcourt for the
Blue Devils. One season after the roster
featured just three true guards, Duke now
has one of the top backcourts in the country.
Joining Smith are sophomore sharp-shooters
Seth Curry and Andre Dawkins as well as
a pair of elite freshmen in Kyrie Irving and
Tyler Thornton.
Smith, a 2010 second team All-ACC pick,
is coming off a breakout junior campaign and
has blossomed into a first team All-America
candidate. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native
averaged 17.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.0
assists and 1.2 steals per game a year ago.
Smith, the 2010 NCAA Tournament South
Region MOP, scored 20 or more points 16
times in 2009-10 and posted career highs in
nearly every statistical category. He was also
an NCAA All-Final Four, ACC All-Tournament
and NIT Season Tip-Off team selection.
Curry is ready to contribute in the backcourt
after sitting out the 2009-10 season
per NCAA transfer rules. He averaged an
NCAA freshmen-best 20.2 points per game
at Liberty in 2007-08 and is poised to showcase
his skills on a bigger stage this season.
Curry is a deadly long-range shooter with
underrated ball handling, play-making and
finishing abilities.
Dawkins provides Duke with another
potent scoring option on the perimeter. He
knocked down 36 three-pointers as a freshman
and is one of the top pure shooters in
the ACC. Dawkins has steadily improved his
ball handling skills and midrange game in
the offseason and is prepared for a breakout
sophomore season.
Irving, an NCAA Freshman of the Year
candidate, is an up-tempo point guard that
has the skill set to be among the elite lead
guards in the NCAA. He excels in transition
and around the rim, but also has a solid
outside shooting touch and mindset to direct
the halfcourt offense. Irving, a finalist for
the Naismith High School Player of the Year
Award, directed the U.S. Under-18 team to
a 5-0 record and a gold medal at the 2010
FIBA Americas U18 Championship.
Thornton, a Washington, D.C., native is
a scrappy defender with strong leadership
skills. He has shown solid scoring instincts
and an uncanny ability to make everyone
around him better. Thornton gives the Blue
Devils added depth and versatility in the
backcourt.
Duke also gets a boost in practice with
the return of Casey Peters. A former team
manager, Peters is a hard working senior that
shows up to compete each and every day.
Peters’ sister, Haley, is a freshman on the
Duke women’s basketball team. They are the
first brother-sister basketball combination at
Duke.
Young & Athletic in the Frontcourt
Duke’s frontcourt will be young, athletic
and talented in 2010-11. Junior Miles
Plumlee is the lone upperclass big man
on the roster with Ryan Kelly and Mason
Plumlee ready to make big strides in their
second seasons at Duke. Freshman Josh
Hairston also will be in the mix for minutes
on the interior for the Blue Devils.
All four members of the frontcourt rotation
are strong in the open floor and should
benefit from outstanding perimeter play by
Smith, Irving, Curry and company.
Miles Plumlee has steadily progressed
through his first two seasons in Durham
and is poised for a breakthrough campaign
as a junior. The 6’10”, 245-pound forward
is an elite run and jump athlete with rising
confidence. Last season, he led the Blue
Devils with 33 dunks and finished fourth on
the team with 26 blocks. Plumlee averaged
5.2 points and 4.9 rebounds in just over 16
minutes per game. He also shot 56.1 percent
(83-of-148) from the field and posted four
double-doubles on the year.
Kelly possesses a great feel for the game
and has used the offseason to improve his
strength and athleticism. The Raleigh, N.C.,
native has added over 20 pounds from a year
ago to withstand the rigors of ACC play. Kelly
has an advanced offensive skill set out to the
three-point line. With the added strength,
Kelly should improve upon last season’s
averages of 1.2 points and 1.1 rebounds per
game.
Mason Plumlee has added 10 pounds
in the offseason and is in position for a big
sophomore season. The Warsaw, Ind., native
recorded 3.7 points and 3.1 rebounds
with 30 blocks and 24 dunks a year ago. He
excels in the open floor as a finisher and as
a passer and could thrive in Duke’s up-tempo
system. Plumlee has shown range out to the
three-point line and the ability to put the ball
on the floor and finish at the rim. He also has
the aggressiveness to consistently crash the
boards on both ends of the floor.
Hairston is another young big man that
shines in transition. The Fredericksburg, Va.,
native is a quick jumper with long arms, allowing
him to play bigger than his 6’7” frame.
Hairston, a third team Parade All-America in
2010, has a nice shooting touch out to 15
feet and is able to use his speed and agility
to be a nuisance on the offensive glass.
Last season, he averaged 20.2 points, 10.2
rebounds and 2.1 assists per game to grab
Gatorade Player of the Year honors out of
Maryland.
Sophomore Todd Zafirovski also returns
to provide the Blue Devils with depth on
the interior. He has steadily improved since
joining the team as a walk-on in December
of 2009 and is a valuable practice player for
the Blue Devils.
2010-11 DUKE MEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE
Coaching Staff Remains in Tact
Mike Krzyzewski returns for his
31st year as the head coach at Duke. He
is joined by associate head coaches Steve
Wojciechowski (12th season) and Chris
Collins (11th season) as well as assistant
coach Nate James (third season).
The coaching staff has guided Duke to a
65-12 record, including a 24-8 mark in ACC
play, over the past two seasons. The Blue
Devils won the 2010 NCAA Championship
and a pair of ACC titles in that span.
Sustained Success
Duke has won 20 or more games 45
times in its 105 years of basketball. Including
its 35-5 mark a year ago, Duke has won at
least 20 games for 14 consecutive seasons.
The Blue Devils have also won 30 or more
games 11 times since the 1985-86 season.
Moving Up the Victory Ladder
Mike Krzyzewski is one of just six
coaches in Division I history to reach 800
career wins. His 868 wins rank fourth among
college basketball’s victory leaders and first
among active coaches. With 795 victories
as the Duke head coach, Krzyzewski is five
wins shy of becoming the fifth coach in NCAA
history to win at least 800 games at one
school. He is also the winningest coach in
NCAA Tournament history and ranks second
all-time in career ACC wins.
Duke in Elite Victory Club
Duke is one of just four schools in NCAA
history to have earned at least 1,900 all-time
victories. Now with 1,911 wins, the Blue
Devils join Kentucky (2,023), North Carolina
(2,003) and Kansas (2,003) as members of
the prestigious 1,900-win club.
First and Foremost
Entering the 2010-11 season, Duke has
been ranked No. 1 in the nation (Associated
Press poll) a total of 111 weeks, the secondhighest
figure in college basketball history
behind only UCLA (134).
Since the 1997-98 season, the Blue
Devils have been ranked No. 1 in the AP
poll 56 weeks, 22 more weeks than the next
closest school (North Carolina, 34). Duke has
reached No. 1 in the poll in nine of the past
12 seasons.
NCAA History
Duke, which made its 34th NCAA Tournament
appearance last season, has been
one of the best NCAA Tournament teams in
the history of college basketball. The Blue
Devils’ .758 winning percentage (94-30) in
NCAA Tournament play is the best all-time.
Duke’s 94 NCAA Tournament victories and
124 tournament games rank fourth all-time
in NCAA history.
In 2010, the Blue Devils made their
15th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance
and 26th in the last 27 seasons under
Mike Krzyzewski. Coach K has led Duke
to 11 Final Fours since 1986 and four NCAA
K is the only active head coach in the ACC to
with four or more league championships.
Duke Anniversaries in 2010-11
25th Anniversary of the 1986 Final Four team
Mike Krzyzewski guided the 1986 to the Final Four
and an appearance in the NCAA Championship game.
Although the Blue Devils fell, 72-69, to Louisville in the
title games, the 1986 season helped solidify Duke’s
standing as national power.
Naismith Award winner Johnny Dawkins along
with fellow seniors Mark Alarie, Jay Bilas and David
Henderson led Duke to a 37-3 mark overall and a 12-2
record in ACC-play. The Blue Devils won the ACC regular
season and ACC Tournament Championship as well as
the Preseason Big Apple NIT.
Duke opened the season with 16 straight wins before
suffering back-to-back losses in late January. The Blue
Devils rebounded to win 21 straight games before falling
in the NCAA title game.
The senior class, which was part of an 11-17 season in
1982-83 that had many fans doubting Coach K, combined
to average 58.4 points and 19.5 rebounds per game.
Dawkins earned first team All-America, All-ACC,
All-NCAA Final Four and East Regional MVP honors,
while Alarie was named All-ACC, All-NCAA Final Four,
All-East Regional and honorable mention All-America.
Tommy Amaker was also named to the All-NCAA Final
Four team.
20th Anniversary of the 1991 NCAA Championship
Mike Krzyzewski joined UCLA’s John Wooden as
the only coach to lead a school to four consecutive Final
Fours in 1991. This time it proved to be the magical trip
as Duke captured its first national championship. The
Blue Devils recorded a stirring upset of undefeated and
seemingly invincible UNLV in the semifinals and a hardfought
victory over Kansas in the title contest.
Christian Laettner took MVP honors with 28 points
against the Runnin’ Rebels and shot a perfect 12-for-12
from the free throw line against the Jayhawks. Point
guard Bobby Hurley played nearly flawless basketball.
He was on the floor the entire 80 minutes with 16 assists
and just six turnovers in directing the offense. Reserve
guard Billy McCaffrey joined Hurley and Laettner on the
All-Final Four team with 16 points in the title game.
The Blue Devils finished the year 32-7 overall and
ranked No. 6 in the final AP poll. Duke won the ACC
regular season crown and had 10 wins over ranked opponents,
including two wins over North Carolina when
the Tar Heels were ranked in the top 5 of the AP poll.
10th Anniversary of the 2001 NCAA Championship
Duke earned its third national championship in an
11-season span by defeating ACC foe Maryland and
preseason No. 1 Arizona in the 2001 Final Four in
Minneapolis. Mike Krzyzewski became just the fourth
coach in history to win three or more national championships,
joining legends John Wooden (10), Adolph Rupp
(four) and Bob Knight (three) as three-time NCAA title
coaches.
Led by the Final Four Most Outstanding Player and
National Player of the Year Shane Battier, the Blue
Devils rolled through the NCAA Tournament, becoming
only the second team since the field was expanded to
64 or 65 teams to win every tournament game by 10 or
more points. Mike Dunleavy exploded for 21 points in
the championship game and Jason Williams averaged
more than 25 points in Duke’s six NCAA games. Carlos
Boozer returned from a late season injury to add an
inside presence during the NCAA Tournament run.
Duke closed the year ranked No. 1 in the AP poll with
a 35-4 record overall and 13-3 mark in the ACC. The
Blue Devils won 13 games over ranked opponents and
set several team records along the way.
