Would you like to be part of a team that knows how
to have fun? If so, the Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team
welcomes beginners through seniors in high school.
Join the Team!
If the summer-like weather over the weekend is
any indication of the summer to come, people will be
headed to the pool to get in some swimming. Glasgow
Kiwanis Swim Team wants to help you get wet!
The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team belongs to
the Montana Federation of Swimmers, an open pool,
competitive, summer swimming program. All in all,
the Federation is composed of about 25 teams in both
divisions.
Summer competition begins the first weekend in
June each year with teams competing with rival teams
from the same division until the State Meet. This
year, the State Meet will be held on the first weekend
in August in Conrad where the best swimmers from
the East and the West will compete for individual and
team championship titles. There are swim meets every
weekend throughout June and July.
There is a popular misconception that Swim Team
eats up the summer. In reality, the season is two months
long, and swimmers only have to compete at two swim
meets and place at Divisionals to go to State. And, there
are plenty of local meets to get two meets in. Glasgow
will be hosting its meet June 19th and 20th.
Registration is from 500 - 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May
18th at the Glasgow Civic Center. Swim Team season
runs from June 1st -August 1st.
Coach Bradlev Hoine encouraaes a swimmer at last
year's State skim Meet in ~ ouniu~.
Bradley Hoine returns as Head Coach this year.
"This season, I come to the table bringing fresh new
ideas and training techniques. I'm REALLY excited to
get things rolling again! I've got some great ideas and
new sets I want to give a go," says Hoine.
Swim Team is open to all ages of swimmers
through high school. Signups for Glasgow Kiwanis
Swim Team will be Tuesday May 18 at the Civic Center
from 5:OOPM to 6:30PM. For more information or a
registration form, visit glasgowkiwanisswim.com or
contact Shantel Zeiger at 228-2387, or Gary Wageman
at 228-4893.

The Wizard...
THE WIZARD OF ID is a
comic strip that started in 1964
and appears in about 1000
newspapers. The strip of Id deals
with a run-down kingdom that
takes place a thousand years ago.
Id is always at war with the Huns
and the ruthless king is always on the search for more money
and power. The king is short, about three feet tall, and hates
being called a fink.
The Wizard is smart and good natured but usually his
spells backfire on him. Sir Rodney is a coward who leads his
hopeless army. He has a huge nose which is the source of
many jokes. He wants the king's approval but usually fails.
Another character, the Spook, has been in prison many
years and is covered with hair from his head to his feet. His
food is swill which is a disgusting slop. Bing, an alcoholic jester,
has solved the problem of hangovers by never being sober.
There are numerous characters in the strip and many plots
are develo~ed around them.
Lawrence prevails
over 25 other drivers
An impressive total of 26 cars turned out for the
Milk River MotorSports Spring Demolition Derby held
this past Saturday afternoon at the Northeast Montana
Fairgrounds in Glasgow.
"It's the first time we've had this many cars in at
least twenty years," Randy Isakson, organizer of the
event, said. From experienced drivers to up-and-coming
motorheads, "The interest is definitely there," added
the White Indian. Cars came from as far as Bozeman,
Arlee, Williston, Miles City, and crafty 01' Mike Bunk
returned from Baker to give it another go.
Winning it all was local driver Bryce Lawrence
who pocketed $2,727 for his efforts. And that made
Nate Sillerud a little richer as well, as he bought Bryce
in the calcutta.
Josh Bunk took the 2nd-place check for $1,300. He
also won the Mad Dog trophy (Most Aggressive Driver)
which was how he advanced to the championship heat.
3rd place and $900 went to Melanie Hawkins, 4th place
and $650 to Fred Potter, and 5th place and $450 to
Michael Pedersen.
Heat winners for $100 each were, 1st heat: Roddy
Zinda (Glendive) and Page Carney (Arlee); 2nd heat:
Willie Lauckner and Wyatt Pederson; 3rd heat: Michael
Pedersen and Bryce Lawrence; 4th heat: Fred Potter and
Bill Tackitt (Arlee).
Consolation drivers advancing to the main were
Melanie Hawkins, Justin Kidd Quinlan (Miles City) and
RJ Johnson. Winning the "Hard Luck" trophy was Josh
Turner, who is stationed in Japan and here on leave,
who busted the whole front end out of his car shortly
into the derby.
"It was a real good derby," the White Indian said,
"they wrecked some cars and there were no arguments
among the drivers."
In fact, at the meeting, the drivers opted to donate the
additional $500 purse money to the Brunell Family.
"I sure appreciate all the help and all the businesses
that make this happen for this little community," says
the White Indian. "We ain't had 26 cars in ... how long?
It takes a lot of hard work from everyone involved,
including the drivers. They all deserve a big 'thank you',
and I'm very sincere about that. I just wish more people
could have made it to the show to support their efforts.
If you weren't there, you missed one great derby."
The next Milk River MotorSports event will be the
annual Mud Bog, slated for Saturday and Sunday, June
12th and 13th.
