Japan Marine Science and Technology Center Outline of Activities Overview To promote ocean development in our country, Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC) continued to carry out a variety of activities during FY (ending March , ) in close cooperation with domestic and foreign organizations concerned. These activities included research and development efforts, education and training services, information services, and construction, improvement and shared use of facilities and equipment. Details of these activities are described below. 1. Research and development activities JAMSTEC carries out its R&D activities under categories of Research Project; Category , Research Project; Category or Personal Research depending on the objective, content and progress status of these activities. JAM- STEC has established a flexible R&D system under which to conduct research according to the plan drawn up at the beginning of each fiscal year, that enables creative research based on researcher's own initiatives or adjustment to the situation change. In addition, JAMSTEC carries out Commissioned Research and Cooperative Research at the request from, and with the cooperation of, other domestic and foreign organizations. The R&D activities that JAMSTEC carried out for FY are summarized below: () Research Project; Category JAMSTEC carries out important, large-scale or comprehensive R&D projects as Research Project; Category to make contributions to the economic and social development and the improvement of marine science and technology. In FY, JAMSTEC carried out Research Project; Category as listed in Table . () Research Project; Category As Research Project; Category , JAMSTEC carries out R&D projects to further develop the basic results obtained from Personal Research and other researches that may possibly develop into future Research Project; Category . In FY, JAMSTEC carried out Research Project; Category as listed in Table . () Personal Research As Personal Research, JAMSTEC carries out research projects based upon individual researchers' spontaneous conceptions to maximize their abilities, or those that might develop into Research Project; Category or Researches Project; Category in the future. In FY, JAMSTEC carried out Personal Research as listed in Table . () Commissioned Research and Cooperative Research As Commissioned Research, JAMSTEC carries out research projects involving marine science and technology, which are commissioned by other organizations to JAMSTEC and whose implementation JAMSTEC considers will benefit its own interests. In FY, JAMSTEC carried out commissioned Research as listed in Table . As Cooperative Research, JAMSTEC carries out research projects in which high-level results are likely to come, while reduction in costs and required time is expected by sharing R&D resources with other organizations. In FY, JAMSTEC carried out Cooperative Research as listed in Table . 2. Education and Training Activities JAMSTEC provides education and training to disseminate the results of its R&D efforts widely to the world, and contribute to the human resources development essential to advance marine science and technology in Japan. In fiscal JAMSTEC conducted training in diving skills and diving operations management, the Science Camp for high school students, the Marine Science School for elementary, secondary and high school students, university students and high school teachers with the support of the Japan Foundation, and the Asia-Western Pacific Ocean Research Network program for invited researchers and 3

Activity Related to Information Services JAMSTEC continued to collect the indispensable marine science and technology literature (e.g., books, journals, conference publications, and technical reports) published world wide, and published a broad range of reports on its research achievements for dissemination both in Japan and overseas. JAMSTEC also distributed its own publication Blue Earth to major libraries throughout Japan, and to the public on a paid subscription basis, and created the Hyper Ocean-Earth Encyclopedia web site to foster a greater interest in and understanding of marine and earth science among young people. In addition, JAMSTEC continued expanding its ocean database, and operating its supercomputer systems. 4. Operation of the JAMSTEC Fleet JAMSTEC owns and operates the following vessels to undertake the programs and services mentioned above– ,m research submersible system (manned research submersible SHINKAI , support vessel NATSUSHIMA, and land servicing site), ,m class ROV DOLPHIN-K, ,m class Deep Sea ROV KAIKO, ,m class ROV HYPER-DOLPHIN, research vessel KAIYO, ,m research submersible system (manned research submersible SHINKAI , support vessel YOKOSUKA, and land servicing site), deep sea research vessel KAIREI, and oceanographic research vessel MIRAI. The operations of these vessels in fiscal are outlined below. In fiscal the manned research submersible SHINKAI ceased operations, and the ,m class ROV DOLPHIN-K completed its operations. () NATSUSHIMA In fiscal NATSUSHIMA was at sea for a total of days providing operational support for SHINKAI , DOLPHIN-K, HYPER-DOLPHIN and UROV-K. () KAIYO In fiscal KAIYO was at sea for a total of days providing operational support for HYPER- DOLPHIN, and conducting various surveys and deepsea towing missions. () YOKOSUKA In fiscal YOKOSUKA was at sea for a total of days providing operational support for SHINKAI , and also conducting independent research. () KAIREI In fiscal KAIREI was at sea for a total of days providing operational support for KAIKO, and also conducting independent research and surveys on the subsurface structure. () MIRAI Continuing on from fiscal , MIRAI completed five joint-use missions in fiscal , and was at sea for a total of days. () SHINKAI SHINKAI completed dives around the Nansei Islands, Suruga Bay, Sagami Bay, Nankai Trough, and Izu-Ogasawara. () SHINKAI SHINKAI completed dives around the Chishima Trench, Nankai Trough, Sagami Bay, Suruga Bay, Nansei Islands, Hawaii Islands, and Java- Sunda Trench. () DOLPHIN-K DOLPHIN-K completed a total of dives for preliminary site surveys for SHINKAI , and for research in Kagoshima Bay. () HYPER-DOLPHIN HYPER-DOLPHIN completed dives in offshore Sanriku, Sagami Bay, offshore Tokachi, Nansei Islands, and Suruga Bay. () KAIKO KAIKO completed a total of dives in the sea areas around Japan, including the Northwest Pacific Ocean, offshore Kushiro-Tokachi, Japan Trench, and Nankai Trough, and in the Mariana Trench and in the sea area to the west of the Philippines. 4
