Without question, the Psalms are one of the most treasured books of Sacred Scripture. First published in 1963,
the Grail Psalms were adopted worldwide for the Liturgy of the Hours and approved for general liturgical use
following the Second Vatican Council. The unique character of the Grail Psalms is that they incorporate the
rhythm of the original Hebrew text and are thus easily set to music, such as the psalmody of the late French Jesuit
priest and composer Joseph Gelineau.
In the wake of the 2001 document Liturgiam authenticam, which called for more literal translations of the
Scriptures and liturgical texts, the monks of Conception Abbey, under the direction of Abbot Gregory
Polan, OSB, undertook the work of a new translation of the Grail Psalms. During the process, they conferred
with The Grail, as well as Vatican and international sources, in order to create a version that would meet the
requirements of Liturgiam authenticam and be suitable for English speakers throughout the world. This new
translation was approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops on November 11, 2008, and was
granted a recognitio by the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments on
April 9, 2010.
The Revised Grail Psalms, as the official English-language liturgical Psalter for the United States, will be the
translation used in all future editions of liturgical books published for the United States, and for most other
English-language countries as well. As such, it will play an important part in the Church’s liturgy for years to
come.

Since its original publication in 1971, A Community Mass has become a staple for many parishes. Due to its wide use and
inclusion in various denominational hymnals, additional material and new instrumentations were periodically created by
the composer. These “enrichments” have made A Community Mass adaptable to a variety of circumstances and forces—
from cantor, assembly, and organ to performances by choir and assembly with small or large instrumental ensembles in
addition to organ. Thus an “ordinary” setting is transformed into a “festive” setting in the appropriate liturgical context.
The current edition contains Proulx’s own alterations for incorporating the 2010 Revised Order of Mass.

4 hymnals to serve the needs of
today’s church
Each hymnal begins with the Liturgy of the Hours. In this section, one will find complete settings for sung morning prayer/lauds,
evening prayer/vespers, and night prayer/compline.
The Psalter section follows. Since the four new hymnals each contain a lectionary section that includes responsorial psalms for
the complete three-year cycle, the Psalter section in the front of the book contains other psalm settings useful for Liturgy of the
Hours, entrance or communion processionals, rites, etc. The Psalter in each hymnal is reflective of that particular hymnal’s overall
contents.
The sections that follow address the rites of the church. A complete order of worship is outlined for Christian initiation
of adults, baptism of children, confirmation, anointing of the sick, the funeral mass, marriage, rites of ordination,
reconciliation, and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Catechetical explanations are included for each rite to enable assemblies
to participate more fully.
The Order of Mass follows with several complete Mass settings reflective of the nature of each hymnal. The new ICEL chants will
be included. Various settings of the sprinkling, Kyrie, Gloria, gospel acclamation, intercessions, eucharistic prayer acclamations,
Lord’s Prayer, and Lamb of God follow the complete Mass settings.
At the heart of each hymnal is the extensive section of hymns and songs, beginning with Advent and progressing through
the liturgical year, continuing with major thematic categories, and concluding with music for specific feast days and rites. The
ditors of each hymnal worked diligently to include the best material that can be found—from many different publishers—to help
communities sing the themes and the message of the Church’s liturgy.
The lectionary section for each hymnal will contain responsorial psalms for the complete three-year cycle, using the current ICEL
refrains and verses from the Revised Grail Psalms.
All GIA hymnals conclude with numerous indexes. The Scripture Passages Related to Hymns, Liturgical, and Topical indexes
will assist you in developing a parish community that does not just sing at liturgy, but sings the liturgy. The Metrical Index of
Tunes affords the user the option of singing a text that is suitable for a particular day to a familiar tune when the printed tune
is unfamiliar. Every item of service music in the hymnal is available at a glance for handy reference in the Index of Service
Music. Other indexes are included, ending with the Index of First Lines and Common Titles, placed at the back of the book
for convenience.

for beginning choral conductors. Organized from simple to complex, the 103 pieces in the anthology
represent and address standard and basic techniques, including entrances on and off beats, phrasings
and articulations, fixed and changing dynamic levels, varied tempos and meters, fermatas, extended
beat patterns, and mixed meters. In addition, each of these categories is explained at the beginning of
the anthology. The pieces are scored so conductors have experience with unison, canonic, independent
two-part, homophonic four-part, independent four-part, a cappella, and simple keyboard-accompanied
textures, and much of the music consists of folk songs and other familiar melodies that have been arranged
with a simple harmonic bass part that can be played, if desired, on a keyboard instrument. All
of the music is accessible in terms of melody, rhythm, and harmony, thus allowing the music to be read
with relative ease.
