public during port visits to Okinawa (July ),
Takamatsu (August and ), Sasebo (November

From December , to February , NAT-
SUSHIMA underwent a statutory routine inspection at
the Kobe Shipyard and Machinery Works of Kawasaki
Heavy Industries, Ltd. Checks and maintenance were
carried out on the various systems and equipment, and
with the suspension of operations by SHINKAI
and DOLPHIN-K, equipment and fittings for DOL-
PHIN-K were removed, while the equipment
required to mount and operate HYPER-DOLPHIN
was fitted. In addition, the second and third laboratories
were modified (second laboratory was modified
into a dry laboratory, and the functions of the laboratory
benches in the third laboratory were upgraded),
the container laboratory (wet laboratory) modified for
NATSUSHIMA was mounted, a rock sample cutting
room was established, and container space was set up
on the port side of the boat deck. A shipboard LAN
was also installed (see Figure).
() KAIYO
KAIYO undertook missions and was at sea for a
total of days. Figure shows the operational
areas. A breakdown of KAIYO missions are: HYPER-
DOLPHIN operations four missions for a total of
days; MCS/OBS surveys (offshore Tottori, Nankai
Trough, Mariana sea area) two missions for a total
of days; Observational studies on primary productivity
(Nansei Islands) one mission for days;
Tropical Ocean Climate Study (TOCS; western equatorial
Pacific Ocean) one mission for days; OBS
