ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Mario Coniglio for his
patience and support; his ready availability and sound advice. I would also like to
thank my co-supervisor Dr. Shaun Frape and thesis examination committee members
Dr. Mike Melchin and Dr. Fred Longstaffe, all of whom provided excellent input into
the thesis.
Mr. R. Trevail (formerly of Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources) and Mr.
T.R. Carter (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources) provided a great deal of helpful
information, and for this I am very greatful.
Everyone in the Department of Earth Sciences must be commended for their
obliging and helpful attitudes, especially Mr. Peter Fisher, Mr. Peter Russel, Mrs.
Nadia Bahar, Mr. Don Helm, Mr. Bob Drimmie and the isotope laboratory staff and all
of the secretaries.
Without the support of family and friends an undertaking such as the
completion of a thesis would be infinitely more difficult I would therefore, like to thank
my husband, Rick and my mother and stepfather, Shirley and Garnet Allen, all of
whom were supportive, encouraging and made many personal sacrifices during the
course of my research. At the end of a hard day the happy, smiling faces of my three
children, Rebecca, Sandy and Riki-Kay makes everything worthwhile. I would also like
to thank my friend Sylvia Gammara whose positive attitude was always uplifting.
This research is supported by NSERC and Ontario Geoscience Research
grants to M. Coniglio and S.K. Frape. An NSERC postgraduate scholarship and
Texaco Geological Research Grant were provided to Kathy Middleton.
