(Ocean Bottom Seismometer) deployment (Nankai
Trough) one mission for eight days; DEEP TOW
operations (Mariana sea area) one mission for
days; heat flow measurement and piston core (Sagami
Bay, Nankai Trough) one mission for days; and
multichannel seismic reflection tests (Suruga Bay)
one mission for days. On May , KAIYO
was open to the general public and took some visitors
on a short cruise around Yokosuka Port as a part of the
JAMSTEC open day at Yokosuka Headquarters.
From May to June , KAIYO underwent
a statutory routine inspection at the Yura Works of
Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. during
which checks and maintenance were carried out on the
various systems and equipment.
() YOKOSUKA
YOKOSUKA undertook missions and was at sea
for a total of days. Figure shows the operational
areas. A breakdown of YOKOSUKA missions are:
SHINKAI operations five missions for a total
of days; URASHIMA sea trials (Suruga Bay)
two mission for a total of days; UROV-K operations
(Izu-Ogasawara) one mission for days; and
independent YOKOSUKA operations three missions
for a total of days.
Independent research operations consisted of:
Monitoring the dynamics of Japanese coastal currents
and elucidating the mechanisms of change (Nansei
Islands and the continental slope of the East China
Sea) one mission for days; Submarine earthquake
observation in the French Polynesia region
(French Polynesia sea area) one mission for
days; and Quasi-normals of meteorological elements
(Okino Torishima) one mission for days.
From April to May , YOKOSUKA underwent
a statutory routine inspection at the Kobe
Shipyard and Machinery Works of Kawasaki Heavy
Industries, Ltd. during which checks and maintenance
were carried out on the various systems and equipment.
