Outline of Activities
on research cooperation in August . Under the
memorandum, the two organizations will cooperate in
research on plate tectonics and geophysics, global
ocean circulation and climate changes, drilling and
sampling technology.
() French Research Institute for Exploitation of the
Sea (IFREMER_Institut français de recherché pour
l'exploitation de la mer)
Under the memorandum for research coopration
signed in July , JAMSTEC and IFREMER are
cooperating in research on underwater technology and
deep-sea microorganisms. Conferences were held at
JAMSTEC's Yokosuka Headquarters in June and
September . In October at a Japan-France
conference in Paris, discussions were held on submarine
technology and deep-sea observation stations, and
over the same period, a seminar on deep-sea microorganisms
was also held.
() Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine
Research (AWI)
JAMSTEC and AWI concluded a research cooperation
memorandum in , and the cooperative ties
are expected to further expand in marine research and
deep-sea microorganisms.
() Indonesian Agency for the Assessment and
Application of Technology (BPPT)
JAMSTEC has been cooperating BPPT on ocean
observation in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean under a
memorandum for research cooperation signed in .
The agreement was expanded in to a comprehensive
memorandum for research cooperation that also
included deep-sea research. In March , a conference
on research cooperation was held at JAMSTEC's
Yokosuka Headquarters.
() Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans
(DFO)
JAMSTEC and DFO signed a memorandum for
cooperation in ocean research in March . The
memorandum has facilitated discussions at symposiums
and seminars and joint observation and research
with a view to understanding the climate system in the
Arctic sea area.
() Indian National Institute of Oceanography (NIO)
In May JAMSTEC and NIO signed a memorandum
on cooperation on ocean observation research
in the Indian Ocean. Under the memorandum, they are
cooperating in the maintenance of TRITON buoys
deployed in the Indian Ocean and analysis of the data
they provide.
() Southampton Oceanography Centre (SOC)
JAMSTEC and SOC signed a memorandum on
research cooperation in March . Cooperation
extends across the fields of geophysics, physical
oceanography, chemical oceanography, marine instrumentation,
and atmospheric and oceanic simulation.
() Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute
(KORDI)
JAMSTEC and KORDI signed a memorandum on
research cooperation in September . Under the
memorandum, the two institutions will cooperate in
various research fields, including marine geology and
geophysics study of trench-arc-marginal sea systems,
ocean engineering unmanned underwater vehicle,
deep-sea biological communities, utilization of deep
sea water, and microbial diversity and isolation of
deep-sea microbes.
5. Other international cooperation
In September JAMSTEC held an international
symposium and roundtable conference to commemorate
its th anniversary. JAMSTEC invited the leaders
of world's major ocean research institutions to
discuss the future of ocean science under the theme of
Ocean science in the 21st century. The discussions at
the symposium and roundtable conference were summarized
in the Yokosuka Statement.
JAMSTEC has also cooperated in research with the
following organizations, including those with which
no research cooperation memorandum or agreement
has been concluded.
