Another Banner Season: Hofstra earned the regular
season CAA championship with a 19-1 conference record
in 2011, marking the 20th straight season that the Pride has
won either a regular season or a postseason conference title,
dating back to an East Coast Conference Tournament title
in 1992 (the ECC doesn't even exist anymore). That
campaign followed a 2010 season in which Hofstra went
18-2 against the league in winning the regular season and
tournament title. The only time Hofstra has not won the
CAA regular season title was in 2006, when it won the
postseason championship at top-seeded Georgia State. A
Making History: Hofstra won the 2008 Colonial Athletic
Association championship with a 3-0 win over James
Madison in the title game, marking its 11th conference title
in a row, before seeing the streak end in 2009. Hofstra won
the first seven CAA titles after the league was founded in
2002, and also won the final four America East Conference
championships it participated in from 1998-2001. No
Division I school had ever won 10 straight conference titles
prior to the Pride's run, which ended with a 3-1 defeat to
Georgia State in 12 innings. Massachusetts won nine in a
row in the Atlantic 10 from 1995-2003, which was the
previous record.
About Head Coach Bill Edwards:
Bill Edwards is in his 23rd season as Hofstra University’s
Head Softball Coach, and he has led the Pride to national
prominence during that time. His career record is currently
806-384-3, making him one of only 19 active coaches in
the country with 800 career wins. He was inducted into the
National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Hall of
Fame in December of 2009.
The last decade saw Edwards and the Pride achieve new
levels of success, including the 2004 campaign, when it
went on a remarkable postseason run that saw it come up
one win shy of the Women’s College World Series. Hofstra
won at least one game in the last eight NCAA Tournaments
it has played in, and has reached the regional finals four
times. Over the last seven years, the Pride has NCAA wins
over Nebraska, Creighton, Auburn, Stanford, Oklahoma
State, Arizona State, Southern Illinois and Penn State.
The Hofstra Softball program has also displayed consistent
excellence over the last 20 years. Edwards and company
have garnered 12 NCAA Tournament appearances (1993,
1995, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007,
2008, 2010), two East Coast Conference Championships
(1992 and 1994), five America East Championships (1995,
1998, 1999, 2000, 2001), eight CAA Championships (2002,
2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010) and an ECAC
Championship (1993). In each of the last 20 years under
Edwards, the Pride has won either a regular season or a
postseason conference title, including a streak of 11 straight
tournament championships from 1998-2008, something no
team in NCAA Division I history had previously
accomplished. The previous long was nine straight
conference titles, which UMass accomplished in the
Atlantic 10 from 1995-2003.
Edwards, who has never had a losing season during his
Hofstra tenure, also coached the Pride to a #21 ranking in
the final 2004 NCAA Division I Softball Poll, and a #20
ranking in the final 1994 poll. In addition, he has led the
Pride to #1 rankings in the Northeast Region Poll in 1993,
1994, 1997 and 2000.
Edwards has also been named the Regional Coach of the
Year 10 times in his career (1993, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003,
2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2011), including six of the last
eight years and has been named the CAA Coach of the year
in each of the last four years.
Prior to coming to Hofstra, Edwards coached softball for
nine years at Commack High School on Long Island.
During his tenure at Commack, his teams reached the
Suffolk County Class A tournament seven times.
Edwards and his wife, Janie, have two daughters, Shari,
who played NCAA Division I softball at Northern Illinois
University and coached at Hofstra, and Karen, a licensed
practical nurse. Edwards received a bachelor’s in physical
education from Northern Michigan in 1967 and a master’s
from Stony Brook in 1975.
