Consider NMMU – For a Better U
As the biggest university in the Southern
and Eastern Cape Nelson Mandela Metropolitan
University offers a wide range of
internationally recognised academic and
professional programmes at its six
campuses in Port Elizabeth and George.
George Campus – Growing tomorrow
George Campus offers a variety of qualifications in natural resource management,
education; business and economic sciences:
A diploma (normally three years) can be followed by a fourth year of study to obtain a
BTech degree, provided that the student has performed at a certain level.
Greater flexibility with “generic” first year in business studies
From the 2012 academic year students who are pursuing a National Diploma in
business studies at NMMU George Campus will have the added benefit of a “generic”
first year. This innovation means that students who enrol for the National Diploma in
Marketing, Management or Tourism Management will be exposed to the same
subjects in their first year, and should not feel pressured to make a “final” decision on
which of the three areas of specialisation they would ultimately like to focus on.
The broad exposure to subjects such as Economics, Marketing, Management, Logistics,
Tourism; as well as End-user Computing, Communication and Business
Accounting in the first year of study enables students to make well-informed choices
on their career paths from their second year of study, without having to incur the costs
usually associated with changing to another programme.
From the second year of study, students are then able to steer their careers in any of
the three specialisation areas: Marketing, Management or Tourism Management.
PMR Africa, a market leader in research and statistics, completed their annual
reviews in several sectors recently.
In the category: Institutions for Higher Education / Tertiary Institutions, South Cape
FET College received a Golden Arrow Award for 2011. This translates to a survey
conducted by PMR from a sample of 115 chief executive officers, managing directors,
owners of companies, company directors, senior employees and senior local and
provincial government officials in the Southern Cape and Karoo region.
The college was rated “Excellent” with a 1st overall place in this category. South Cape
FET College also received the award as part of “Leaders and Achievers”, companies
and institutions doing most in their sectors over the twelve months covered in the
survey, to stimulate the economic growth and development of the region.
This achievement is even more appreciated should one take into account the very
strong competition in the region from especially higher education institutions. At an
Awards Breakfast held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Oubaai, George, the awards for
this region was distributed to achievers in various sectors. At this prestigious event
the Deputy Chief Executive Officer: Innovation and Development, of South Cape FET
College, Dr Rajesh Maharaj, was the guest speaker. According to Mr Johan Hattingh,
Chief Executive Officer of PMR Africa, the invitation extended to Dr Maharaj to act as
guest speaker proved most successful, as his theme of leadership based on value
principles, spoke directly to the heart of the matter. The presentation was so well
received that a special downloadable version was made available on the website of
South Cape FET College. Within the first day after it became available, more than 20
people downloaded the document.
The Chief Executive Officer of South Cape FET College, Mr Luvuyo Ngubelanga,
extended a sincere word of thanks and appreciation to staff members and his senior
management team for contributing towards this success story of the college. From a
2nd overall place in 2101, with a Silver Arrow Award, this institution managed to
change perceptions favourably in its region to claim first prize this year.
Mr. J.A. Foster, M.L.A. (1904), local Oudtshoorn
attorney, asked Mr Bullock to design a double storey
manor house in 1902. The Municipal valuation in
1907 was £10,500.12. Mr Foster was a member of
the Cape Legislative Assembly and a real high roller.
Rumor had it that he maintained a wife and a
mistress, both living in style in separate parts of the
mansion. Entertainment was lavish. When the feather
boom collapsed in 1914, Foster went bankrupt. It is
rumored that he hid from his creditors in the cellar,
reported himself as dead, and in disguise attended
his own funeral, the coffin filled with sandstone
fragments. He was never seen again in the Little
Karoo. The Standard Bank took over the property and
sold it to the educational authorities. The mansion
was used as a teacher's training college until 1924
and then as a hostel for girls and offices for the CJ
Langenhoven Commercial School. It became vacant
in 1972 and fell into disrepair. In 1973 the administrator
temporarily placed the building on the declaration
list. On
17 May 1991, Foster’s Folly was declared a National
Monument and has been restored to its former glory.
GUEST HOUSE AND IN-TRAINING FACILITY
Today, Foster's Manor is a double storey ostrich
Feather Palace, established as a guest house and
forming part of the South Cape FET College in-
training facility. Until 2008, for a period of eight years,
it served as practical venue for the Hospitality
students studying the Granger Bay Hotel School’s
Food and Beverage Management Diploma Course at
South Cape College Oudtshoorn Campus. Although
this course is unfortunately not offered anymore, the
facility is now being utilized as examination venue by
the NCV Hospitality lecturers for the ISAT Practical
Examinations of the NCV students studying at South
College Oudtshoorn Campus. The Food and Beverage
students received theoretical and practical
training at the Manor. Practical training included
preparing and serving breakfast, planning and organizing
functions, preparing and serving dinners and
conference handling. Foster’s Manor was an
extension of their theoretical training received both at
the Oudtshoorn Campus and at Foster’s Manor.
Foster’s Manor has excellent potential for serving as
a training facility for Hospitality students where they
can experience the full spectrum of Hospitality
Services (front office, back of house, front of house,
kitchen, F&B, conferencing and Housekeeping)
provided that all parties concerned focus on achieving
this goal. The topic of wine and food paring is
nowadays high on conversation lists, largely attributable
to the influence of celebrity chefs, great tasting
food and good quality wines. Combine this with the
lighting speed of the Internet and you have a huge
number of amateur wine connoisseurs that have
access to information we could only have dreamt
about not so many years ago. As one will never stop
learning and accumulating information about the
complexities of wine and food, the multitude of
combinations of cuisines and flavours to experiment
with and the challenge, and one might say, a tasty
one, of finding the best wine to match, a “Food and
Wine Pairing” lecture seems fit. Ms Agnes Fourie,
Manager at Foster’s Manor, recently presented such
a lecture to the NCV Hospitality level 4 students.
She has obtained her Wine Course certificate from
the Cape Wine Academy and is currently busy with
her diploma studies in this field. Fourie’s favourate
quotation, from Andre Simon, aptly captures her
passion for food, wine and hospitality: “Food without
wine is a corpse; wine without food is a ghost; united
and well matched they are as body and soul, living
partners”.
ACCOMMODATION AND CONFERENCING
FACILITIES The presence of the ostrich, whose
feathers turned the farmers into millionaires, takes
one back to bygone times. A stay at Foster's Manor
is a must and an unforgettable experience. Its lush
tranquil garden and 8 spacious rooms will whisk you
away to an era gone by. Couple this with the superb
meals served in the manor house, the tranquil
surroundings and the breathtaking surrounding
scenery, and you have venue very conducive to
either relaxation or high productivity - you choose!
The Manor has two family rooms, two twin rooms,
three double rooms and one honeymoon room.
Foster’s Manor presently operates only as a Bed
and Breakfast establishment and caters for small
conferences for which refreshments are provided.
SCC Representatives: From left to right: Proud representatives of South Cape FET
College with the Golden Arrow Award are Hennie Cronje (New Business Manager),
Luvuyo Ngubelanga (CEO), Dr Rajesh Maharaj (DCEO: Innovation and Development),
Linda Majola (George Campus Head) and Yvonne Botha (HOD: Marketing and Communication).
CEO of South Cape FET College with PMR
Award: Mr Luvuyo Ngubelanga, CEO of
South Cape FET College with the award
proving this institution’s first overall place in
the Southern Cape and Little Karoo region.
South Cape College, forming part of the Western
Cape Communication and Advocacy Forum, took
this year’s “Brrr..” Campaign to heart through
social responsibility actions.
The Forum decided on the “Brrr..” theme for this
year, referring to Building Relationships (BR). The
theme will be supported by four sub-themes, one
for each quarter, viz. Brave, Brilliant, Bright and
Bravo.
Aligning themselves to the Building Relationships
theme and the sub-theme of Brave for the first
quarter of 2011, South Cape College took the
social responsibility scene by storm. In February a
group of staff and students from various campuses
participated in the annual Outeniqua Wheelchair
Challenge in George. The event took place on
Saturday, 19 February 2011. Apart from international
and national disabled athletes participating
in the 10km, half marathon and marathon events
(the only such accredited events in Africa), a 5km
fun event is also held every year.
The fun event comprises a 5km route where
volunteers push a disabled person in a wheelchair
or other mobile device so everybody gets a
chance to participate. The spirit amongst staff and
students of South Cape FET College was amazing
and they stood out as a group in their bright green
shirts! Oudtshoorn and George Campuses were
well represented, in addition to Central Office.
Even the DCEO: Innovation and Development, Dr
Rajesh Maharaj, pushed a chair.
This was followed in March by several events in
support of the annual CANSA Shavathon.
Haircare students from Hessequa formed a
group to participate in a Shavathon event held
on the Saasveld Campus of Nelson Mandela
Metropolitan University in George. Supported
by a group of students from Oudtshoorn, the
“pink cloud” from South Cape College (aptly
named for their pink t-shirts!) took over this
university campus! The Oudtshoorn and Bitou
Campuses of the college also held their own
Shavathon events and the George Campus in
turn assisted with Shavathon events in the
Garden Route Mall in George and in shopping
centres in Knysna. Shavathon Southern Cape
was undoubtedly dominated by this enthusiastic
social responsibility volunteers!
South Cape College plans to continue participating
actively in these types of events throughout
the year to prove our commitment to the
communities in our catchment area and
beyond. Social responsibility is a wonderful
way to get involved in your community, to win
the trust of people and to seek self-fulfilment.
By participating in and supporting such events a
positive image of our institution is portrayed.
South Cape FET College is committed towards
delivering quality education and training to ALL
communities within, and even outside, our
catchment area, and THIS is the image we want
to earn in our communities.
This project was headed by the Quality Manager, Mr Deon van Eck, assisted by Mr Garfield
Solomons. Their hard work and meticulous planning paid off to great benefit for the College.
The staff’s input regarding their time, energy, coordination, re-writing and evidence building
to get the College’s process documents aligned with its activities, was commended.
Ngubelanga praised the staff for their commitment and expressed the pride of the College
on achieving this prestigious certification.
All the College processes and procedures were verified and tested by a SABS Auditor and
a wide spectrum of its processes and procedures were actually verified on different sites
(Oudtshoorn, Central Office, Mossel Bay and George Campus). The SABS Auditor in all
instances had the prerogative to decide on the sampling of sites as well as the areas of work
on which verification were to be obtained.
In the case of South Cape College, the following areas of work were verified: Academic,
SABS Certification for South Cape College
“We have actually passed the test. This is really a milestone to be proud of.”
These were the joyous words with which CEO, Mr Luvuyo Ngubelanga,
announced the SABS ISO 9001 Certification awarded to South Cape College.
The fact that the College passed the SABS Stage 2 Audit
now presents the next challenge of maintaining the
standard and systems. The certification is valid for a period
of three years, but the College will be evaluated annually to
ensure compliance and improve performance.
It includes Beaufort West in the north, Heidelberg in the west, Plettenberg Bay in
the east and the coastal line. The population of the college’s catchment area is in
the region of 500 000. College programmes are offered to about 1% of this
population, with a target of growing to 5% over the next 10 years. South Cape
College, also referred to as SCC, has six campuses in addition to the central office
located in George. The campuses are the Beaufort Wes Campus, Bitou Campus
in Plettenberg Bay, George Campus, Mossel Bay Campus, Oudtshoorn Campus
and Hessequa Campus in Riversdale. A training centre for Hospitality and
Tourism students, the Foster’s manor Guest House, is located in Oudtshoorn.
Hostel accommodation is available in George, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn. The
institution was established in 1994, with the amalgamation of the George
Technical College (initially the George Technical Institute, founded in 1968),
Oudtshoorn Technical College (initially the Technical Institute in Oudtshoorn,
founded in 1981), the South Cape Technical Institute in George, which started its
first activities in the early 1980’s, and Mossel Bay which started operating in 1993
as a satellite of the Oudtshoorn Technical College. SCC was the pilot site for
South Africa in this regard, and college mergers followed suit from 2002 onwards.
Mr. J.A. Foster, M.L.A. (1904), local Oudtshoorn attorney,
asked Mr Bullock to design a double storey manor house
in 1902. The Municipal valuation in 1907 was
£10,500.12. Mr Foster was a member of the Cape
Legislative Assembly and a real high roller. Rumor had it
that he maintained a wife and a mistress, both living in
style in separate parts of the mansion. Entertainment
was lavish. When the feather boom collapsed in 1914,
Foster went bankrupt. It is rumored that he hid from his
creditors in the cellar, reported himself as dead, and in
disguise attended his own funeral, the coffin filled with
sandstone fragments. He was never seen again in the
Little Karoo. The Standard Bank took over the property
and sold it to the educational authorities. The mansion
was used as a teacher's training college until 1924 and
then as a hostel for girls and offices for the CJ
Langenhoven Commercial School. It became vacant in
1972 and fell into disrepair. In 1973 the administrator
temporarily placed the building on the declaration list. On
17 May 1991, Foster’s Folly was declared a National
Monument and has been restored to its former glory.
GUEST HOUSE AND IN-TRAINING FACILITY
Today, Foster's Manor is a double storey ostrich Feather
Palace, established as a guest house and forming part of
the South Cape FET College in- training facility. Until
2008, for a period of eight years, it served as practical
venue for the Hospitality students studying the Granger
Bay Hotel School’s Food and Beverage Management
Diploma Course at South Cape College Oudtshoorn
Campus. Although this course is unfortunately not
offered anymore, the facility is now being utilized as
examination venue by the NCV Hospitality lecturers for
the ISAT Practical Examinations of the NCV students
studying at South College Oudtshoorn Campus. The
Food and Beverage students received theoretical and
practical training at the Manor. Practical training included
preparing and serving breakfast, planning and organizing
functions, preparing and serving dinners and conference
handling. Foster’s Manor was an extension of their
theoretical training received both at the Oudtshoorn
Campus and at Foster’s Manor. Foster’s Manor has
excellent potential for serving as a training facility for
Hospitality students where they can experience the full
spectrum of Hospitality Services (front office, back of
house, front of house, kitchen, F&B, conferencing and
Housekeeping) provided that all parties concerned focus
on achieving this goal. The topic of wine and food paring
is nowadays high on conversation lists, largely
attributable to the influence of celebrity chefs, great
tasting food and good quality wines. Combine this with
the lighting speed of the Internet and you have a huge
CRITICAL SKILLS: The SCC teaches students critical skills in Hospitality, Tourism, Office
Administration, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Safety in Society, Education and
Development, Marketing, Electrical Infrastructure, Secretarial, etc. The college also contributes to
the communities in its catchment area with training in Building, Vehicle Servicing, Electrical Work,
Hairdressing, Plumbing, Early Childhood Development and Spray-painting. Qualifications include
a national certificate vocational (NCV), higher certificate, NATED courses (national technical
education) and short courses.
KEY STRENGTHS: Campuses focus on a niche market, viz. Oudtshoorn and Bitou on
Hospitality and Tourism Studies, Mossel Bay and Beaufort West on Engineering and George on
Business. The college offers custom-designed training packages to suit specific needs. Examples
of these include the training of 20 entrepreneurs to manage their own business hives and 80
people to obtain their Code 10 Heavy vehicle driver’s licenses.
STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS Some of South Cape College’s partnership on a national and
provincial level are with the SETA’s, Absa, Unisa, Free State University, DANIDA’s Support to
Education and Skills Development (SESD) Programme, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
and PetroSA. The CIBE (acronym for Community, Industry, Business and Education) Working
Forum has been established by the Innovation and Development Branch of the college. The forum
strives to establish, nourish and implement partnerships with stakeholders across different sectors
to promote cross-benefits for all involved.
SKY
The advent of summer also marks the beginning of a more
interesting night sky, one that is full of interesting constellations and asterisms.
Take time over the holiday season to revive the spirit with some awesome star
gazing - Case Rijsdijk, retired astronomer from Wilderness, leads the way...
Full Moon is on the 10th and it rises at about
19:31. By coincidence the Sun sets at the
same time and it is one of those uncommon
opportunities to find a spot where one has a
clear view of the eastern and western
horizons and enjoy an extended sundowner,
as the full Moon will make it a pleasantly long
evening! There is also the illusion that the
rising full Moon appears larger than when it
is higher up in the sky. Cover the rising Moon
with the blunt end of a pencil and repeat the
exercise an hour or so later, and you will find
the pencil still just covers the Moon! It is the
foreground objects that create the illusion.
The December solstice is on the 22nd and is
the day that we have the longest 'day' and so
also the shortest night. It is however not the
time of earliest sunrise and latest sunset.
Earliest sunrise was on the 6th and latest
sunset will be on January 7th. The reason for
this is that Earth does not travel at a constant
speed around the Sun since its orbit is an
ellipse. The advent of summer also marks
the beginning of a more interesting night sky,
one that is full of interesting constellations
and asterisms. By mid-month the unmistakable
constellation of Orion will be visible low
in the north east after sunset. Of course
Orion is up-side down for us in the southern
hemisphere and looks even less like the
Great Hunter! For the Tswana, the stars of
Orion's sword were 'dintsa le Dikolobe', three
dogs chasing the three pigs of Orion's belt.
Warthogs have their litters while Orion is
prominent in the sky at this time of the year
and usually have litters of three. This, I
think, makes this name far more appropriate
for us in South Africa.
Orion is not only visually impressive, it is
also a showpiece for what's happening!
Betelgeuse is a red super giant star
nearing the end of its life and is about 700
light years away. It's huge - if it were
where our Sun is, then the surface would
engulf the asteroid belt beyond Mars!
Most of the stars in Orion have Arabic
names. Rigel is a young, very hot blue giant
star and the middle 'star' of the dagger, is not
a star at all, it is a huge cloud of gas and dust
where stars are being born - it is a stellar
nursery about 1 600 light years away -
usually called the Great Nebula in Orion, and
as the image shows, it is stunningly beautiful.
To the west, or left, of Orion is the small
cluster of the Hyades in the constellation of
Taurus the Bull, with the bright orange-red
star Aldebaran, the eye of the Bull. Still
further west is the small and bright cluster of
isiLimela, also known as the Pleiades or the
Seven Sisters, and beyond that is the Great
Square of Pegasus.
A line from the three bright "belt stars" in
Orion, through Aldebaran and isiLimela will
end up at the Andromeda galaxy to the lower
right of the Great Square. It appears as a
small fuzzy patch and is the most distant
object visible to the naked eye, 2.3 million
light years away. In the west, Venus shines
unmistakably brightly and the giant planet
education
This vast cloud of gas and dust, 1 600 light years
away, is a stellar nursery where stars are born. Young
hot stars in the cloud make it glow creating an
unforgettable image.
Jupiter can be seen high up in the northeast.
The Southern Cross is now at its lowest and
just visible above the southern horizon and
those with dark skies and a good southern
perspective will have a good opportunity to
see the two galaxies nearest to us: the Large
and Small Magellanic clouds.
For the Venda, the Southern Cross and the
pointers were called Thutlwa, or the Giraffe
stars, as at this time of the year they grazed
from the top of the trees!
