Japan <strong>Marine</strong> Science and Technology Center Computer and Information Service Computer network management (1) Computer systems (a) Supercomputer system Understanding the various ocean phenomena through mathematical analysis and forecasting change through numerical models are pivotal to gaining a clear scientific grasp of global environmental issues. This requires the power of a supercomputer. JAMSTEC began using a supercomputer the SX-/ system on March , , and replaced it with the supercomputer SC system in September . This SC system is a -node SMP server using scalar processors. Peripheral devices include hard disk units connected by fiber channels, and a tape archival system expandable to TB. The system also features a vector-type high-speed computation server to operate existing applications. The SC system has been being used in explaining various ocean phenomena and predicting change through numerical modeling, and science and technology computation and data processing in reflection seismic surveys, genome analysis, and research and development projects. (b) Shared computer systems JAMSTEC has been operating the following shared computer systems: AlphaServer with VMS operating system, AlphaServer DSE with Digital UNIX operating system for use in data transfer to the supercomputer and small-scale computation, and the SGI ONYX for image analysis and processing. (2) Networks (a) JAMSTEC network The JAMSTEC network connects the Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences and the other major centers with the necessary bandwidth for data exchange and communication. In fiscal a local area network based on FDDI was established at the Yokosuka Headquarters, and in fiscal the base was upgraded from FDDI to Gigabit Ethernet. The networks within the Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences, Mutsu Institute for Oceanography, and GODAC comprise Gigabit Ethernet base LAN and Fast Ethernet branch lines. Figure shows the network connection between JAMSTEC Headquarters and the research institutes. Mutsu Institute for Oceanography and the Tokyo Branch are connected to Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences by a Mbps wide-area LAN line. Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences is connected to Yokosuka Headquarters by a Mbps ATM line, and GODAC in Okinawa is connected by the JGN (Japan Gigabit Network). (b) Internet Since JAMSTEC first established its presence on the internet with a kbps connection in , the speed of the connection has increased with the rise in traffic. In fiscal JAMSTEC connected to SINET by a Mbps leased line. Internet connection was initially from Yokosuka Headquarters, but today it is from Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences. GODAC was connected to the internet by leased line in fiscal . The introduction of this high-speed link has enabled the effective use of image and video data, both of which require large bandwidth. (c) Security JAMSTEC installed a network firewall in fiscal , and has continued to upgrade this as required to ensure the security of all network computers.
