Galati Joins 20-Win Club: Olivia Galati tied a school
record with 26 wins in 2010 before obliterating the mark
with 29 wins in her sophomore year. Previously, Galati tied
Stacy Jackson and Jen Smith for the most single-season
wins before claiming sole possession of the record coming
off a 29-8 season.
Galati and Wade Win 12 Straight: Erin Wade (Taunton,
Mass.) picked up two wins in the CAA Tournament in
2010 to extend her winning streak to last 12 decisions,
tying for the fourth best in school history. Olivia Galati
matched her teammate last season, winning 12 straight
games from March 11-April 9 against George Mason.
During that streak, Galati defeated Michigan State, Purdue,
Buffalo, Connecticut (twice), Drexel (twice), Rutgers,
Delaware (twice), Fordham and twice beat the Dukes.
Multitude: Rachael Senatore has been one of Hofstra's
hottest hitters. Senatore's .310 average leads the team. The
outfielder has registered multi-hit games in five of the
Pride's last 10 games. Senatore has four RBIs in that span
and her five total RBIs is tied for third behind Bigler's eight
for the team lead.
Showdown: When Hofstra faced No. 12 Michigan on Feb.
25, the game featured four players who made the NFCA's
preseason top-50 Player of the Year Watch List. Galati
opposed a Michigan lineup that included three hitters on
the prestigious list in Bree Evans, Ashley Lane and
Amanda Chidester. The trio was a combined 2-for-10 with
three strikeouts and zero runs scored.
Power Surge: Junior Becca Bigler has already exceeded
her career total for home runs by going deep four times,
including Hofstra's first two long balls of the season in the
Pirate Clash. Bigler hit a two-out home run in the bottom of
the seventh to send the season opener into extra innings
against No. 21 Louisville and delivered another seventhinning
shot against ECU. The infielder smashed her third
home run against Louisiana Lafayette, representing the
second time she went deep against a ranked opponent.
Bigler hit her last home run in Hofstra's first win of the
season against Virginia Tech and her four home runs is
already more than the three she hit in the 2010 season
(injures cut short her sophomore season in which she did
not hit a home run).
Backstop Update: Senior catcher Courtney Crews
(Stafford, Va.) has been entrusted to take over the catching
responsibilities to replace Laura Valentino, who graduated.
Crews did not commit a single error last season in 33 total
chances. Freshman Erin Trippi (Lyndhurst, NJ) will also be
looking to give the Pride depth.
Crews was Hofstra’s leading hitter through the first eight
games and has started all 17 games for the Pride (one of
just four players to do that).
Home, Sweet Home: The Pride was 20-2 at home last
year, coming off a 2010 season in which it went 19-3.
Since Hofstra Softball Stadium opened in 1999, the Pride is
a combined 251-48 at home. That includes a 103-11 home
record all-time against CAA teams (25-6 in the CAA
Tournament). Going back to 2001 in the America East,
Hofstra is 113-11 (.911) in its last 124 home games against
league teams. Hofstra has not lost a home conference series
since 1991 (a doubleheader sweep by Drexel), going 56-0-4
in home series in that span.
Hofstra Dominant In Conference: The Pride has been
remarkably consistent in league play since joining the
America East in 1995, tallying a league record of 247-45,
including 144-27 in the CAA. Hofstra has also compiled a
58-2-3 series record in the CAA, including 51-1-3 since
losing its first CAA series to Towson in 2002 (two games
to one). The other series loss was at Delaware in 2006 (also
two games to one). The worst conference record that the
program has had since 1995 was 14-6 in 2006, which was
still good for a .700 winning percentage.
The Big 4-0: Hofstra recorded its 40th win of last season
with a 1-0 victory over Georgia State in a winner's bracket
game on the second day of the Colonial Athletic
Association Softball Championship. It marked the eighth
time in school history that the Pride has reached the 40-win
mark and the fifth time In the last season sevens. After
Hofstra finished with 45 wins in 2010 to tie the school
record set in 2008, Hofstra capped 2011 with a 40-13
ledger.
Good Company: The Pride concluded its most challenging
early season schedule in more than a decade. Hofstra has
already faced No. 21 Louisville in the season-opening
game at the Pirate Clash and opposed three more ranked
teams in a two-day span with a game against No. 17
Louisiana-Lafayette and contests versus 10th-ranked
Tennessee and the 12th-ranked Wolverines. In the team’s
finale at the Citrus Classic, Hofstra opposed No. 14 UCLA.
The last time Hofstra played four ranked teams in such a
short span was in 2000 when it opened up against four
straight top-20 opponents, including No. 1 UCLA.
