1980 Regular Season Champions<br />

In John Rennie’s second year at the helm of the <strong>Duke</strong> soccer program,<br />

he led the Blue Devils to their fi rst ACC Championship. <strong>Duke</strong> achieved<br />

their highest ever ranking of 11th and fi nished the season with a 15-4-3<br />

record. They went undefeated in conference games with a mark of 4-0-2<br />

to take the championship. Sean McCoy led the way with nine goals and<br />

six assists. Boris Ilicic recorded 109 saves and only allowed <strong>18</strong> goals in<br />

22 contests with nine shutouts.<br />

1999 Regular Season and ACC Tournament Champions<br />

The Blue Devils earned their fi rst ACC Tournament Championship in<br />

1999. <strong>Duke</strong> went through the season undefeated before losing to Santa<br />

Clara in the NCAA Tournament. The team fi nished 16-1-3 and 4-0-2 in<br />

the ACC. The Blue Devils began the ACC Tournament against arch-rival<br />

North Carolina and after a scoreless fi rst half, Troy Garner scored twice<br />

within a three-minute span to break the game open. Twenty minutes<br />

later, Donald McIntosh connected on two goals in a three-minute span<br />

to seal the 4-0 victory. The Blue Devils squared off against seven-time<br />

tournament champion Virginia in the fi nals. Ali Curtis gave <strong>Duke</strong> a 1-0<br />

lead with a goal eight minutes into the game. The Cavaliers came back<br />

to tie the score just after halftime in the 47th minute. The match went<br />

scoreless for the next 81 minutes before Stephen Pate found the back of<br />

the net in the third overtime to give the Blue Devils the title.<br />

Joe Ulrich became the fi rst of six <strong>Duke</strong> players to earn National Player of<br />

the Year honors when he led the Blue Devils to the school’s fi rst national<br />

championship appearance. <strong>Duke</strong> set a school record with a 24-game<br />

unbeaten streak before losing to Indiana in the National Championship<br />

game, 2-1 in eight overtimes. The Blue Devils ended with a 22-1-2 record<br />

and were 4-0-2 in the ACC. Tom Kain had an outstanding freshman<br />

season with 13 goals and 20 assists for 46 points while Bob Jenkins tallied<br />

16 goals. Pat Johnston recorded 12 shutouts, allowing just <strong>18</strong> goals<br />

and stopping 124 shots.<br />

2005 ACC Tournament Champions<br />

The 2005 ACC Tournament was fi lled with excitement for the Blue<br />

Devils. The fi fth-seed in the tournament, <strong>Duke</strong> started with a 2-0 victory<br />

over 10th-ranked Virginia Tech. Chase Perfect came into the contest<br />

having only played 30 minutes on the season, but gave the Blue Devils<br />

a 1-0 lead with his fi rst goal of the season off a corner kick. Zach Pope<br />

later tallied an empty net goal. <strong>Duke</strong> faced No. 1 Maryland in the semifi<br />

nals and came out strong at the start. Blake Camp scored two goals<br />

in the fi rst 15 minutes and Pope made it 3-0 with a goal three minutes<br />

into the second half. Maryland stormed back in the fi nal 10 minutes with<br />

two goals but Spencer Wadsworth put the fi nishing touches on the Blue<br />

Devil’s 4-2 victory. <strong>Duke</strong> faced No. 4 North Carolina in the fi nals and for<br />

the second time in the season the two played through two overtimes with<br />

a scoreless tie. The championship came down to penalty kicks. The Blue<br />

Devils trailed 4-3 and faced a loss but Justin Papadakis made a key<br />

save and Camp evened the shootout at 4-4. In the extra round of kicks,<br />

Papadakis made another save and freshman Mike Grella converted his<br />

kick to give the Blue Devils the 5-4 shootout victory.<br />
