SECTION 17.1<br />

WHAT IS EQUALITY?<br />

• Britain,your workplace and your communities are made up of people with different characteristics.<br />

In Britain there are women,black and ethnic minority people,people with disability,people of<br />

different faiths,lesbian,gay,bisexual and transgender; young and older people; and people from<br />

different social classes.Because of these differences,people’s experience in work and society also<br />

vary.These differences can affect your life chances and opportunities.<br />

• <strong>GMB</strong> is about fairness and achieving equality.<br />

• Equalities can appear complicated.Section 17.2 contains our“Jargon Buster”.A list of terms and<br />

names your employer might use when discussing equalities,with explanations of what they mean in<br />

plain English for you to refer to.Section 17.3 is a list of the current laws on equalities and the rights<br />

they give people at work.<br />

WHY IS EQUALITY IMPORTANT?<br />

• These differences can lead to direct or<br />

unwitting discrimination and lead to<br />

weakened trade union organisation.<br />

• It’s also about appreciating those differences<br />

and making sure that everybody feels<br />

included.<br />

• To“appreciate”is not just to tolerate or<br />

“put up”with differences,but to value all<br />

perspectives,experiences and talents.<br />

• Equality is integral to the job of <strong>GMB</strong> Reps.<br />

• <strong>GMB</strong> draws strength from not only it’s<br />

members but also from the increasing<br />

differences of it’s members.<br />

WHAT IS INCLUSION?<br />

• Inclusion is ensuring that everybody can fully participate.<br />

• An inclusive work place strengthens <strong>GMB</strong>’s position in the workplace.<br />

EQUALITY AND INCLUSION IS NOT<br />

• Political correctness.<br />

• About bringing on more people of a certain type.<br />

• A conspiracy by women and ethnic minorities to get ahead of white men.<br />

WHAT IS DISCRIMINATION?<br />

This is less favourable treatment on grounds of sex,race,disability,sexual orientation,religion and belief,<br />

age and in Northern Ireland,religious or political opinion.<br />

DISCRIMINATION LEGISLATION<br />

There is considerable UK and European legislation which outlaws discrimination.(See appendix 17.3)<br />

Discrimination because of a‘difference’can lead to unequal treatment and exclusion of <strong>GMB</strong> members or<br />

potential members.Discrimination can happen through the way members are treated,instructed or<br />

excluded as well as through:<br />

• Recruitment process<br />

• Selection process<br />

• Training<br />

• Promotion<br />

• Redundancy<br />

• Disciplinary process<br />

• Complaints process<br />

• Access to benefits<br />

• Income levels<br />

• Work life balance/flexible working policies
