places between, then up to Greenland and back to Australia. In the 2nd
want to be the first team to the “pit stops,” where you may win a prize.
Be sure to keep your eyes and ears open for the clues that will lead you
College Readiness Academy
for rising high school juniors and seniors
June 3 - June 16, 2012
College Readiness Academy is a two-week summer camp
that will introduce you to life at college!
Want to know what it’s like to live and learn on a college campus? Then join us at Georgia College and get the inside scoop on college
life away from home before you take the plunge!
For the first two weeks in June you will be going to class, finding out what resident life is like, eating in our dining rooms, meeting our faculty
and students, and learning to manage your newfound independence! Learn about admissions policies, get help with financial aid questions, and join
in on one-on-one workshops where you will meet friendly members of our campus community who will help you navigate college academics and
campus life.
In case you’re wondering, it’s not all work and no play at Georgia College!
Between classes, workshops and out-of-class projects, you will have a host of activities and events planned to keep you busy! Activities include:
relaxing by the pool, self-defense classes, yoga and rope climbing, movie nights and trips off campus. You will be amazed at the activities and
events you’ll have access to in college. Between doing your own laundry, working on your class projects, taking in the scene in downtown historic
Milledgeville, which is walking distance from your on-campus housing, and making new friends and mentors, your days here will be full!
Why College Readiness Academy?
We want you to succeed in college!
It’s not just being away from home that’s challenging.
• Your classes will be different and more difficult than in high school.
• You will be in a new environment.
• You will have new and different daily responsibilities.
• You will need to learn to balance school, life, finances, social events
and other priorities as you take this first step into adulthood.
GC’s College Readiness Academy will give you the tools to do these
things and more, whether you decide to come to Georgia College or
not!
You will learn about all the standard services that colleges and
universities provide for student success and learn how to use them to
succeed in your first year away from home! College campuses are set
up for you to succeed, and we want you to take your first step with
confidence!
Costs
Residential: $1,550
(Includes a full meal plan)
Commuter (Day camp): $995
(Meal plan can be purchased separately)
The Academics
You will be enrolled in two non-credit college classes, and for two
weeks you will be engaged in college level academics with out-ofclass
assignments, in-class projects and presentations. You will also
work within the community and on-campus creating, researching and
completing your projects.
Explore the American food system on a national and local scale with
our faculty chemist and sociologist duo, Dr. Metzker and Dr. Godwin.
Making new friends and interacting socially and ademically can be
daunting, but our public speaking class taught by Dr. Vail will help
you transition into a new environment and give you the confidence to
interact with your peers and mentors.
GC was recently rated the safest university in Georgia and
one of the safest campuses in the nation!
Our program is conducted in a safe and controlled environment so
that students feel comfortable and parents know their children are in
safe hands. We have 24-hour live-in chaperones who are accessible to
the students day or night. Our chaperones are current GC employees
different platforms in today’s media. From
the internet to the newspaper, the television
in society. Throughout the week, you’ll
Extreme Science
July 8-13
Freshwater Investigations
ALPHA Extreme Science is looking for all
future biologists, chemists and any other
students interested in science to aid in
freshwater investigations and learn how and
why organizations such as the Environmental
Protection Agency participate in freshwater
analyses! Almost ¾ of the world’s surface is
covered with water, but most of this is found in
oceans. Since the water in our oceans accounts
for more than 95% of the water, it only leaves a
small percentage of freshwater for our survival.
Join us for a week of exciting and challenging
experiments inside the Georgia College labs and
classrooms and in a variety of fresh water habitats
as we seek out the few sources of fresh water we
have access to and conduct hands-on experiments
to determine what factors affect our fresh water
supply. You will explore water treatment facilities,
journey to local lakes and rivers to collect samples
for our analyses and partake in an adventure
at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta! You will
learn factors that contribute to healthy aquatic
ecosystems by conducting investigations using
scientific tools such as microscopes, water quality
test kits and much more! You will also learn how
water quality can be affected by pH, temperature,
oxygen content, turbidity, algae, plankton and
human activities. This program is a must for any
aspiring scientist, so make sure and apply today!
Extreme Performing Arts
July 15-20
Acting:
Taking Risks and Making Choices
ALPHA Extreme Performing Arts is
calling all young actors near and far for
this concentrated week of rigorous acting
work led by collegiate and professional
experts that will leave any actor better
prepared and more focused for getting
the part. So often acting training becomes
lost in theatrical games and philosophies
leading to little action; this camp will
teach the importance of deep textual
analysis to reveal character needs through
risks and choices that yield unforgettable
dedicated performances. Coupled with
intense awareness training, you will take
considerable steps in self-awareness that
will lead to performances that project an
informed inner monologue. Regardless if
educational or professional, auditioning
for college or community theatre, this
intense week will change the way you
approach the script.
Please note that all students who are
accepted will need to have two 60 to
90 second (memorized and prepared)
monologues and a focused, open minded,
serious willingness to learn.
There’s no fancy footwork in square dancing; it’s more
It’s good for you, too! The aerobic exercise involved in
an evening of square dancing is similar in intensity to a
3-5 mile walk, but it’s a lot more fun. So put on your soft
soled shoes (no cowboy boots yet), and come on down
and dance like nobody’s watching! You don’t even need
to bring a partner but you can. A signed waiver of liability
You’re on the Air! (How to Really Make
it in Voiceovers)
Voiceovers are hot today! Audio books, documentaries, public
announcements, e-learning and commercials - the possibilities
are unending. You don’t have to be an actor to get voiceover
work! With such notable talent as James Earl Jones, Linda Hunt
and Donald Sutherland lending their voices to commercials, films
and videos, one would think that it would be next to impossible
to break into this field. Not so! In this class, you’ll learn about
an exciting new way to get around the competition and actually
turn voice-overs into a thriving full or part-time business!
Angela Castonguay’s most recent voiceover work includes
television commercials for middle Georgia businesses, voice
mail recordings for corporations and the continuing development
of her personalized voiceover greeting card business. She will
demonstrate voice-over techniques and will introduce you to the
voice-over business as a whole. She will talk about the numerous
opportunities, the income potential and the all-important demo
and how to have it produced. You’ll step up to the microphone to
do some practice recording and best of all, hear the results!
Defensive Driving
Save a life! Drive defensively! More than 43,000 people lose their lives in motor vehicle crashes each
year, and over two million more suffered disabling injuries, according to the National Safety Council.
For teenagers, cars are still the leading cause of death. “Death by driving” is the third highest preventable
cause of death. The triple threat of high speeds, impaired or careless driving and not using occupant
restraints threatens every driver, regardless of how careful or how skilled. Driving defensively means not
only taking responsibility for yourself and your actions, but also keeping an eye on “the other guy.”
GC is proud to be your partner in striving to prevent automobile accidents. In addition, you can save
money on your auto insurance (or, parents can save money on your teenager’s insurance!) by successfully
completing this National Safety Council Defensive Driving course. Georgia Senate Bill 433 requires
insurance companies in Georgia to give families with good driving experience a 10% discount on portions
of their auto insurance upon completion of this course. Eligibility for the discount will continue for three
years, provided that no driver commits a moving traffic offense or has a claim against the policy based
on an at-fault accident. Consult with your insurance agent to determine exactly how completion of this
program will affect your insurance rates.
Please bring paper and pencils to class. This course is not for points reduction.
