From the bewitched garden
One of the most traditional
herb garden plants is lavender,
which makes a sweetsmelling
border along pathways.
The soil need not be
very fertile but must drain
well. Originally lavender
grew wild in Mediterranean
Europe. Lavender from the
Latin "lavara" - to wash, was
the flower used to perfume
water for washing. All parts
of lavender are fragrant,
but oils are made from the
flowers. A few drops of lavender
essence in a hot bath
will banish fatigue. The
dried buds'are used in potpourris
and sachets to keep
clothes closets fresh smelling.

Subtlety in ikat

During the month of May,
Snapdragon Crafts Co-op,
791 Bank Street, featured
garments designed and handwoven
by Ellen Good. Good
uses the ikat technique to
create a subtle pattern on
her clasically simple clothing.
Ikat is a dye technique
in which the warp yarn is
cut to various lengths,
tightly bound in selected
areas and then dyed. Resisting
the dye, the bound areas
remain their original
natural colour. When the
warp is threaded on the loom
and woven the ikat-dyed
yarn produces a pattern.
Good uses silk, cotton
and linen and favours
natural browns, beiges,
peach, raspberry pink and
rust shades. The addition
of creamy white makes the
clothing look as appealing
as strawberries with cream.
She frequently weaves a
tweedy combination of cotton
and linen that is very pleasantly
tactile. The T-shaped
blouses frequently have an
ikat design resembling
Northern Lights. An especially
attractive garment is her
pink kimono jacket made of
tussah silk and ikat dyed.
The two-piece silk dresses
would suit most occasions
from work to a wedding.
Good has been a full time
studio weaver since 1981.
Born in Pittsburgh, she now
lives and works in Ompah,
Ontario about 80 miles
north-west of Ottawa. She
completed her BFA in textile
design with honours at the
Rochester Institute of
Technology, Rochester, New
York in May, 1980, and received
her Senior Diploma
from the Weaving Workshop,
Banff Centre, Banff, Alberta
along with the Watchorn
Scholarship for the fall and
winter terms 1977-78. She has
exhibited extensively in
Canada and northern New York.
