giants AT 49ERS
october 14, 2012
giants 26, 49ERS 3
Championship Game and dominated the 49ers, 26-3. Picking up from where they left off
the week before, the Giants’ offense looked to establish the running game early on, this
time, against one of the NFL’s best rushing defenses. This strategy would pay off in the
second quarter, when Eli Manning found Victor Cruz off a play-action fake for a six-yard
touchdown pass, to give the Giants a 7-3 lead that they would only build on for the rest
of the game.
David Wilson showed his explosiveness on the kickoff that started the second half, as
he returned it 66 yards, to the 49ers 32-yard line. Ahmad Bradshaw would cap off the
short drive, when he bulldozed his way into the end zone from one yard out in the third
quarter to account for the other Giants touchdown, extending their lead to 17-3. That
was only the second rushing touchdown allowed by the 49ers in their last 44 games.
Lawrence Tynes made field goals of 34, 30, 22, and 32 yards, to account for the rest of
the game’s scoring.
The Giants’ defense seemed to bend at times but never broke in the game, as 49ers’
kicker David Akers’ 42-yard field goal in the first quarter accounted for all of the points
that the Giants give up. This was the first time in two years that the Giants kept the
opposing team out of the end zone for an entire game (Chicago, 2010). 49ers’ quarterback,
Alex Smith, had three of his passes intercepted by the Giants’ defense, on the day. In
addition to forcing the 49ers’ offense into making mistakes, the Giants’ pass-rush had
their best performance of the season, as they recorded a season-high six sacks in the
game. Prince Amukamara’s interception in the second quarter would set up the drive
that resulted in the Giants’ first touchdown of the day. Antrel Rolle intercepted Smith on
back-to-back drives in the third quarter, returning each one more than 20 yards, allowing
the Giants’ offense to start immediately in the red zone, where they came away with field
goals on both possessions.
