Assumed Competencies Include:
Admission/discharge of patient commensurate with level of practice
Vital signs monitoring – baseline T,P,R,B/P, O2 saturations,
Appropriate checking of medications and drug calculations
Use of IMED pumps, syringe driver sets and appropriate care of patients receiving IVT
Pre & Post Operative Care – Baseline level – RPAO’s, wound and pain assessment
Documentation – T.P.R., F.B.C., Care Plans, Progress Notes.
Making appropriate referrals to organisational and community services.
Glucometer – measurements and care of equipment
Basic C.P.R and use of “heart stream” monitor.
No Lift techniques and use of associated equipment, slides & sheets.
Collection of basic pathology samples –MSU, CSU, sputum , stools & wound swabs
Oxygen therapy, administration of and care of patient receiving oxygen, including humidified oxygen
Performing 12 lead E.C.G. and to recognise BASIC arrhythmias
Completion of RCS assessment and classification paperwork (residential care)
Phlebotomy – venipuncture and collection of blood and blood culture samples for pathology
Safe management of blood and blood product infusions.
Managing patients with chest drains and UWSD
Naso-gastric tube insertion and care of patient – includes PEG feeds
Health promotion
Simple Wound dressings / sterile technique
Triage of Emergency presentations & first line emergency management
Peripheral IV cannulation.
Preceptorship
Advanced Life Support incl. semi-automatic defibrillation & airway management
Cardiac Monitors and telemetry – patient set up and monitoring of
Management of Epidural catheters and pain in labour (midwives only)
Management of implantable venous access devices i.e. Hickman’s/PICC lines
Safe management of cytotoxic materials and waste
Ventilatory support – use of BiPAP/CPAP
Active and Passive Range of Motion Exercises
Administering Eye Drops or Ointment
Administering Intravenous Medications (bolus)
Administering Intravenous Medications (burette)
