The L<strong>at</strong>in American and the Caribbean Region faces two increasingly stark trends: rapid urbaniz<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />
frequent n<strong>at</strong>ural disasters. Combined, they substantially increase the intensive risk <strong>of</strong> disasters to which<br />
thousands <strong>of</strong> people are exposed.<br />
<strong>Preventive</strong> <strong>Resettlement</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Popul<strong>at</strong>ions</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Risk</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Disaster</strong>: Experiences from L<strong>at</strong>in America presents case<br />
studies from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Gu<strong>at</strong>emala th<strong>at</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer an overview <strong>of</strong> the countries’ main<br />
hazards and their disaster risk-management systems. Also, they illustr<strong>at</strong>e how preventive resettlement has<br />
been incorpor<strong>at</strong>ed as a disaster risk-reduction measure, and describe resettlement altern<strong>at</strong>ives, institutional<br />
arrangements, sources <strong>of</strong> financing and recovery and control <strong>of</strong> reclaimed areas.<br />
These experiences provide important lessons for future interventions and can help other countries currently<br />
developing risk reduction str<strong>at</strong>egies.<br />
