(Fig. ) () Training Program for Asia-Western Pacific Ocean Research Network JAMSTEC has held a training program from FY for establishing an oceanographic observation network in the Asia and Western Equatorial Regions with the financial assistance of the Nippon Foundation. This program is an initiative to share the knowledge on the past and current ENSO events as well as data on the ocean and atmosphere among participating countries, and enable them to predict such events and implement the necessary countermeasures. In FY, the workshop was held from October to December , ( weeks) at Yokosuka Headquarters, MIO and the Global Oceanographic Data Center (GODAC) in Nago, Okinawa. Six scientists and engineers attended from Solomon Islands, Samoa, Nauru, Micronesia, Vanuatu, and Tuvalu. The training workshop focused on the technologies for oceanic and atmospheric observations, especially on maintaining TRITON buoy system (oceanographic observation buoys deployed in the tropical regions by JAMSTEC). Japan Marine Science and Technology Center Research Support Activities Research Support Department The Research Support Department provides support for surveys and R&D carried out by JAMSTEC through the operation and maintenance of JAMSTEC's fleet of vessels, submersibles and ROVs, and the shared use of research facilities. 1. MIRAI public invitation system JAMSTEC invites applications for research using MIRAI based on the Long-term Observation and Research Plan for Utilizing the Oceanographic Research Vessel MIRAI, and successful research applications are screened and selected by the MIRAI Operation Planning Committee. The application period for operations during fiscal was from June to July , , and applications could be submitted by post or over the internet. A total of applications covering research themes were received, and from these, the MIRAI Operation Planning Committee selected applications covering themes. 2. Deep-sea research application system JAMSTEC invites applications for deep-sea research themes in line with JAMSTEC's long-term research plans, and applications are screened and selected by the Deep-sea Research Planning Committee, Deep-sea Research Planning and Coordination Subcommittee, and the Deep-sea Research Promotion Committee. The application period for deep-sea research in fiscal was from September to October , , and applications had to be submitted over the internet. Operations open to public applications were diving missions by the manned research submersible SHINKAI , four missions by the ROV KAIKO, independent missions by deep-sea research vessel KAIREI (excluding an MCS mission of days), and the support vessel NATSUSHIMA (total of days HYPER-DOL- PHIN or DEEP TOW). Applications were submitted by researchers proposing research themes and researchers proposing joint research covering a total of research themes, and from these, the Deep-sea Research Promotion Committee selected themes. 3. Research support Technicians from Nippon Marine Enterprises, Ltd., Marine Works Japan Ltd., and Global Ocean Development Inc. provide a range of onboard and onshore research support (e.g., operation of observation equipment and systems, deep-sea survey support, and data processing). In fiscal the observation network of TRITON buoys in the western Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and low-latitude sea areas was completed. Observation data is transmitted to Mutsu Institute for Oceanography through ARGOS satellite, and made available to the public on JAMSTEC's website. In seafloor seismic surveys, seismographs are being operated, and in fiscal the seismograph recovery rate was .% ( deployed, recovered). 4. INMARTECH 2002 The th INMARTECH (International Marine Technician Symposium) was held at the Yokosuka Headquarters over the five-day period October –, . Held every two years, this symposium was the first to be held in the Asia-Western Pacific region, and had the largest attendance to date overseas participants from countries including the U.S., Australia and South Korea, and from Japan for a total of participants. Participating countries introduced their latest technologies at the sessions, and this stimulated great interest and discussion among participants. The next survey will be held in September at Cambridge, U.K., and will be hosted by the British Antarctic Survey. 5. Blue Earth Symposium The Blue Earth Symposium (combining the th SHINKAI Symposium and the th MIRAI Symposium) was held at the Pacifico Yokohama on January and , .
