Safety Representatives
GMB policy is that all workplace reps are also Safety Representatives and they are accredited as
such, however a workplace rep may wish to elect other members of the workforce to take on the role
of the safety representative.
Health and safety is a priority for GMB. Not only is it essential that we work to protect our members'
health and safety, but also health and safety issues are a good way to recruit other workers into the
Union.
Hazards Magazine
To protect members in the workplace, GMB Safety Representatives need to be well informed. One
of the best ways to do this is to subscribe to Hazards, the award winning health and safety
magazine.
Support for Safety Reps
GMB Safety Representatives do an absolutely vital job. Although mainly volunteers, trade union
appointed Safety Representatives have prevented at least ½ million accidents in the last 20 years,
and have saved countless lives that would have been lost without their intervention.
GMB does not expect Safety Representatives to the job alone. To carry out their role successfully
Safety Representatives need help and support from their members, and other Safety
Representatives and Shop Stewards.
GMB Safety Reps also have a Regional Organiser who can help and advise where necessary. In
addition each GMB Region has a full time Health and Safety Officer.
GMB is recognised as the leading union on health and safety in Britain. GMB Safety
Representatives have access to the best health and safety information available. Our
Representatives will be sent copies of GMB Information Bulletins, Leaflets, Publications and details
of GMB conferences and courses.
All GMB Safety Representatives are fully encouraged to take up the opportunity to attend health and
safety training courses. Surveys prove that trained Safety Representatives are the most effective in
influencing managers.
Training helps Safety Reps to do the job more effectively and some courses may also lead to a
qualification.
The union also offers advice and information on working in partnership with employers, and in some
cases might even be able to offer joint training.
10 Safety Representatives tasks
GMB Safety Representatives can be appointed or elected by GMB in workplaces where we have
recognition. Safety Representatives have a wide range of legal rights under The Safety
Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations 1977.
GMB Safety Representatives should aim to carry out these 10 tasks regularly:
1. Recruit other employees into GMB
2. Inspect the workplace every three months, or when working conditions change.
3. Ensure that their employer consults with them 'in good time' over any changes affecting
health and safety.
4. Investigate potential hazards, accidents and potential hazards.
5. Investigate member's complaints.
6. Consult their members and keep them informed of health and safety developments.
7. Contact their local Health and Safety Executive Inspector or Environmental Health Officer to
inform them who the GMB Safety Representative/s are for that workplace.
8. Ensure that they receive information from their employer, the HSE or EHO Inspector, and
the GMB. This information should be passed on or put on a notice board for members.
9. Write with a fellow Safety Representative to request the formation of a Safety Committee,
unless one already exists.
10. Ensure that their employer provides them with reasonable facilities and time off to do the job
properly.
