PRIDE COACH SETH TIERNEY: Seth
Tierney became the fifth head coach in the
60-year history of the Hofstra Men's
Lacrosse program when he was hired to
the position in August, 2006. Now in his
seventh season, Tierney has led the Pride
to 57 victories, the 2008 Colonial Athletic
Association championship, the 2009 and
2011 CAA regular season titles, and berths
in the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 NCAA Championship
Tournaments.
Tierney served as an assistant coach at Hofstra from 1995
through 2000 before leaving for a similar position at his alma
mater Johns Hopkins University. During his six-year tenure as
an assistant with the Pride, Hofstra recorded six consecutive
winning seasons with a combined overall record of 61-28 and a
conference mark of 29-2, captured five league titles, received
five top 15 final national rankings, and played in four NCAA
Championship tournaments.
Tierney also coached seven All-Americans and nearly twodozen
all-conference players during his first tenure at Hofstra.
Among them was midfielder Doug Shanahan, who would
receive the inaugural Tewaaraton Trophy as College Lacrosse
Player of the Year, the Lt. Ray Enners Award as the Division I
Player of the Year, and the Lt. Donald McLaughlin Award as
the Division I Midfielder of the Year in 2001.
Last year, the Pride were 6-8 on the year including six onegoal
losses and four in overtime. Hofstra had one All-CAA first
team selection in Adrian Sorichetti, two CAA second team
picks in Mark Mullen and John Antoniades, and three All-
Rookie team selections in Mike Malave, Ryan Rielly and Tyler
Begley. In 2011, the Pride enjoyed great success, both on the
field and in the classroom. Hofstra recorded a 13-3 record,
captured the CAA regular season title and earned its school
record-breaking fourth consecutive bid to the NCAA
Championship. In addition, the Pride had four players, Jay
Card, Mike Skudin, Andrew Gvozden and John Antoniades,
earn USILA All-America honors. Card, Skudin, Antoniades, Ian
Braddish and Adam Mojica were named to the All-CAA first
team while Gvozden, Steven DeNapoli and Jamie Lincoln were
voted to the second team. Skudin, who was selected the CAA
Defensive Player of the Year, also earned USILA Scholar All-
American and CAA Men's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the
Year honors. To close out the year, Skudin, DeNapoli and
Card were named to the North-South Senior All-Star Game
with DeNapoli leading all goal scorers in the contest with three.
In 2010, the Pride made its school record-tying third
consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships and finished the
year with a 9-5 record. Hofstra had two players named to the
USILA All-America team, five named to the All-CAA team and
two more named to the CAA All-Rookie Team. In 2009,
Tierney directed the Pride to an 11-4 overall, a 6-0 mark during
the CAA regular season and his second NCAA Championship
bid. Five Hofstra players were named to the All-CAA Teams,
including first team selection Jay Card, who was voted the
CAA Player of the Year. In addition, four Pride players were
named to the USILA All-America team and one was voted to
the USILA Scholar-Athlete All-America Team. For his efforts,
Tierney was named the CAA co-Coach of the Year.
The 2008 season saw Hofstra make a return to the NCAA
Tournament after a one-year hiatus. The team posted a 10-6
record and won the CAA title in a thrilling overtime win over
Drexel. Leading scorer Anthony Muscarella was named an
honorable mention All-American, while Kevin Unterstein was
the CAA Defensive Player of the Year and Jay Card earned
CAA Rookie of the Year accolades. In addition, seven players
received All-CAA honors and the Unterstein brothers, Kevin
and Michael, were named North-South Game All-Stars and
were both selected in the Major League Lacrosse Draft.
In his first year at the helm of the Hofstra program, Tierney
took over a team that returned one starter from 2006’s NCAA
Quarterfinal squad and led them to a 6-8 record that saw
seven losses decided by one goal. The team qualified for the
CAA Championship, saw one of its star players – Kevin
Unterstein – earn honorable mention All-America honors and
had seven players named to All-CAA teams, including three
All-Rookie selections.
Tierney returned to Hofstra after a six-year tenure at John
Hopkins, with the final two seasons as associate head coach.
As the Blue Jays offensive coordinator, he was the architect of
one of the most potent and explosive offenses in the nation in
recent years. Tierney directed the Blue Jays attack that
finished second in the nation in scoring margin, sixth in scoring
offense and 16th in man-up offense during Hopkins' NCAA title
run in 2005. The Blue Jays led the nation in scoring offense
and man-up offense in 2003 and finished fifth in both
categories in 2004.
THE LAST HOFSTRA-HARVARD GAME – MARCH 3 AT #15
HARVARD: Freshman long-stick middie Ryan Rielly's first
college goal with 6:52 to play in the fourth quarter snapped a 6-
6 tie and gave the Hofstra Pride a 7-6 victory over the 15thranked
Harvard Crimson at Soldiers Field.
Braddish and Adrian Sorichetti each added a goal and an
assist to lead the Pride. Sophomores Steve DiGiovanni and
Lance Yapor also added goals for Hofstra. Senior Andrew
Gvozden recorded 13 saves in the Pride goal for his second
win of the season.
Harvard was led by senior Jeff Cohen, who tallied three goals
and one assist. Kevin Vaughan, freshman Sean Mahon and
Eric Slingerland also tallied goals for the Crimson. Junior Harry
Krieger stopped 10 shots in the Harvard cage.
Rielly, a native of East Northport, New York, took a pass from
classmate Steve Romano near midfield, went down the middle
and fired a bullet past Harvard goalie Harry Krieger for the
game-winner. The goal came just 42 seconds after the
Crimson tied the game on a similar fast-break off a turnover
that led to an Eric Slingerland goal with 7:34 to play.
"I am so happy for our guys getting this win today," Pride
Coach Seth Tierney commented. "To come up here and get a
win against a very good Harvard team is special. We worked
hard as a team. Our first three goals were by a freshman and a
sophomore and another freshman (Rielly) scored the gamewinner.
So we are growing up a bit but we have more work to
do to get ready for Notre Dame next week."
The Pride scored the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0
advantage 8:10 into the contest. Freshman Tyler Begley
opened the scoring 2:56 into the contest, scooping up a loose
ball near the crease and beating Krieger for the first goal of his
college career. Begley would make it 2-0 almost five minutes
later, taking a short drop off pass from Braddish and scoring
from eight yards. Just 48 seconds later, DiGiovanni scored on
a runner down the right alley for a 3-0 lead. It was his second
goal of the year.
Harvard got on the board with 1:24 to play in the quarter as
Mahon took a pass from Keegan Michel and fired a high laser
from the left side. But the Pride erased that goal just six
seconds into the second quarter when John Antoniades won
the face-off, fed senior Mike DeNapoli, who passed to Yapor
for his ninth goal of the year and a 4-1 lead.
But Cohen scored back-to-back goals 2:06 apart to bring the
Crimson back to within one at 4-3 with 7:34 to play in the half.
Hofstra's Adrian Sorichetti scored his seventh goal of the year
with 1:42 to play in the quarter only to see Cohen get the hattrick
for Harvard, on a pass from behind the cage from Carl
Zimmerman, with just four seconds remaining in the half to
close the gap to 5-4.
Harvard tied the game just 2:14 into the third quarter as
Vaughan scored coming from behind the goal. But the Pride
regained the lead four minutes later when Braddish took a
pass from Sorichetti in the middle of the box and fired a high
bullet past Krieger for a 6-5 lead. The Crimson tied the game at
6-6 on Slingerland's fast-break goal with 7:34 to play in the
game.
Harvard outshot the Pride, 31-25 and picked up 20 ground
balls to Hofstra's 18. The Pride won the battle at the face-off X
as junior John Antoniades won nine of the 17 face-offs in the
AMERICA TEAM: Seniors Adrian Sorichetti and John
Antoniades were named to the 2013 Inside Lacrosse Face-Off
Yearbook Preseason All-America team. Sorichetti was named
to the second team while Antoniades was named to the third
team.
2013 CAA PRESEASON POLL: Three
Pride players were named to the 2013
Preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association
Men's Lacrosse team and Hofstra was

picked to finish third in the CAA according to a vote of the
league's head lacrosse coaches, the conference announced
earlier this month.
Senior midfielder Adrian Sorichetti (Whitby, ONT, Canada) and
face-off specialist John Antoniades (Hauppauge, NY), and
graduate-student defender Mark Mullen (Harleysville, PA) were
Hofstra's representatives on the Preseason All-CAA team.
Sorichetti, who was an All-CAA first team selection in 2012,
scored 24 goals and added 14 assists last season. Antoniades,
a two-time All-CAA selection including a second team pick in
2012, was second in the CAA and 22nd in the country in faceoff
winning percentage last year. He is a 2013 team captains
and was a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association
(USILA) All-American honorable mention selection in 2011.
Mullen, one of four Pride captains this season, was an All-CAA
second team selection last season while usually marking the
opponents' top offensive threat.
Massachusetts, which captured its first CAA men's lacrosse
championship a year ago, has been picked to win the CAA title
again in 2013. The Minutemen received five first-place votes
and finished atop the poll with 35 points. Penn State earned
two first-place nods and was second with 31 points, while
Drexel and Hofstra tied at third with 22 points apiece. Delaware
(16) and Towson (15) placed at fifth and sixth, respectively,
followed by Saint Joseph's. The league's coaches also
selected UMass senior attacker Will Manny as the CAA's
Preseason Player of the Year.
The CAA boasts three of its seven squads in the Preseason
United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA)
Top-20, as Massachusetts (12), Penn State (15) and Hofstra
(20) were ranked earlier this week. Drexel and Delaware
received votes in the USILA preseason poll.
Manny, the CAA's 2012 Player of the Year and USILA firstteam
All-American, led UMass with 77 points on 44 goals and
33 assists a year ago. He ranked third nationally in points per
game (4.81), eighth in assists per game (2.75) and ninth in
goals per game (2.75). Manny was a Tewaaraton Award
Finalist who notched four game-winners and placed 82.3
percent of his shots on-frame while posting a 54.3 shot
percentage, which was fifth best in the NCAA. Manny was
named CAA Rookie of the Year in 2010 and has earned All-
CAA honors three-straight seasons.
Joining Manny on the preseason All-CAA squad at the attack
position is Drexel's Robert Church and PSU's Jack Forster.
Church finished last season with 29 goals and 18 assists and
Forster wrapped up the 2012 season with 27 goals and 15
assists, as both players earned second-team All-CAA honors.
Hofstra's Adrian Sorichetti, UMass' Colin Fleming and PSU's
Nick Dolik earned spots in the midfield on the preseason All-
CAA team. Fleming had a breakout season for the Minutemen
scoring 34 points on 26 goals and eight assists and
spearheaded UMass man-advantage unit, notching seven
tallies. Dolik has earned All-CAA second team honors for the
past two seasons and finished last season with 18 goals, four
assists for 22 points.
Penn State's Kessler Brown, a junior, earned a spot on the
preseason All-CAA team as the long-stick after tallying 14
groundballs, giving up just two turnovers, causing 11 and
helping PSU lead the league in caused turnovers (7.93 pg)
with Antoniades as the preseason All-CAA faceoff specialist.
Four defensemen were honored this preseason, as three
earned postseason All-CAA honors in 2012. Hofstra's Mark
Mullen, Towson's John Fennessy and UMass' Jake Smith and
Ryan Hollenbaugh earned preseason honors. Smith recorded
28 groundballs and added 11 caused turnovers and teamed up
with Hollenbaugh, who tallied 25 groundballs and 12 caused
turnovers, to help UMass hold opponents to just 7.19 goals per
game, the third-lowest total in the NCAA last season.
Fennessy helped the Tigers' defense with 18 groundballs and
14 caused turnovers during his sophomore season.
Penn State junior goalkeeper Austin Kaut, a two-time All-CAA
honoree and 2011 CAA Rookie of the Year, is the league's
preseason goalkeeper. Kaut protected the Nittany Lion's cage
with a league second-best .584 save percentage and recorded
a 7.93 goals-against average over 15 games in earning USILA
All-America second team honors.
All three games of the CAA Men's Lacrosse Championship will
be held at the highest-seed in 2013 with semifinals set for May
3 and the title contest to be held on May 5. These dates are
* - CAA Title Game
QUICK WORK IN LAST YEAR’S OPENER: Torin Varn
wasted little time in scoring the Pride’s first goal of the 2012
season against Sacred Heart last February. John Antoniades
won the opening face-off, ran into the attack zone and fed
Varn, who scored just seven seconds into the season.
TIERNEY SECOND FASTEST TO 50 WINS: Pride coach Seth
Tierney recorded his 50th victory as head coach of the Pride in
his 76th contest. He is the second-fastest to reach 50 wins in

Pride men’s lacrosse history, behind the legendary Howdy
Myers who did it in 73 games.
CAATITLES: Hofstra has captured two CAA regular season
titles under Coach Seth Tierney. Hofstra won the regular
season title in 2009 and in 2011.. The Pride captured the 2008
CAA Championship Tournament title in 2008.
NCAA TOURNAMENT STREAK ENDS AT FOUR: Hofstra’s
streak of consecutive NCAA Championship Tournament
appearances ended at four in 2012. The Pride made NCAA
appearances in four consecutive years, from 2008 through
2011, for the first time in school history, breaking the string of
three straight in 1973-75 and 1999-2001.
HOFSTRA TO HOST 2014 NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S
LACROSSE QUARTERFINALS. For the eighth time since
1997, Hofstra University has been selected to serve as host for
the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals, the
NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Committee announced last
November.
The University was named as one of the two sites for the 2014
Quarterfinals, with the University of Delaware serving as the
other site.
James M. Shuart Stadium, which has a new FieldTurf surface
and a new lighting system for 2013, will host one of the two
quarterfinal doubleheaders on Saturday, May 17, 2014. It will
be the first NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinal that
Hofstra has hosted since May 21, 2011 when eventual national
champion Virginia defeated Cornell, 13-9, and upstart Denver
defeated Johns Hopkins, 14-9.
James M. Shuart Stadium has been an important venue in
NCAA Lacrosse history as it served as the site of the first-ever
NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship game in 1971,
which saw Cornell post a 12-6 victory over Maryland. Since
then the stadium has hosted first round NCAA Tournament
games in 1973, 1993 and 2006, and NCAA Quarterfinals in
1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2009 and 2011.
The largest crowds in James M. Shuart Stadium history
occurred during the hosting of the NCAA Lacrosse
Quarterfinals. A stadium record of 13,447 spectators, the
largest-ever lacrosse crowd on Long Island, were in
attendance for the 2011 NCAA Quarterfinals, while a crowd of
12,292, a then-NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship
Quarterfinal, witnessed the 1999 NCAA Quarterfinals. In 2001
10,510 fans attended the quarterfinals.
In addition, advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals hosted at
Hofstra has been a good luck charm for one of the four
participants. The eventual national champions have come
through the NCAA Quarterfinals in Hempstead, New York in
six of the seven previous quarterfinals hosted by Hofstra.
OUTSHOT: Hofstra was outshot in 11 of their 14 games in
2012. The only contests in which the Pride took more shots
were against St. John’s, 38-37, Dartmouth, 39-33, and St.
Joseph’s, 40-34.
ONE-GOAL DECISIONS: The Pride were involved in seven
one-goal games in 2012, posting a 1-6 mark in those seven
contests. Hofstra had six one-goal decisions in 2009, recording
a 6-0 mark. In both 2007 and 2008, the Pride had eight one
goal games with Hofstra going 1-7 in 2007 and 6-2 in 2008.
NON-CONFERENCE GAMES: The Pride was 4-4 last season
in non-conference games. Hofstra was a perfect 8-0 in their
non-conference games in 2011.
SIX PRIDE PLAYERS WERE NAMED TO 2012 ALL-CAA
TEAMS: Hofstra junior Adrian Sorichetti led six Pride players
who were named to the 2012 All-Colonial Athletic Association
Men's Lacrosse teams.Sorichetti was named to the All-CAA
first team while juniors John Antoniades and Mark Mullen were
named to the second team. Freshmen Tyler Begley, Mike
Malave and Ryan Rielly were named to the CAA All-Rookie
Team.
GVOZDEN: 2012 CAA MEN’S LACROSSE SCHOLAR-
ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Hofstra goalie Andrew Gvozden
was named the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Men's
Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year last June. Gvozden is the
second consecutive Pride student-athlete to be named the
CAA Men's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year following
Michael Skudin in 2011.
The CAA honors one Scholar-Athlete in each of its 22
championship sports. Nominees for the award must be a
starter or important reserve on their team and must have a
minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25. The winners
were selected by a vote of the sports information directors at
each CAA institution.
Gvozden, who graduated from Hofstra with a degree in
entrepreneurship, was a six-time Dean's List student and was
named to both the Colonial Athletic Association
Commissioner's Academic Award and the Hofstra Athletics
Academic Honor Roll in all four years.
Gvozden was also one of 74 men's lacrosse student-athletes,
across all three NCAA divisions, who was named to the 2012
United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA)
Scholar All-America Team.
Gvozden, a native of Millersville, Maryland, started all 14
games playing in 861:18, just 3:33 short of the entire season in
2012. He recorded an 8.50 goals against average, which
ranked third in the Colonial Athletic Association and 12th in
Division I. Gvozden also posted a .551 save percentage which
ranked third in the CAA and 17th in the country.
A 2011 USILA All-America honorable mention and All-CAA
second team selection, Gvozden set a career-high with 150
saves in 2012. He tallied double-digit saves in nine of the 14
games including 17 stops against Fairfield and 14 against
NCAA Championship Tournament teams North Carolina and
Massachusetts. In 2011, Gvozden led the nation in goals
against average with a 6.00 mark and ranked third in Division I
in save percentage with a .602.
During his Hofstra career, Gvozden played in 53 games,
posting a 32-17 won-loss record with a 7.82 goals against
average and a .562 save percentage.
AT THE FACE-OFF X: In 2011, face-off specialist John
Antoniades posted a strong challenge to break Joe Carrello’s
single season face-off winning percentage record of .652 set in
1989. Unfortunately for Antoniades he fell short, winning 174 of
271 face-offs that season for a .642 mark to post the third-best
face-off winning percentage in school history..
THE FIRST AND THE LAST: With their victories over
Delaware at Giants Stadium in 2009 and at the New
Meadowlands Stadium on April 10, 2010, Hofstra and
Delaware played the first college lacrosse game at the New
Meadowlands Stadium (Met Life Stadium) and the last
lacrosse game at Giants Stadium.
ON THE WALL OF MARGIOTTA HALL: On April 18, 2009,
Hofstra Athletics retired the jersey numbers of two all-time
lacrosse greats, Doug Shanahan and Jerry Simandl. They are
the first two Pride lacrosse players to have their numbers
retired and jersey numbers are displayed on the wall of
Margiotta Hall in the south end zone of James M. Shuart
Stadium.
Simandl (#10) lettered in lacrosse at Hofstra from 1952 through
1955 under legendary coach Howard “Howdy” Myers. He
earned All-America second team honors as a senior in 1955
after leading the nation in scoring with 102 points and assists
with 58 while placing second with 44 goals. He was also an allconference
Laurie Cox Division selection as a senior and was
named to the USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game.
Singled out as one of the top ten players that he ever coached
by Myers, Simandl still holds the Hofstra records for most
points and most assists in a single season, most assists and
points in a career, and is third in goals scored in a career in
Pride history. He finished his Hofstra career with 119 goals and
119 assists for 238 points. All four of his Hofstra teams were
nationally-ranked, including the 1955 team that was ranked
third.
Shanahan (#26), who played at Hofstra from 1998 through
2001, was a two-sport All-American athlete in both football and
lacrosse. While a standout as a defensive back in football and
leading the Pride in interceptions as a junior and senior, he
excelled in lacrosse over his four year career at Hofstra. As
Hofstra’s most honored lacrosse player, Shanahan was a
three-time All-America selection earning honorable mention in
1999, second team honors in 2000, and first team accolades
as a senior. In addition to his first team honors in 2001, he also
earned: the Lt. Donald McLaughlin Award from the USILA as
Division I Midfielder of the Year; the Lt. Ray Enners Award as
USILA Division I Player of the Year; and the inaugural
Tewaaraton Trophy as college lacrosse’s Player of the Year.
Shanahan also earned All-America East honors four times,
picking up first team honors as a freshman, as well as Rookie
of the Year honors in 1998, as a sophomore in 1999 and as a
senior in 2001 when he was also voted Most Valuable Player
honors. He was named to the 2001 USILA North-South Senior
All-Star Game where he captured the Most Valuable Player
award. During his Hofstra career, he tallied 95 goals and 44
assists for 139 points, a school-record 450 ground balls while
winning 528 of 868 face-offs for a .608 winning percentage. In
2002 Shanahan was named to the United States National
Team for the ILF World Championships and earned the ILF’s
Most Valuable Player Award. He was also voted to the All-
World Team
ROYLE-SOMBROTTO LOCKER ROOM: The Hofstra Men’s
Lacrosse Locker Room was officially dedicated before the
Pride’s game against Delaware on April 12, 2008. The Harry
Royle-Vincent Sombrotto Pride Locker Room, named in honor
of former Hofstra Lacrosse Coach Harry Royle and former
Pride All-American and National Lacrosse Hall of Fame
member Vincent Sombrotto, was made possible by a generous
gift from James Metzger, a former teammate of Sombrotto and
a standout player under Coach Royle.

REMEMBERING NICK: On November 28 2006, the Hofstra
University family lost a beloved member of the community with
the passing of men’s lacrosse player Nicholas Colleluori. His
14-month battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma was a study in
courage, dignity and the relentless attitude that he brought to
everything he did. A son, a brother, a fiancé, a teammate, a
classmate and a friend, Nick cherished and honored all of
these titles. He will be remembered for the love and joy that he
brought to so many people and a spirit that will last forever.
The Hofstra lacrosse program is active in fund-raising activities
in the fight against lymphoma. In addition, each year one
senior, who exemplifies the spirit and relentless attitude that
Nick displayed, will be selected to wear the number 27 uniform.
This year’s honoree is captain and face-off specialist John
Antoniades.
2013 HOFSTRA GAME SUMMARIES
GAME 1 – SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 16 VS. SACRED HEART: Junior
Torin Varn scored a career-high five goals and freshman Sam Llinares
scored four goals in his collegiate debut, including the opener just 3:35
into the game, to lead the 20th-ranked Pride of Hofstra to a 14-9
victory over Sacred Heart in the season opener for both teams at
James M. Shuart Stadium.
Junior Lance Yapor added a goal and an assist and senior Adrian
Sorichetti added a goal and two assists to help Hofstra win the season
opener for the fourth time in the last five seasons. Hofstra opened a
four-goal lead in the opening nine minute in the wire-to-wire victory as
the Pride improved to 12-0 all-time against the Pioneers.
Sophomore goalie Chris Selva made 12 saves to record his first
collegiate victory. Sacred Heart's Mike Mawdsley notched a hat trick in
the losing effort and Shane Foley finished with two goals.
Hofstra surged to a 10-3 halftime lead thanks to a fast start in which
the Pride garnered the early momentum. Llinares, an All-American at
Hauppauge High School, scored Hofstra's first goal of 2013 with 11:25
left in the first quarter. Llinares finished with four goals and an assist
for five points, marking the most goals by a Hofstra freshman since Jay
Card scored five times versus Sacred Heart in 2008.
The Pride would never relinquish the lead after Llinares tally. Varn
scored back-to-back goals just 10 seconds apart and Sorichetti
converted a man-up opportunity for the 4-0 edge.
Sacred Heart showed signs of life when Shane Foley and Mawdsley
scored two quick goals. But sophomore defensive midfielder John
Reicherter's strike, the first of his career, with 40 seconds left in the
opening quarter gave Hofstra a 5-2 lead and momentum entering the
second quarter.
Hofstra led by as much as seven in the second half after Llinares
picked up his fourth goal on a wraparound by the cage's left side for an
11-4 edge with 10:55 on the clock in the third. The cushion proved
valuable as Sacred Heart went on a four-goal run. Mawdsley scored
twice in that stretch, finding the net off a rebound with 17 seconds left
in the third quarter to make it 11-6.
Seth Richard continued the comeback bid with an unassisted score
just 12 seconds into the fourth quarter. Mawdsley then made it 11-8
with 12:55 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Hofstra's defense would tighten from that point with the Pride not
allowing another score for a 10:45 stretch. The Pride iced the game in
a key stretch when Selva made an athletic save on Matt King's laser.
Selva caught the shot in the pocket and fired an outlet pass to
sophomore Ryan Rielly. The long-stick midfielder, raced down, got in
the clear and took it all the way in for a goal and a 12-8 advantage.
Foley scored with 2:10 left for Sacred Heart, but the Pioneers would
not get closer than three goals as Varn collected his fifth goal, during
the Pioneer's full-field ride, with 1:28 left and Mike Malave provided the
final margin with an unassisted goal in the final minute. Hofstra outshot
Sacred Heart, 43-32 while the Pioneers picked up 38 ground balls to
the Pride's 36.
GAME 2 – SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23 VS. #13 PRINCETON: Pride
junior Torin Varn scored a game-high four goals but the Tigers scored
five unanswered goals over a 15 minute period in the first half to erase
a two goal deficit as 13th-ranked Princeton defeated No. 20 Hofstra,
10-7 at James M. Shuart Stadium. The Pride had their record evened
at 1-1 while the Tigers are 1-0.
Varn, who tallied five goals in the Hofstra season opener last week,
added four more today to give him nine for the season. Junior Drew
Coholan scored his first of the season, sophomore Mike Malave
notched his second of the year and freshman Sam Llinares posted his
fifth of the season to go along with two assists for Hofstra. Pride goalie
Chris Selva assisted on Varn's second goal of the game early in the
third quarter. Selva made eight saves in the Hofstra goal.
Princeton was led by freshman Ryan Ambler with a goal and three
assists and sophomore Mike MacDonald with three goals. Senior Jeff
Froccaro and sophomore Tom Schreiber each had two goals and one
assist while Kip Orban added two goals for the Tigers. Freshman
goalie Matt O'Connor made six saves for his first collegiate victory.
After MacDonald opened the scoring with an unassisted tally 2:15 into
the contest, the Pride scored three unanswered goals, with Malave,
Llinares and Varn scoring within a span almost seven minutes in the
first for a 3-1 lead.
But the Tigers went on a 5-0 run to close out the first half to take a 6-3
lead-a lead they would not relinquish- at the intermission. MacDonald
opened the spurt with his second of the game with 1:23 to play in the
first. Schreiber tied the contest just 1:41 into the second quarter before
Ryan Ambler scored the Tiger's fourth unassisted goal of the game
with 8:55 to play to give Princeton a 4-3 advantage. Ambler would then
assist on the next two goals, MacDonald's third of the game with 5:27
to play in the second and Jeff Froccaro's first of the year with 1:25 left
in the half to give the Tigers a 6-3 lead at the break. Princeton outshot
the Pride, 12-3 in the second quarter to open up the lead.
Hofstra made a run at Princeton in the third, scoring three of the first
four goals as Varn notched his second of the game, off a pass from
Selva, who carried the ball down the field and found the junior in front
of the Tiger cage just 1:10 into the second half. Orban put the
Princeton lead back to three at 7-4 off a pass from Froccaro just 1:02
later before Coholan scored off a pass from Lance Yapor and Varn
completed his second hat-trick of the year, from Llinares with 4:51 to
play to close to 7-6.
But Froccaro scored the only man-up goal of the game, from
Schreiber, 2:58 into the fourth quarter and Orban notched his second
from Ambler almost two minutes later to boost the lead to 9-6. Varn
scored his fourth, from Llinares, with 5:04 to play for Hofstra to close to
9-7. But Schreiber scored off a pass from face-off specialist Bobby
Lucas just nine seconds later to close out the scoring.
The Tigers outshot the Pride in the game, 38-33 and picked up 30
ground balls to Hofstra's 23. Princeton, which has now won two
consecutive games over the Pride and five of the last seven, takes a
14-13 lead in the series.
GAME 3 – TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26 AT #13 FAIRFIELD: Seven
Pride players scored goals, including two each by junior Torin Varn
and freshman Sam Llinares, to lead Hofstra to a 9-2 victory over 13thranked
Fairfield at Alumni Field. The Pride improved to 2-1 on the
season while Fairfield slipped to 2-2.
In addition to Varn and Llinares, who also had an assist in the contest,
junior Lance Yapor tallied a goal and two assists while classmate Drew
Coholan added a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie Chris Selva

posted eight saves, including five in the second half to record his
second win of the season.
The two teams battled through a spirited but even first quarter with
each team denting the twine once. Coholan opened the scoring just
3:28 into the game with his second of the season. But the lead was
short-lived as the Stags tied the game just 1:30 later as Sam Snow fed
Nick Guida for his fifth goal of the season.
Hofstra then went on a four-goal run and took the lead midway through
the second quarter as Varn notched his 10th goal of the season at the
7:12 mark, off a pass from Coholan, with Fairfield sophomore Tristan
Sperry off for a slash. Llinares boosted the Pride lead to 3-1 coming
around the cage and beating Murphy for his sixth of the season with
4:20 to play in the half. Hofstra and Selva, who made three saves in
the half, were helped by the posts in the second as two Stag shots
bounced off the pipes.
The Pride added two more in the third as freshman Brian von Bargen
scored the first goal of his career at the 8:38 mark coming in from left
side of Murphy for a 4-1 lead. Less than four minutes later, Adrian
Sorichetti posted his second of the season from the right side off a
short pass from Yapor for a 5-1 advantage.
Fairfield junior Jordan Greenfield ended the Pride run with an extraman
goal, from Snow, with Tyler Johnston off for a cross check with 55
seconds to play in the quarter. But Hofstra sophomore John Reicherter
boosted the Pride lead back to four with an unassisted goal on a run in
from midfield with four seconds to play in the period. It was his second
goal of the season.
The Pride blew the game open in the fourth quarter with three goals in
the final 4:10 as Llinares scored his second of the game at the 10:50
mark. Yapor then tallied his second of the season, from Llinares,
almost two minutes later while on the extra-man for an 8-2 advantage.
Varn then scored his second of the game and 11th of the season, from
Yapor, also on the extra-man with 1:35 to play.
The Pride outshot the Stags, 40-26 while the ground balls were even at
26-all.Hofstra also was successful in 17 of 18 clear attempts.
