2.7 Recreation and Open Space<br />

2.7.1 Study <strong>of</strong> Open Space Networks, <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> Geelong, 2001<br />

This comprehensive study provides a framework for the future coordination,<br />

development and management <strong>of</strong> open space in and around the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong><br />

Geelong. Geographically and socially the <strong>City</strong> is viewed in three broad areas, one being<br />

Central, which includes Corio and Norlane.<br />

The study finds deficiencies in the central areas <strong>of</strong> Norlane, Corio, Bell Park, North<br />

Geelong, Geelong itself, South Geelong and on into parts <strong>of</strong> Belmont and Highton. In<br />

these areas there is <strong>of</strong>ten a lack <strong>of</strong> significant open space areas and linkages to open<br />

space.<br />

2.7.2 Walking More: Walking Safely, <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> Geelong, May 2004<br />

The ‘Walking More Walking Safely’ study was commissioned by the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong><br />

Geelong and partly funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria (SRV) through the Planning<br />

Community Facilities Funding 2002-03, to review current walking trends and patterns. A<br />

key aim <strong>of</strong> this study was to guide how the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> Geelong is responding to<br />

changing leisure patterns and in particular enhancing the provision <strong>of</strong> passive recreation<br />

options for residents.<br />

2.7.3 <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> Geelong Cycle Strategy 2008<br />

The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> Geelong Cycle Strategy has been developed to provide Council with<br />

guidance on expanding Geelong’s regional on and <strong>of</strong>f road cycle network, improving<br />

bicycle facilities, enhancing cyclist education and delivering promotions that encourage<br />

people to cycle as a means <strong>of</strong> transport, recreation and sport.<br />
