historic buildings of George. Start at the top of York Street where a number
of old buildings have survived the onslaught of development. Then move
on to Pacaltsdorp where you will find some more charming treasures.
The lovely St Mark’s Anglican Cathedral, situated on the corner of York and Cathedral Street, was
designed by Sopie Gray. It was consecrated in 1850.
building with classical gables, completed in
1948.
features steam locomotives and their part
in the history of Transnet. Enter the world
of the South African Railway history and
ruled the railway lines of South Africa.
Many paintings, poetry, photographs and
other rail-related items are also on display.
An excellent selection of privately owned
vintage cars can be seen inside.Other
exhibitions of interest are silverware,
cutlery and crockery from various periods
of the transport industry. There are also
fire engines, road transport vehicles,
antique furniture and photographs to be
The history of the wood industry features
prominently at the George Museum
situated on the corners of York Street and
Courtenay Street. The George Beacon
displayed in the foyer has the dated 1785
engraved. It is an indication of when the
first trekboers and other pioneer settlers
moved into the area. The beacon serves
as part of the George Museum permanent
exhibition.
is nie. Die kusstook bied uitgestrekte
sandstrande, rotse wat wemel van die
seelewe en riviermondings wat baie van die
vis as broeikaste aanwend.
So verskillend as wat die kusstrook is, moet
1
2
hengel & bote
naghengel.
Glentanastrand, Leentjiesklip, Wildernis en
die Gonnas is van die gewildste
nag-hengelplekke in die George-omgewing.
Sommige gesoute hengelaars verkies weer
die riviermondings van Groot-Brakrivier,
Maalgate, Kaaimans- en die Touwrivier by
Wildernis. Maar hierdie mondings is nie
deurgaans oop nie.
Die rots-hengelplekke wat ook gewild is,
maar moeiliker bereikbaar is, is Victoriabaai,
Groot- en Klein Voëlklip asook Dollieskraal by
Hierdie
inligting kan by Capenature se kantore op
George bekom word.
Verdere navrae oor hengelplekke en
aassoorte kan by enige hengelwinkel in die
streek bekom word. Die kusgebied bied ook
‘n wye verskeidenheid aassoorte wat of by
hengelwinkels gekoop of self ingesamel kan
word. Die beperkings in hierdie geval kan ook
by CapeNature bekom word.
terug. Dit verseker die volhoubaarheid
van die sport.
Dit is taboe om haaie
op die strand te los
nadat dit gevang is.
Plaas hulle weer
terug in die see.
Skiboot eienaars kan hul vaartuie by
Mosselbaai se munisipale helling,
Buffelsbaai of by Knysna se Diepsee
Hengelklub helling te water laat.
Laasgenoemde twee skeepshellings
behoort aan klubs en 'n gebruikersfooi
is derhalwe betaalbaar. Geen fooi is
betaalbaar vir die gebruik van die
munisipale helling by Mosselbaai nie.
Die helling by Kaaimans is slegs vir
lede van die George Diepsee Hengelklub
se gebruik. Kaaimans word as 'n
baie gevaarlike riviermonding beskou,
en streng regulasies is van toepassing.
Bote mag onder meer glad nie hul
enjins gebruik voordat hulle nie reeds
byna by die see is nie.
Kontak Mauritz Lammers van die
George Diepsee Hengelklub by (w)
044 871 2191 vir meer inligting. Bote
in 'n ten volle werkende toestand is,
batterye moet nagegaan word en dit is
selfs raadsaam om 'n addisionele
battery saam te neem.
Die brandstof moet genoeg wees om
die rit te onderneem, goedgekeurde
veiligheidsbaadjies moet vir elke
bemanningslid beskikbaar wees en
noodfakkels moet ook aan boord
wees.
word.
sandstrande gevang.
