How
"Skin cancer can be prevented - make sure
you and your loved ones play it safe all year
round, but especially in summer time when the
sun's rays are the harshest. Children and the
youth should take special precautions - two
blistering burns before the age of 18 can
dramatically increase your risk of getting
cancer later in life, " says Sue Janse van Rensburg,
CANSA's CEO. SunSmart is a campaign
run by CANSA to create greater awareness of
safety in the sun. Skin cancer is the most
common cancer in South Africa, with about 20
000 cases and 700 deaths reported annually.
Myths
• People with darker skins are not at risk of
getting skin cancer.
• Sunscreen will protect me completely from
the harmful effects of the sun's rays.
• The sun is only dangerous in summer or
on a hot day.
• One or two burns can't cause cancer.
Do a monthly "Spot the Spot" check up
Always seek medical advice as soon as
possible when worried about a particular spot
on your skin. Check your skin carefully every
month and ask a family member or friend to
examine your back and the top of your head. If
you notice any of these warning signs, see a
doctor or dermatologist immediately:
• Asymmetry - a mole or mark with one half
unlike the other. Common moles are
round and symmetrical.
• Border irregularities - scalloped or poorly
defined edges. Common moles have
smooth, even borders.
• Colour variations or inconsistency - tan,
brown, black, red, white and blue. Usually
moles are a single shade of brown or black.
• Diameter larger than 6 mm.
How to treat sunburn
• cool, damp towels may provide some relief
• encourage the intake of fluids
Plastic inflatable toys are appealing -
brightly coloured and often shaped like
animals - they hang from the ceilings of
almost every beach café in the country.
But these same toys are often the death
traps that sound the alarm and call out at
Sea Rescue.
"If you blow it up, it can blow away," says
NSRI Marketing Director, Meriel Bartlett.
Heat exhaustion
Heat exhaustion results from high environmental
temperatures. Outdoor excursions in
summer often produce a case or two of heat
exhaustion. The blood circulation collapses and
there is often a depletion of the body's store of
salt. Symptoms: cold, clammy skin; rapid,
shallow breathing, loss of consciousness.
Sun stroke and heat stroke
Heatstroke is a response to extreme heat
preventing the body's own temperature regulation
from working. It is referred to as sunstroke if
it is caused by extended exposure to the sun.
Signs include:
• Hot, red, and dry skin • Delirium
• Strong rapid pulse • Fainting
• Dizziness
• Tingling
• Unconsciousness
• Body temperature 41°C or higher before
unconsciousness
Untreated heatstroke is often fatal as it can cause
brain damage, shock, and heart or kidney failure.
Children, the elderly and the sick are at higher risk
because their temperature regulating system is
less flexible. People that are overweight are also
at greater risk because they lose heat less easily.
Treatment
• First aid must be immediate
• Cool the victim - aim to decrease the
body’s temperature by using a cool
bath, if available, and treat arm or leg
cramps by massage.
Mossel Bay & surrounding areas
Mossel Bay and surrounding areas offer numerous lovely beaches. Here
are some of the more popular spots, offering more than just bathing
starts. Likewise is the larger toys which
Should your child set out, riding on any
sort of craft (even a blown up crocodile),
ensure they are wearing a lifejacket. Life
jackets are the seat belts of the sea and
buy you time in an emergency.
Parents should ensure they know how
to do CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
in order to be effective in keeping
their child alive while they wait for
an ambulance. In an emergency, call
the NSRI on 082 990 5954 or 044-
mossel bay
Could you breathe life into your child?
If you were faced with a lifeless body, do you know what to do - or
not to do - until the ambulance arrived? Most parents do not know
how to administer basic CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation or
mouth to mouth). Yet, as your read this, within a radius of 30km
from your home there is probably a CPR class being held. Make it
a priority this summer to learn CPR and to ensure that those who
care for your children also know what to do in an emergency. Basic
rescue breaths and chest compressions could save your child's
life. If a child is unconscious and not breathing, you can help.
The correct procedure is to:
1. Move yourself and the child quickly away from any hazards -
out of the water or away from the surf in a near drowning
incident
2. Check whether the child is conscious by shouting their name
close to the ear
3. Attract bystanders to assist you by shouting for help
4. Start the resuscitation immediately if you are alone and if there
are other people around you, send someone to call for an
ambulance. Ask them to mention that the child is unconscious
and give a contact number and the exact address/location of
the incident
5. Lie the child on the ground
At your
6. Open the airway by tilting the head back into the sniffing
position
7. Check if the child is breathing by looking for chest- and/or
abdominal movement, listening at the mouth and nose and
feeling for breath on your cheek, while counting slowly to 10
8. If there is no breathing or you are in doubt, place your lips
over of the child’s lips and, with an open mouth (both) gently
breathe out into the child’s mouth while blocking the child’s
nose, until the child's chest rises. Do that twice and then
9. Position yourself at the side of the child with your shoulders
immediately above the chest. Place the palm of your hand (or
both hands if you need to) in the centre of the child's chest
between the nipples, straighten your elbow and press the
chest downwards 30 times in quick succession to a count of
1, 2, 3...
10. Repeat the cycle again and again until the ambulance
arrives.
Doing the ABC’s of resuscitation as mentioned above is not only
for water related emergencies. The principles can be applied to
anyone who is unconscious.
CPR is not just for water related emergencies. It is a lifeskill that
can turn any person into a life saving hero.
DON'T
When visiting the Point, especially the Cape St
Blaize cave, a big population of Dassies (Rock
Hyrax) may be seen. Many people unfortunately
have the habit of feeding these Dassies.
Sadly, the Dassie population is in a poor condition;
on closer inspection you will note that they suffer
from mange (brandsiekte), amongst other
diseases, which is mainly the result of a poor diet.
Dassies have a natural diet of mainly fynbos
consisting of foliage, and also insects, such as
lizards and birds' eggs from time to time. If they
should eat other foods that are artificially
introduced, they will not get the correct nutritional
balance they need. There is a municipal bylaw that
disallows people from dumping anything in public
prepared!
With the heavy rains this season, bees have been very
active. But what to do when you encounter them at
your holiday home this festive season? Here are some
handy tips.
Leave any bee hive alone if not trained at handling
bee hive removal
Have someone monitor the bee hive and its
location
Inform people around you about the bee hive and
its location. Warn them also not to disturb the hive
or bees.
the Dassies!
spaces, and this includes food scraps. Artificial
feeding refers to any food brought into an ecosystem
that is not part of an animal's natural diet.
Cape Nature is totally against artificial feeding and
SANPARKS states that "to feed an animal is to kill
an animal".
Artificial feeding causes animals to start associating
humans as an easily available source of food
and there is the risk that they will lose their fear of
humans. They can even become aggressive and
bite onlookers as they become too accustomed to
being fed as opposed to foraging naturally for food.
It is not a good idea to feed wild animals - despite
your best intentions - this could likely do far more
harm than good.
Here are the top three snakes species most commonly
found in Mossel Bay:
• Puff Adder (Bitis arietans) - is a large, extremely
venomous snake. It gives warning by inflating its body
and hissing loudly. This large, thick-bodied snake is
sluggish and is reluctant to move out of the way. The
puff adder has a broad head. The puff adder’s colour
range from straw yellow to light brown or orangebrown.
• Cape Cobra (Naja nivea) - with a long, slender body
and a colouration from normally bright, uniform yellow
or yellow with brown specks all over the body. These
snakes average about 1.2m, but may grow to be well
over 2m. The cape cobra produces a powerful neurotoxin
that affects the respiratory system.
• Boomslang (Dispholidus typus) - meaning 'Tree
Snake'. The boomslang is largely tree living. It is a
large, slender bodied snake with a distinct head and
for your convenience
Dassies may seem cute, but please refrain from feeding them as
they may become aggressive as a result.
Snake spotting
It is summer, the time when snakes come out of hibernation. When walking outside, especially
on hiking trails but also in suburban areas, be vigilant and always wear shoes. If you do
happen to come across a snake, rather let it go undeterred.
very large eyes with round pupils. Colouration is
variable, they may be leaf-green, bright green or black
with dark grey, black-edged belly scales or brick-red to
rust-red with an orange-pink belly.
What if a snake strikes?
• Apply firm pressure to the site of the bite using your
hand. Then, wrap the limb firmly with a bandage (tear up
some clothing if a bandage is not available), starting at
the site of the bite and working towards the heart.
• Immobilise the victim and splint the limb.
• Lay the victim down and keep him/her calm and
reassured.
• Transport the victim to the closest hospital. If there is no
hospital nearby, transport the victim to the closest doctor.
• Only a qualified doctor can inject antivenom.
• Do not give the victim alcohol or any other liquid.
• Keep the victim’s mouth and throat clear of saliva and
resort to artificial respiration if necessary.
• Suction may help if done immediately, even if only to
reassure the victim. All fluid removed by suction must be
spat out immediately. If possible, suck over a sheet of
rubber or plastic.
• Try and identify the snake and do not try to kill the snake
responsible, as a second bite would really complicate
matters.
A bee sting on a person who is allergic is classified as
a medical emergency. Here are some tips on what to
do in such an emergency.
Remove the sting with a sharp object like a piece of
paper to prevent the poison from being injected.
Try to remain calm.
Contact Netcare 911 or the closest hospital for
advice on how to treat the allergic person.
Do not take alcohol or other stimulants - only water.
Note the time of being stung.
Remove constrictive items such as rings, watches
and shoes.
Do not squeeze or cut the sting.
Carry the victim to the vehicle. It is probably better
to drive directly to hospital rather than wait for an
ambulance.
Anti histaminic will be administered intravenously
(depending on severity of the allergic condition).
The puff adder may be slow, but it is extremely venomous.
Colouration is varied in the boomslang.
Happy holidays
The SPCA is requesting that consideration
be given to all animals during the festive
season and that the public remains
vigilant to advise them of any situations of animals that may
need help. Please do not be afraid to report cases of cruelty,
neglect, abandonment or animals involved in accidents. Also,
do not overlook the welfare of farm animals, "working" animals
and wildlife.
The biggest problem during the festive season is the use of
fireworks. A pet which has not previously experienced Christmas
will be ill-prepared for the additional noise and excitement.
Please spare a thought for the animals as the activities
can be confusing, if not terrifying. Here are a few things to
remember when you consider animal safety this festive
season;
• Anyone with pets, or any other animals in their vicinity,
should avoid the use of fireworks and ensuring that their
companion animals (pets) are safely indoors in the event
of any fireworks being used in the area. Remember, it is
illegal to set off fireworks outside designated areas.
• Always walk your dogs on leash
• Even pets used to family activities will need special
consideration during this time when there will be extra
visitors and greater activity. Fear-biting is a reality, biting
could be a reaction to fear or stress.
• Keeping pets in a secure room during festivities may be a
solution. Put them in a separate part of the yard at times
when there is general mayhem that may harm them.
• Make sure that festive treats for humans are kept well out
Consider all animals during the festive season, especially with
regards to the use of fireworks.
Be safe on the roads this festive season.
animals
festive season is the use of fireworks.
of reach of animals. Chocolate, for example, contains an
ingredient that is poisonous to dogs. Also ensure your pets
have no access to onions or garlic.
• Wrappers and wrappings can lodge in animals' throats and
cause them to choke. Please be vigilant with candles,
balloons or any other decorations or party props.
• Unlike human beings, dogs don't have sweat glands and
have to pant to cool down. Do not ever leave your dog in a
car, especially not during hot days. When it is 28º outside,
the temperature inside a car shoots up to 45º in just 8
