ATKV Hartenbos Museum
A museum of the Voortrekker Great Trek
for history
(1836-38) and South Africa's famous
Voortrekkers. Objects from the Great
Trek and the Commemorative Trek of
1938 are displayed in nine themed
rooms (preparation for the journey;
outspan; repair and maintenance;
games; song and dance; women's activities,
amongst others) Tour groups are

Dias Museum Complex
The Dias Museum Complex surrounds
the a venerable Milkwood tree
(Sideroxylon inerme), known as the
world's oldest Post Office, where you can
send a specially franked card, and
includes:
• A Shell Museum - South Africa's
largest collection of shells.
• An indigenous ethno-botanical
garden with a Braille trail, historic
Malay graves, a replica of the padrae
(commemorative cross) which Dias
erected during his visit and the
spring from which Dias and his crew
are thought to have drawn water.
Mossel Bay's Maritime Museum
Which houses a full size replica of the kind
of caravel in which Bartolomeu Dias would
have sailed when he and his crew became
the first Europeans to land in South Africa
(in February, 1488).

Santos Pavilion
One of only two Victorian beach pavilions still in use (the
other being the Royal Pavilion in Brighton). Built in 1906
by a local contractor - the architect having visited
England to study the original. It now houses the Santos
Pavilion restaurant. Suitable for tour groups. Visit

The St Blaize Cave at Mossel Bay Point.
Cape St Blaize Cave
A popular whale-watching spot, ancient shelter and an
important archeological site with artefacts dating back
80 000 years. It was first excavated in 1888. Sign
boards provide information about archeology and
whales; ample tour bus parking.
The cave is situated beneath the St Blaize Lighthouse,
at the start of the St Blaize Trail in the Point Area in
Mossel Bay.

St Blaize Lighthouse
A beacon for navigators since 1864. The original
clockwork mechanism that turned the light required
24-hour maintenance as it needed winding every three
hours - automation only came about in the mid 1970's.
The lighthouse is open to visitors from Monday to
Friday (10:00 to 15:00). Closed on public holidays. Visit

Mossel Bay's Post Office Tree
The world's oldest Post Office, the Post Office Tree,
was first used when Pedro d' Ataida left a letter in a
sailor's boot up in a tree by the fountain. The venerable
Milkwood tree (Sideroxylon inerme) is situated in the
Dias Museum Complex.

Mossel Bay Reserve showcases bio-diversity
The community nature reserve - a first of its kind in Mossel Bay - showcases the unique
bio-diversity of the region whilst creating job-, education-, and tourism opportunities.
The 300 hectare Oyster Bay Reserve was
established in 2003 and is situated
adjacent to the Garden Route Casino, the
Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort and
the suburb of KwaNonqaba and reaches
down to the beach at Oyster Bay.
"The Oyster Bay Reserve is open to the
public.
The Reserve Manager, Aiden Beck, said
that the term bio-diversity refers the
number and variety of life forms found
within a given environment.
"It’s really just a new way of saying
species diversity or species richness and
it can be applied to a small area like our
reserve or to the entire planet - but it’s
important, because it’s one of the ways we
measure the health of an ecosystem."
He said that, as in many other areas of the
world, Mossel Bay’s bio-diversity is threatened
by a number of factors ranging from
urbanisation to global warming.
"Tourism in Mossel Bay relies significantly
on the area’s natural, pristine beauty and
our natural and cultural assets are vital for
creating jobs and income."
He said that the Oyster Bay Reserve will
feature an Environmental Education
Centre as well as a number of tourism
projects ranging from donkey cart tours, to
hiking trails and bird watching. A penguin
rehabilitation centre, beekeeping and
worm farming projects will also be established.
"The Education Centre - which will feature
an intimate amphitheatre for lectures and
demonstrations - has been designed to
showcase sustainable living technologies
and will welcome the local community as
well as visitors."
Mr Beck said that the hiking trails would be
the first of the projects to open to visitors
and that they will follow a route to the
coast via a number of watering holes, and
through three distinct fynbos biomes.
"Although this is essentially a botanical
reserve, there is a variety of game, and
the bird watching is excellent," he said.
Besides its value as a conservation area
and an educational resource, the Reserve
plays an important role in the local tourism
industry.
"People come to Mossel Bay for its natural
beauty and many of them are hungry for
information about its unique environment.
"Now, with a well-managed Reserve so
close to the centre of town (it’s only about

five kilometres from the tourism office),
we’ll be able to offer meaningful experiences
that will fulfil that need - and we
hope that the awareness these experiences
create will go a long way towards
preserving the rich bio-diversity of our
area."

Harry Giddy Public Park
Visit the Harry Giddy Park (Marsh Street) in the centre
of Mossel Bay for a lovely picnic under huge trees and
the sound of birds singing. The park is directly opposite
the Municipal building, on the corner of Marsh and
Wassung Streets. The park is open from 08:00 - 18:00
daily and entrance is free. The park boasts a wide
variety of exotic birds and other animals and is a very
popular venue for children’s parties. Large groups must
preferably phone and make a booking in advance.

die uitkyk vir die sonderlinge swart Tobie
voëltjies op die strande, maar wees ewe
bedag op slange, veral pofadders in die
veld, en dra geskikte, ingeloopte skoene.
Dit kan baie warm word in Desember en
Januarie, maak dus seker dat jy genoeg
water met jou saamneem, behoorlike
voorsorg neem teen sonbrand en maak
altyd seker dat iemand tuis weet watter
roete julle aanpak en wanneer om julle
terug te verwag. Moet nooit van ’n staproete
afdwaal nie. Moenie enige van die
staproetes alleen aanpak nie, stap altyd in
‘n groep en maak seker dat selfone gelaai
is en genoeg lugtyd het om in ‘n noodgeval
te gebruik. Hoewel dit gewoonlik
baie warm is, kan die weer, veral langs die

Bay has the perfect combination of depth
and shelter for the ultimate romance and for
safe and easy calving. That's why all people
agree; Mossel Bay is the perfect place for
whale watching, with its peak from May -
October. On a good whale watching day
you can see the whales from almost any
elevated position on our shore, yet, here
are some of the locals’ favourite spots: The
Point, Cape St Blaize Lighthouse, the lawns
of the Diaz Museum complex, De Bakke or
Diaz Beach, and any cliff top on the southern
side of town.
THE SHARK LAB
The Shark Lab is operated by Oceans Aware, an organization
dedicated to improving the general public's awareness
of the marine environment and ensuring it's sustainability
for future generations.
The aquarium aims to give the public an insight into the
wonders of South Africa's Sharks!
Guests are welcome at intimate aquarium and given
personal tours by the Shark Lab's Aquarists, who will
provide them a close-up and personal tour of the resident
sharks, facility tanks, and share insightful information about
research experiments during a one-on-one journey of
discovery.
For a donation. visitors may feed the sharks on Tuesdays,
Thursdays & Saturdays at 15:00, and the very brave brave
may swim with the sharks in the pelagic tank.
The Shark Lab Aquarium and Research Facility is situated
at the Point, below the Big Blue Restaurant and is open
daily from 09:00 - 17:00.

MEET THE SHARKS
Oceans Aware's Meet the Sharks is a fun, educational
programme teaching children about the biology, evolution
and importance of sharks.
Oceans Aware hosts the 'Meet the Sharks'-programme free

of charge every Friday in December at 13:00 outside the Shark Lab
aquarium. The programme includes a brief presentation and a shark
dissection, which is a quite memorable experience for people of all
ages.

WHITE SHARK AFRICA
White Shark Africa offers shark cage diving for the super
adventurous type. They have a proud history in white shark
research, conservation and education.
Clients are briefed by the White Shark Africa team at the
yacht club before embarking on a dive. The entire trip
generally lasts for about four hours. Lunch, snacks and
drinks are supplied on the boat, where there is also plenty
of opportunity to chat to the staff and ask questions. Upon
return to the dock, afternoon tea is offered and certificates
are handed out. The office is situated in the Prince Vincent

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience the breathtaking natural scenery of the Southern Cape is by traversing one of
the many 4x4 routes in the Mossel Bay area. Routes range from rather easy to the more extreme for the very adventurous.
Experience different landscapes; from coastal
areas, to magnificent mountain ranges to
almost semi-desert areas. The Southern Cape
Route Owners' Forum, in partnership with
Western Cape Nature Conservation, promotes
the Southern Cape as a 4x4 destination and
encourages envirnonmentally sensitive awareness

home to the unique Vleesbaai 4x4Dune Route.
Enjoy the thrills of a vehicle friendly 4x4 dune
route challenge and there is also the option of a
lush camping area that includes ablution
facilities with hot water, a picnic on the beach,
fishing, hiking along the beach. This is an
enjoyable 12km dune ride - pure fun that can
