days. The symposium featured a special lecture by
JAMSTEC Executive Director Dr. Susumu Honjo, and
various presentations by researchers.
JAMSTEC participated in the International Ship
Operators Meeting (ISOM) in Finland's capital
Helsinki, and the International Submersible Safety
Symposium held in Harbor Branch, USA, where a
great deal was learned about safety and management
conditions in other countries that will be of considerable
benefit to the safe operation of JAMSTEC's fleet
of research vessels.
As a part of technical exchanges on submersible
operations between JAMSTEC and IFREMER, the
two organizations implemented a submersible operator
exchange program involving two SHINKAI
operators and two operators from the NAUTILE.
Unfortunately, because of a tanker accident off the
coast of Spain, JAMSTEC's submersible operators
were not able to participate in a dive by NAUTILE,
however, one of the French operators was able to
take part in a dive by SHINKAI offshore of
Hatsushima Island as an observer.
6. Ship operations
JAMSTEC carries out deep-sea research and ocean
observation using the five research vessels of NAT-
SUSHIMA, KAIYO, YOKOSUKA, KAIREI, and
MIRAI, and the deep-sea research systems of
SHINKAI , SHINKAI , DOLPHIN-K,
HYPER-DOLPHIN, KAIKO, and DEEP TOW. These
vessels and systems also took part in open days at various
ports of call and other public relations activities.

NATSUSHIMA undertook missions and was at
