KEY RESPONSIBILITIES<br />

<strong>Nursing</strong> Supervisor (After Hours)<br />

DESCRIPTION<br />

Proficiency and/or working toward those skills/assumed competencies required to<br />

address all phases of the nursing process as listed in Appendix A;<br />

Maintains own level of clinical skill necessary to support staff in their clinical duties as<br />

necessary and to effectively manage emergency situations after-hours<br />

Consistently applies and regularly practises GSHS emergency, safety and hazard<br />

control procedures and ensures staff compliance with mandatory training in these areas<br />

Ensures compliance with Infection control guidelines as per GSHS policy;<br />

Promotes reflective nursing practice within the team;<br />

Leads staff in exercising efficiency and sound judgement in decision making and when<br />

identifying situations requiring assistance from others<br />

Effectively manages and supervises nursing team members in all phases of the care<br />

process in liaison with NUM<br />

Demonstrates proficient middle and senior management skills particularly in:<br />

– staff education,<br />

– performance appraisal<br />

– conflict/grievance resolution<br />

– continuous quality improvement<br />

– clinical risk management<br />

Monitors after-hours activities in all clinical areas on the designated campus<br />

Computer skills particularly in ‘Word’ and ‘Excel’ program, use of ‘Outlook Express’<br />

and internet health links.<br />

In liaison with Staff Development and NUM, is responsible for the effective<br />

orientation of new personnel to the clinical area incl. promoting Unit Philosophy and<br />

Objectives as shared goals<br />

Has an active role in committees and meeting forums as directed by the NUM/DON<br />

Assists in competency assessments and performance appraisals of nursing staff as<br />

delegated by the NUM<br />

Undertakes other teaching activities and involvement in on-going education sessions<br />

Assists the NUM in undertaking nursing research activities<br />

Coordinates services, manages workloads and allocates resources during after-hours<br />

periods in consultation with NUM/Campus Manager/DON.<br />
